With egg shrtages already a familiar sight n supermarket shelves, farmers are warning that vegetables and grains culd be next, because envirnmental plans take ut large areas f land that are used fr fd prductin.
Stephen Hlt, wh wns 670 acres in Nrthamptnshire, said farmers were being stimulated by the gvernment subsidy t reduce fd prductin in favur f wildlife. He has signed up t an envirnmental plan which is being carried ut in England under the cncept f “public mney fr public gds”.
“Instead f 1,300 tnnes f prduct, we will prduce 900 tnnes f prduct frm ur farm,” Hlt said. Under the new plan, his input csts will be reduced and he will be paid a guaranteed sum.
“In my view, the huge danger is that there will be a serius decrease in agriculturalutput,” he said. “We are nt helping but we can’t have the whle fd system f the UK n ur shulders, because everyne has t act in their individual best interests.”
James Williams, wh farms in Oxfrdshire, said the envirnmental plans will reduce the risks in his farm business and that he will nt be affected by the weather and internatinal markets. “It des mean that we will be taking perhaps 30 per cent f ur wheat land ut f prductin fr a seasn r tw, r mre,” he said. “What has nt been mentined is that if sme disaster fell and ur imprts were disrupted（擾亂）, grwing wheat t prduce bread culd nt be turned n like a tap.
