I made my usual comment. “Todd I could walk faster than those women run.” Todd laughed as he knew I wasn't a runner. “Listen, Mom. I want you to show by your actions. How about you running with me next year at this race?” Without thinking, I quickly agreed to this challenge. But when it was almost time for this race to occur, Todd wasn't going to be running. He was sent to Africa as a soldier for three years. A few of his friends knew this challenge I had agreed to with Todd. They started to encourage me to run the race. I hadn't trained or anything. Quite frankly, I had almost forgotten I said I would do it. I decided I should keep my promise to Todd and run the race. The first thing I did was go out and buy some running clothes. I might as well look good was my thought. even though I hadn't trained at all. The day of the race came. I was not well prepared, but I started. It wasn't long before some guy on the roadside started to talking next to me. I wasn't in the talking mood. However, this guy was very talkative. He kept making remark on how tired he was, and I must be tired too. The race was over, and this guy's wife won! I was just happy to finish and keep my promise to Todd. I came home, and my neighbor asked about the race. I told him what had happened and how this guy would not shut up his negative talk. If he thought I was the competition, I was going to be the competition. In the next few months, I trained hard, whether rainy or sunny. Sometimes I was burned out, but I was determined that nothing would weigh me down. I even bought some tapes talking about how to run a race and listened to them daily. Both my speed and confidence grew with each passing day. As the race got near, I felt well prepared. The race began on a cold day and I saw this guy and his wife. “This time I'll have to win!” I said to myself. Freezing cold as it was, I ran with only a sleeveless shirt and shorts on. I stayed close behind this guy's wife almost the whole race. And then this guy came near us! I'll never forget his words to his wife, “Watch out! She's right behind you.” Well, I wouldn't let it happen anymore! With every bit of strength I ran right past her and won the race! I fell on the grass, and wept happy tears. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses! Turning our weaknesses into strengths makes us unbeatable. This is an inspiring story of a 12-year-old boy Kim who defeated his weakness, by unknowingly making it his strength. Poor Kim lost his left hand in a terrible accident. His parents could not comfort him. To cheer him up, his father made him join a Judo(柔道) school. As the boy always wanted to learn Judo, his father thought that this would make him happy. Everyone wondered how a single armed boy could learn Judo. However, the master happily accepted him. He trained in Judo for about 8 months. He practiced nothing but a single stroke(擊) . He trained for all 8 months in mastering a single stroke. The boy was surprised and sometimes annoyed as his master taught him only one stroke. Yet, he said nothing. The boy mastered the stroke and grew as nobody could excel(勝過) in doing that particular stroke. The boy was picked by the master to compete in the national level Judo championship tournament(比賽). Everyone made fun of Kim and the master. How a one-handed boy could win a national championship? Even the boy was not sure about why his master chose him. Surprisingly, Kim easily defeated his six contenders(競(jìng)爭(zhēng)者) with his single stroke. He gradually moved to semi-finals. He struggled a bit in the semi-finals and won again. Needless to say, it surprised everyone and the final match began. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Kim asked his master how he won the championship with just a single stroke. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【范文背誦】 Needless to say, it surprised everyone and the final match began. Kim won the match and became the champion! Kim asked his master how he won the championship with just a single stroke. His master told him, ‘My dear boy, you learned the most difficult stroke in Judo that very few can master to perfection. If your opponent wants to beat you and prevent you from using the stroke, he should hold your left hand. This is the secret behind your victory!’ Kim understood that he had succeeded in turning his weakness into strength and the loss of his left hand helped him win the championship. Tom and his friend were walking to work. Confident that no one knew his little trick, Tom greeted Mr. Bates as usual. “How is your mother?” Mr. Bates asked. There was something weird in his voice, but Tom strived to keep calm. “Oh, she is a little better. Thank you.” Tom said, trying to hide his anxiety. “Go home.” Mr. Bates said, “Don’t come to this office again.” Hearing the words, Tom was confused, unable to figure out why. Without saying anything, Mr. Bates pointed to the wall behind him. Turning around, Tom saw a new television on the wall. “You had a very good ticket, didn’t you? You were right in front of all the people, weren’t you?” asked Mr. Bates, coldly. His words sent a chill down Tom’s spine. It suddenly dawned on him that Mr. Bates had brought this television in yesterday afternoon so that everyone could see the big match in the office. Thanks to the very good ticket, everyone could see him on TV. Feeling regretful and ashamed, Tom finally understood the old saying: Honesty is always the best policy. 痹俳Y(jié)合文中的句子“I shall see it on TV.(我會(huì)在電視上看比賽。)”和“But Tom’s ticket was a good one. Sally had been playing football all summer. She really enjoyed running around with the other players in her bright orange uniform, chasing the black and white ball across the grassy field. As much as shewed, though, Sally still had not scored one single goal. Before each game, they had a practice session. The coach showed Sally and her team how to pass the ball to each other and take shots at the goal. Sally was pretty good at passing the ball, but even during practices, she couldn't kick the ball past the goalkeeper. She wondered if she should quit football and join a different club. “Don’t give up,” said the coach. But it was half-time, and Sally was feeling frustrated (沮喪). She was trying! Every time she got a chance to kick the ball, it would go in the wrong direction or a player from the other team would take control of it. She sipped at her cola and pouted (撅嘴). The break was over and the referee blew his whistle to start the game again. The two teams walked back onto the field, both determined to win. Sally bent, tied up her shoelace and heard her mother whisper in her ear. “Stay focused. Keep your eyes on the ball. Look for an opportunity to get the ball. You can do it.” Sally stood up and took a deep breath. Even if she didn't get one goal all summer, she knew that she had tried her best. That was something to be proud of. So she smiled at her mother and headed to her position. The whistle blew, and the game continued. The score was tied with one goal each. The green team was pretty good, but Sally's orange team was fast. The girls' ponytails bounced as they ran, with many feet kicking frantically (拼命地) at the ball when it came near them. It was a rather boring game and Sally's heart was no longer in it. Sally started daydreaming about joining other school clubs. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Recalling her mother's words. She could be a member of the hip hop club, which her best friend Tracy kept talking about. She imagined herself dancing on stage of a big auditorium with thousands of people cheering for her. She could also try a different sport, like jogging or cycling. Anyway, football would be her last choice. Just as her mind was wandering, she saw a familiar face in the crowd. It was her mother. “Stay focused. You can do it.” Recalling her mother’s words, Sally was woken from her daydream. At that very moment, her teammate passed the ball to her. She took control of it and dribbled it between her feet, moving forward toward the net of the green team. She passed a few players and was soon positioned right in front of the net. Focused on the ball, she kicked it as hard as she could. The referee blew her whistle. “Goal!”. Sally’s team won. Her mom was right. All she had to do was stay focused. I used to hate running. It seemed too hard, and pushing outside my comfort zone was not something I was raised to do. In fact, I wouldn't have become a runner if it weren't for my husband Charles. He had been a serious competitive runner for many years. But several years ago, he quitted running for some reason. After our marriage, he wouldn't stop talking about how much he missed it. "So start running again, why don't you?" I was getting tired of hearing about it. So he picked it up again, and after a year or so, I started to join him at the track. Just a few weeks later, Charles signed us both up for a five-kilometer race in my city. I hesitated about doing it. After all, it was too soon. But on the race day, there I was. As soon as the gun went off, thousands of runners pushed forward. The first kilometer was too tough for me. "I don't think I'm going to make it." I was already breathing heavily and painfully aware of the group of runners pounding past me. "No, you're doing great", said Charles. He was trying to encourage me, to get me focused on something other than my discomfort. "I can't," I said, in a weak voice. He tried a different way to persuade me. "Just make it to that house and let's see how you feel." I had to continue, sweating all over. After another minute I saw the three-kilometer mark. All I could think of was that I was dying and that my husband was torturing (折磨)me. Miserable doesn't even begin to describe how I felt. And there was pain, so much pain that I was on the verge of breakdown. "You'll be fine. You've got less than a kilometer to go," Charles shouted loudly. I rounded a corner. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I had my arms held higher when I passed through the finish line. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【范文背誦】 I rounded a corner. So, I straightened up, and gathered up all my strength to dash for the finish line. I had my arms held higher when I passed through the finish line. I succeeded. But I was too tired to say any word, only panting for breath. A volunteer put a medal around my neck. Charles raced to me and cried in excitement, “You did great! I'm so proud of you!” He patted my shoulder and helped me up. “That was amazing! I want to do another race. This running stuff is amazing!” I shouted, resting my head on my husband's shoulder. My lungs and my comfort zone both expanded. I was always a big fan of football, and watching a game at the stadium was obviously one of the best ways to be free from work and relax. Therefore,as soon as I heard the news that there would be a game of our home team against the team from Mississippi, I booked a front-row seat, excited about having a fantastic weekend I was excited when I sat in the stadium. When the game began, however, I discovered that I was sitting directly in front of a Super-lungs. He seemed like a nice guy. But his idea of having fun at a football game was obviously nothing like mine,or most well-behaved football fans’. He yelled (大喊) non-stop as loud as he could. He yelled at the coaches, the players, the officials and the Mississippi State fans. Always at the top of his lungs. The Super-lungs made an surprising performance and kept it for us for the entire 90 minutes and never showed any sign of tiredness. He was caught up in his own world so he failed to notice he was ruining (破壞) hundreds of others’ experience of watching the game. I felt that my ear drums (耳鼓) almost got broken. His mouth was only two feet away from my ears. For a while I thought of shouting back and stopping him yelling. People around were turning to look at him, and I could read their thoughts: “Is he never going to stop?” And he seemed not to see those looks. At halftime I escaped by walking for a few minutes outside the stadium. I was thinking of finding an empty seat in another part of the stadium. However, to my disappointment, the seats were all taken. I had no choice but to go back to the Super-lungs. When returning to my seat, I missed my steps and fell heavily on the stairs. As I was struggling (掙扎) to stand up, a pair of huge hands helped me from behind. I looked back and saw the Super-lungs' smiling face and concerned eyes. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Super-lungs kept shouting for another 90 minutes. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【范文背誦】 I looked back and saw the Super-lungs' smiling face and concerned eyes. “Are you all right?” he asked me, with genuine care in his voice. “Oh, thank you,I'm OK.” I smiled to him. Suddenly I felt he was gentle and kind. All that yelling, was only his way of enjoying a football game. It might not please me, but I certainly did not fully reflect his personality! Honestly, looking at him now, I couldn't help marveling at how much passion he showed in a simple game. He surely was “enjoying life to the fullest”. The Super-lungs kept shouting for another 90 minutes. However,I felt it much easier to bear. The funny thing was that I found myself joining him in standing and shouting, too! It was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. I suppose it's important to tolerate and to love people around us. In that way we will able to see them as real persons, rather than funny or annoying creatures. The Comeback Laurie sat quietly in the empty dressing room at the ice-skating rink(溜冰場(chǎng)). She had not been skating in any competition since her left knee was badly injured in an accident six months ago. As she waited for her turn to skate, Laurie was very nervous. She knew that today was a very important day in her comeback. “If I can win today,” she thought, “I can skate in the World Cup next year and then maybe I can make it to the Olympics.” Laurie was told that she had a tough competition this year, and a girl from Connecticut named Jinny Jordan who was really strong in everything. “She is the one you have to beat this year,” the coach said. Minutes later, the door opened and Laurie saw a young woman who was about her own age. The young woman dumped some of her belongings onto a chair. The bag fell to the floor with a sound. Laurie felt uncomfortable as she looked at Jinny. “So this is my competitor,” thought Laurie, “Because of her, I may lose tonight.” “This costume(服裝) was my mom’s idea,” Jinny started the conversation, looking down at her red, white, and blue skating dress. “ looks like a flag.” Laurie couldn’t keep from smiling. She pointed to Jinny’s skating bag. “Something fell out of your bag,” Laurie said. Jinny looked at the clothing and equipment that lay scattered on the floor. As she began to gather her belongings, the door opened. “Jinny,” called someone, “You’d better give the tape of your music to the sound engineer right away.” “I thought I gave him my music tape an hour ago,” said Jinny, “Tell him it’s the green box with my initials written in white in the right-hand corner.” “He said you never gave it to him. and he’s getting angry.” “Then I don’t know what I did with it,” said Jinny, hurrying out. Laurie knew that music was nearly as important to the program as skating itself. If she lost her music tape, she might as well forget about skating. Laurie stood up and walked to the chair to do a few more knee bends. Paragraph 1: Suddenly she saw something small and dark green behind the leg of the dressing table. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Feeling relaxed, Laurie skated quickly to the center of the rink after the announcer finally called her name. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【范文背誦】 Suddenly she saw something small and dark green behind the leg of the dressing table. She pulled it out and saw the white Initials J.J, in the top right-hand comer. “It’s Jinny’s music tape!” She exclaimed. Laurie’s heart started beating fast. “All I’d have to do is forget that I found this,” she thought. “If Jinny doesn’t have her music, she might as well not skate. And then I would win.” Laurie shivered slightly as she thought about this. Then she wondered,“Does winning mean so much to me that I’d be willing to cheat for it?” She walked to the door and called Jinny loudly. Feeling relaxed, Laurie skated quickly to the center of the rink after the announcer finally called her name. The music filled the stadium and she skated gracefully and beautifully. Her left knee was fine and she felt herself gliding on the ice. The audience applauded from time to time, enthusiastically supporting her in her comeback. When she finished, her coach ran up to her and hugged her. “You did it, Laurie!” She said. Laurie smiled and thought about Jinny’s music tape. “No one will ever know how close I really came to losing.” She said softly to herself. My 11-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, started to talk about quitting swimming, which broke my heart because she loves swimming. So when the swim season began, I cut a deal with her. She would practice three times a week and try really hard. I wouldn't make her compete in the swim meets. Elizabeth does not like swim meets. She gets horribly nervous but not because she wants to win. She doesn't care if she wins. Recently, Elizabeth's team announced a special swim night: Members 11 and older would swim a timed 50 meters relay. It wasn't exactly a meet, because it would involve only team members. That was my view. Elizabeth argued that it absolutely was a meet because there would be races. I told Elizabeth I really wanted her to go. She fought back angrily but finally agreed. When the day of the special swim night arrived Elizabeth was nervous. She was the youngest person and shorter by at least a foot than most of the other kids. She panicked when it was time for the T-shirt relay. The relay works like this: One person from each relay team puts on a T-shirt, a pair of socks? and a swim cap; swims 50 meters; and gets out of the pool. She takes off the clothes and puts them on the next person, who then swims 50 meters. This continues until everyone on the team has completed a lap. Then it was Elizabeth's turn to swim. She seemed to swim faster in the T-shirt and socks than she did when she wasn't wearing them. Approaching the halfway mark, Elizabeth was in the lead. Suddenly, somebody noticed that one of Elizabeth's socks had fallen off and was floating (漂)in the pool. "She has to get that sock on before the end of the race," a swimming official told Elizabeth's team, “or you will be disqualified.” Everybody on her team started screaming “Elizabeth! After all, Shay was not a normal boy-stricken by a deadly disease, he was both mentally and physically disabled. He was a bit crippled(瘸) and tended to lose physical balance while running. Worse still, he was intelligently retarded - he was not as clever as kids of his age. For Shay, each day meant a fight for survival, but each day, he desired to join other kids in games, and like other kids, he dreamt of being a hero of a game. Shay's father understood that soccer was not for Shay, but if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence. He approached one of the boys on the field and asked if Shay could play, not expecting much. The boy paused and thought to himself, “We're losing by one goal and the game is in the second half. Shay's gonna decrease our chance to win." He hesitated for a while but said determinedly, “I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him on the field." Overjoyed and excited, Shay struggled over to the team's bench and put on a team shirt with a broad smile. Seeing all this, his father had a small tear in his eye and warmth in heart. Simply a position on the bench was good enough for Shay to enjoy his dream. The boys on both team saw the father's joy at his son being accepted. In the last ten minutes, Shay got the chance and stepped on the field. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The game continued, and at the last minute one of the boy passed the ball in the direction of Shay. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【范文背誦】 In the last ten minutes, Shay got the chance and stepped on the field. Even though the ball didn't come his way, Shay was obviously joyful to be on the field, and to be part of the team. He chased after the ball despite the fact that his unsteady steps could never catch up with the rapidly flying ball. Then Shay's team scored and the match was tied! The whole team hugged and celebrated, including Shay. Shay smiled and chanted excitedly with his teammates as if he himself had done the goal. The game continued, and at the last minute one of the boy passed the ball in the direction of Shay. The whole ground went wild with cheering."Shoot,Shay! Shoot,Shay!"Boys on both team stopped, yelling for Shay. Shay struck a pose of shooting, and gave the ball all his strength. Nice as the shot was, the speed was not.Seeing the ball rolling slowly towards the goal, the goalkeeper slowed down his movement and narrowly missed the ball. A winning goal! Shay was overwhelmed with joy, as was his father. Thanks to these kind boys, Shay realized his dream of being a hero of that game. "Pick up the pace!" said Amy's husband. "But I can't!" Amy said, her heart beating quickly inside. "I can't go any faster! Her husband encouraged her. "Yes, you can! You're making progress every day.” To help Amy stay healthy, her husband had been running with her for over two years. Several years ago, Amy could barely walk down the stairs of her apartment building due to fatness caused by eating disorders. She realized the problem after a failed job interview and began walking to improve her ability to move. At first, she could walk for only 15 minutes at a time. But she pushed herself every day, walking 5 minutes longer than she did the day before until she walked for an hour and eventually two. For three years, Amy kept her walking habit, slowly and painstakingly building her body shape. Then she changed her walking shoes to running shoes about two years ago and became an excellent runner. In March 2001, an advertisement invited people to nominate(提名)an ordinary person who inspired them to bring the Olympic flame to Salt Lake City as torch bearers(火炬手)or support runners.(Support runners serve as “guardians of the flame" and run with torch bearers along the journey.)Amy's experiences touched her husband, so he nominated her to be a torch bearer. The possibility to be selected was low, but Amy wanted to try. Running taught Amy the importance of training for a race. She pictured herself running a race and crossing the finish line. For months, she ran through her neighborhood carrying a broken-off broom handle, feeling the weight of the torch. She waved at her neighbors, pretending they were cheering crowds. She also printed a picture of a torch bearer wearing the white uniform, replaced the face with a picture of hers, and put it onto her refrigerator door. Every day, Amy imagined herself as a torch bearer. She was training for a historic running event. On September 26th, while on her daily run through her neighborhood, an express package arrived. Paragraph 1: Amy opened it and found a letter and a book on the Olympics. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: "One of today's torch bearers can't run her part, " announced the relay organizer. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【范文背誦】 Amy opened it and found a letter and a book on the Olympics. The letter read, "Congratulations! You've been selected as a support runner for the Olympic Torch Relay..." Although she wouldn't be wearing the white uniform, she wasn't disappointed. She completed the required physical examination, delivered the forms, and waited. Months later, another package arrived. It contained her official blue support runner uniform along with instructions for her part of the relay. Then on a cold day, Amy and her husband stood outside the Torch Relay collection point. "One of today's torch bearers can't run her part," announced the relay organizer. Then he said, "One lucky support runner will become a torch bearer. Select a person now." Luckily, Amy became the torch bearer. Holding it tight, she ran down the street filled with people waving flags. The Olympic theme song was broadcast. Amy smiled and waved to the crowds, knowing that she was carrying not only the torch, but also the Olympic spirit. Mike licked (舔) the last of the chocolate ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet. When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift. Mike climbed out the pool, smiling. He had just won first place. A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike decided to enjoy his favorite flavored ice cream before they left home. As Mike climbed out the pool, his teammates patted (拍) him on the back. He’d taken first place again in his race. As it turned out, Mike decided to have some chocolate ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets that came up. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of being placed in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn’t admit it, but he was also starting to feel a little uncomfortable. All that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer’s build. It didn't take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place---and then third and then last place in his races. The lucky chocolate ice cream had lost its magic. On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. “Mike, I think we need to talk about this. We all love ice cream, but it’s got lots of fat and sugar in it, and it’s not healthy for your body to eat so much of it.” Mike unwillingly agreed. His father offered to go running with him few days a week to help strengthen his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim. It was the last meet of the season, and Mike wasn’t sure what to expect. He felt healthy again, but he didn’t know if he still had any speed in the pool. Paragraph 1: As he dived into the water, he kicked his legs and stretched his arms as far as he could. Whenever he came up for a breath, he could see he was gaining on the boy ahead of him in the next lane. Feeling determined to pass him, Mike found the power in his muscles he needed to swim ahead, and as his hand touched the edge of the pool, the race was over. He lifted his swim glasses off his head and looked at the electronic board. He knew he wasn’t last, but what was his time? His jaw dropped as he realized he had beaten his own best time, and everyone else' s too. Mike had won his race, and he had also qualified for the national championships. The audience and his teammates cheered loudly, and his parents were laughing from ear to ear. “Hey son, let' s go and have some of your favorite ice cream and celebrate!” said his father. “Thanks, Dad, but I’ll pass on the ice cream; it’s not such a lucky charm after all!” I first played ping-pong in our basement (地下室) at home. My brother and I asked for an old wooden table from my grandfather. It was painted green. Although it was very simple, it served its purpose every day. My father never really played any other sports with me, but ping-pong was one that he played quite well and it took me plenty of time before I could beat him. My elder brother was also a very good competitor. When I got to university, I was happy to discover a ping-pong table in the common room. I spent a great deal of time there, often until the midnight. There were about three or four friends that I often played against. We were all at the same skill level. One of them had ever played in a tournament (錦標(biāo)賽). A friend from Germany said his father had ever won the German national tournament. We took part in a tournament. My ranking (名次) is the third place, but I had beaten the first and second place winners when we had played for fun. I sometimes played with other friends who didn’t play ping-pong well, so I would use my left hand to give them an advantage. But before long I became so skilled with my left hand that they no longer had the advantage. Later, I played in a ping-pong competition which was held by my university. I lost at first. But because it was double climination (雙淘汰制), I went to the loser group. I beat all the players and then played against the student who had beaten me in the first round. Surprisingly, I beat him 3 times and won the competition. Paragraph 1: Later, there was a tournament held in the city where I studied. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: After the tournament I didn’t often play the sport because of the busy study. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【范文背誦】 Later, there was a tournament held in the city where I studied. It was a tournament for university students. Players came from all the northern universities. I felt very proud because I took part in it for my university. I believed that I could play pretty well. I expected to get a good ranking in the tournament. I felt very nervous, because I played against a student who had won many times. I played very hard and tried my best. Although I lost the tournament, it was a good practice. After the tournament I didn’t often play the sport because of the busy study. But I played ping-pong with my friends when I was free. I thought it was a great deal of fun to play ping-pong with friends. It’s also a good way to make our friendship closer and keep us healthier. He was to appear as a violin performer with the New York Symphony Orchestra. On his way from the stage entrance to the artists’ room, he saw a large fire ax (斧子) on a wall. “What’s that for?” he asked a guard. “To cut the heads off the performers who don’t play well,” was the reply. “And how many heads have you already cut off?” “Oh, quite a few,” said the guard, with a friendly smile. Some in the audience that night, especially the music critics, expected the boy’s head to roll. He was to play a difficult violin piece by Beethoven. Critics felt that this great piece should be attempted only by a mature artist. For a child, the complicated fingering would be impossible, they added. It was November 25, 1927. That night Carnegie Hall was packed. All eyes in the audience watched for Yehudi Menuhin, the eleven-year-old violin performer, to appear on the stage. News of his talent had already excited the public imagination. There was an outburst of applause when he came out in his white silk shirt and black pants. In a businesslike manner, Yehudi took his place near the conductor and handed his violin to the first violinist to be tuned. There was a breathless silence in the hall. When the kettledrum (定音鼓) announced the opening of the music, Yehudi stood calmly, so absorbed in the music that some people feared he would not come in on time. But, with only seconds to spare, he adjusted his violin and raised his bow. At the great singing tone that filled the hall, there was a slight excitement, and then a silence. Listeners were impressed by his pure tone, expert fingering and wonderful skill. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Even the newspaper critics stayed on to applaud Yehudi. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【范文背誦】 Listeners were impressed by his purr tone, expert fingering and wonderful skill. A burst of applause almost stopped the concert. But Yehudi played on, bringing everyone’s attention back to Beethoven’s great music. At the end of the music, people shouted and yelled, many with tears in their eyes. The men in the orchestra rose and joined in the noise. At this point Yehudi looked like the young boy he was. Catching sight of his teacher Persinger, he dragged him onto the stage, pointing at him and clapping his own hands. Still the applause went on. Even the newspaper critics stayed on to applaud Yehudi. He had to appear on stage in his coat, cap in hand, before at last the audience let him go home. The next morning, music critic Olin Downes wrote in The New York Times: “I had come to the hall convinced that a child could not play the violin more effectively than a trained seal. I left knowing that there is such a thing as a great artist who begins at an early age.” Time, and Yehudi Menuhin, have proved the critic right. Early in the morning I went to the ocean beach to play my guitar. The usually crowded beach was deserted except for two people. On one side of the boardwalk (木板人行道) was a woman who was cleaning the beach with a broom; on the other side was a lone figure sitting and staring to sea. I chose a spot between them and began to play. As I played, the woman with the broom swept her way right next to me. She stopped sweeping and leaned on her broom, smiling at me. She appeared to be homeless with dirty mismatched clothes. “You sure play beautiful music.” she said. “I think my friend would like you music. I want to hire you to play for her.” She pointed to the lone figure staring out at the ocean, then produced a few coins from her pocket. “I don’t have much, and I know you’re worth a lot, but if I give this to you, will you play a song for her? She’s going through a lot. I know the music will make her feel better.” I told her I’d be happy to play for free. As we walked over to her friend, the Broom Lady told me that her friend had not talked for weeks. We approached, and the Broom Lady introduced me, “Annie, I got you a present to cheer you up. It’s a guitar man who is going to play a song specially for you.” Annie didn’t move. She was wearing dark sunglasses and had an old coat pulled up to cover most of her face. I sat next to Annie and played. As I played I put every thought into having good things happen for this woman. I played for quite a while. Suddenly, Annie turned toward me and said, “You make it so beautiful. I can feel it inside my heart.” Paragraph 1: She took off her sunglasses. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: When I stopped playing and looked up, I was shocked to see a small crowed around us. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【范文背誦】 She took off her sunglasses. I could tell a faint glow pierced the dark clouds of frustration in her eyes. I gestured to her to sit opposite to me and she slowly moved closer. I kept on playing the guitar, trying to reveal my sympathy, understanding and comfort through the soft melodies. It seemed that she couldn’t but recall the bitter and severe days she went through as tears streamed down her cheeks. She didn’t wipe them off but had them falling down, as if all her worries and sorrows went away as well. When I stopped playing and looked up, I was shocked to see a small crowed around us. They looked at me with enthusiasm, bursting into applause. Annie stood up and clapped her hands too. Several women, having kept an eye on her, approached and hugged her, whispering some cheerful words before they left. Refreshed and relieved, Annie threw her arms around my neck and uttered, “Thank you for your music.”, which assured the Broom Lady of her return to normal speech. I had put on numerous shows to different audiences, but this remained the most healing and rewarding one. 在給的第一段開頭中,“She took off her sunglasses(她摘下了太陽(yáng)鏡)” “took off her sunglasses為關(guān)鍵詞,后文需要描述作者在演奏時(shí)怎樣用音樂引起了她的共鳴和給與安慰。在給的第二段開頭中“When I stopped playing and looked up, I was shocked to see a small crowed around us.(當(dāng)我停止演奏,抬頭看時(shí),我驚訝地發(fā)現(xiàn)我們周圍有一小群人。)” I could tell a faint glow pierced the dark clouds of frustration in her eyes(我看得出一絲微弱的光芒穿透了她眼中沮喪的烏云),同時(shí),描述了作者對(duì)其在音樂方面給與的安慰:I kept on playing the guitar, trying to reveal my sympathy, understanding and comfort through the soft melodies.(我繼續(xù)彈著吉他,努力在柔和的旋律中表達(dá)我的同情、理解和安慰。) Refreshed and relieved, Annie threw her arms around my neck and uttered, “Thank you for your music.”(安妮神清氣爽,如釋重負(fù),她摟住我的脖子說:“謝謝你的音樂?!保?
