With all the dietary infrmatin nline, it can be hard t knw what tips t fllw. Watch ut fr these wrds and expressins.
Fat Is Gd
It desn’t matter if yu are part f the fat is GOOD fr yu r BAD fr yu grup, the imprtant questin t ask is the surce f the fat. If it cmes frm a land-based animal, and is likely t be slid at rm temperature, then it is saturated (飽和的) fat whereas if it cmes frm fish r plants, and it is likely t be liquid at rm temperature, then it is unsaturated fat. All the evidence indicates that eating mre unsaturated fat than saturated fat lwers yur risk f dying early.
Natural Sugar Is Better
The vast majrity f sugar we cnsume is sucrse (蔗糖). It is the white pwdered stuff we ck with and is made up f glucse and fructse. Hw abut sugar frm hney? It is ften marketed as natural and better fr yu. Actually, it just has its wn distinct flavur, but is as sweet because f glucse and fructse.
High-pH Water
Sme peple think we need t eat alkali (堿) fd t maintain ur bld at a pH f 7.4. But everything we eat r drink passes thrugh the stmach, which, at a pH f 1.5, is the mst acidic part f the bdy. It is then neutralised t a pH f 7. S, nthing we eat will change the pH f ur bld.
Dn’t Eat Anything That Yu Can’t Prnunce
Whether fds are natural r highly prcessed, they are all full f chemicals. Are yu suppsed t fear “phenylthicarbamide”, because yu can’t prnunce it? This is simply the chemical respnsible fr the bitter taste fund in brassicas, the plants in the cabbage and mustard family.
Dn’t Eat Fd With Mre Than Five Ingredients(佐料)
Simple fds are nt necessarily healthier fr yu. If I, fr instance, use Chinese five spice pwder in a recipe, that wuld cunt as ne f the five ingredients. Hwever, what if I added the typical cmpnents f five spice pwder separately int a dish? Des that mean my recipe suddenly becmes bad because it has mre than five ingredients?
21. Accrding t the passage, healthier fat ______.
A. can be fund in fish and plantsB. cmes frm land-based animals
C. remains slid at rm temperatureD. can lwer the death rate f elders
22. The passage suggests that ______.
A. diets can help adjust the pH f ur bldB. hney sugar can d mre gd than sucrse
C. fds with mre ingredients may be as healthyD. chemicals we can recgnize are safer t take in
23 What is the main purpse f the passage?
A. T cmpare tips n fd chices.B. T intrduce different health cncepts.
C. T recmmend fitness recipes t readers.D. T warn us f sme dietary misunderstandings.

At my first lessn in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher tld me plainly: “Nw I will teach yu hw t write yur name. And t make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch. I was curius.
Grwing up in Singapre, I had an unusual relatinship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, s they asked frtune tellers t decide my name, aiming fr maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nnsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, rughly, “l(fā)d”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”.
When I arrived in America fr cllege at 18, I put n an American accent and abandned my Chinese name. When I mved t Hng Kng in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided t learn calligraphy. Why nt get back in tuch with my heritage? I thught.
In calligraphy, the idea is t cpy the ld masters’ techniques, thereby refining yur wn. Every week, thugh, my teacher wuld give uncmfrtably n-the-nse assessments f my persn. “Yu need t be braver,” he nce bserved. “Have cnfidence. Try t prduce a bld strke(筆畫).” Fr years, I had prided myself n presenting an image f cnfidence, but my writing betrayed me.
I was trying t make sense f this practice. Yu must visualize the wrd as it is t be written and leave a trace f yurself in it. As a bdily practice, calligraphy culd g beynd its wn cultural restrictins. Culd it help me g beynd mine? My teacher nce said t me, “When yu lk at the wrd, yu see the bdy. Thugh a wrd n the page is tw-dimensinal, it cntains multitudes, cnveying the frce yu’ve applied, the energy f yur grip, the arch f yur spine.” I had been learning calligraphy t get in tuch with my cultural rts, but what I was really seeking was a return t myself. Nw I have sensed that the pleasure ut f calligraphy allws me t knw myself mre fully.
During a recent lessn, my teacher pinted at the wrd I had just finished, telling me: “This wrd is much better. I can see the chices yu made, yur calculatins, yur flw. Trust yurself. This wrd is yurs.” He might as well have said, “This wrd is yu.”

“Assume yu are wrng.” The advice came frm Brian Nsek, a psychlgy prfessr, wh was ffering a strategy fr pursuing better science.
T understand the cntext fr Nsek’s advice, we need t take a step back t the nature f science itself. Yu see despite what many f us learned in elementary schl, there is n single scientific methd. Just as scientific theries becme elabrated and change, s d scientific methds.
But methdlgical refrm hasn’t cme withut sme fretting and frictin. Nasty things have been said by and abut methdlgical refrmers. Few peple like having the value f their life’s wrk called int questin. On the ther side, few peple are gd at vicing criticisms in kind and cnstructive ways. S, part f the challenge is figuring ut hw t bake critical self-reflectin int the culture f science itself, s it unflds as a welcme and integrated part f the prcess, and nt an embarrassing sideshw.
What Nsek recmmended was a strategy fr changing the way we ffer and respnd t critique. Assuming yu are right might be a mtivating frce, sustaining the enrmus effrt that cnducting scientific wrk requires. But it als makes it easy t interpret criticisms as persnal attacks. Beginning, instead, frm the assumptin yu are wrng, a criticism is easier t interpret as a cnstructive suggestin fr hw t be less wrng — a gal that yur critic presumably shares.
One wrry abut this apprach is that it culd be demralizing fr scientists. Striving t be less wrng might be a less effective mtivatin than the prmise f being right. Anther cncern is that a strategy that wrks well within science culd backfire when it cmes t cmmunicating science with the public. Withut an appreciatin fr hw science wrks, it’s easy t take uncertainty r disagreements as marks against science, when in fact they reflect sme f the very features f science that make it ur best apprach t reaching reliable cnclusins abut the wrld. Science is reliable because it respnds t evidence: as the quantity and quality f ur evidence imprves, ur theries can and shuld change, t.
Despite these wrries, I like Nsek’s suggestin because it builds in cgnitive humility alng with a sense that we can d better. It als builds in a sense f cmmunity — we’re all in the same bat when it cmes t falling shrt f getting things right.
Unfrtunately this still leaves us with an untested hypthesis (假說): that assuming ne is wrng can change cmmunity nrms fr the better, and ultimately supprt better science and even, perhaps, better decisins in life. I dn’t knw if that’s true. In fact, I shuld prbably assume that it’s wrng. But with the benefit f the scientific cmmunity and ur best methdlgical tls, I hpe we can get it less wrng, tgether.
28. What can we learn frm Paragraph 3?
A. Refrmers tend t devalue researchers’ wrk.
B. Scientists are unwilling t express kind criticisms.
C. Peple hld wrng assumptins abut the culture f science.
D. The scientific cmmunity shuld practice critical self-reflectin.
29. The strategy f “assuming yu are wrng” may cntribute t ______.
A. the enrmus effrts f scientists at wrkB. the reliability f ptential research results
C. the public’s passin fr scientific findingsD. the imprvement in the quality f evidence
30. The underlined wrd “demralizing” in Paragraph 5 means ______.
A. discuragingB. ineffectiveC. unfairD. misleading
31. The tne the authr uses in talking abut the untested hypthesis is ______.
A. dubtful but sincereB. disapprving but sft
C. authritative and directD. reflective and humrus

Thse wh had the pleasure f watching Benny Gdman at wrk saw a rather rdinary-lking man in rimless glasses and a cnservative business suit; but they als saw a human being wh culd play the clarinet(單簧管) like n ne befre r since. This made Benny Gdman a unique individual.
Other Americans wh have std ut frm the flck include Je DiMaggi, Beverly Sill, Ernest Hemingway and Jnas Salk. They, like Benny Gdman, were recgnized and hnred fr n ther reasn than excellence.
It is ding smething better than ther peple that makes us unique. Yet a surprising number f peple still see individuality as a surface thing. They wear garish clthes, dye their hair strange clrs and decrate their skin with tatts t make sme kind f scial statement. But an rdinary guy wh has dyed his hair purple r range is nthing mre than the same persn with a funny-lking head.
The whle purpse f individuality is excellence. Thse wh invent, wh imprvise(即興發(fā)揮), wh knw mre abut a subject than ther peple d, and wh take smething that desn’t wrk and make it wrk––these peple are the very sul f capitalism.
Charles Kettering didn’t like the idea f cranking a car t make it start, s he invented the electric starter. Henry Frd figured ut the assembly-line technique and made it pssible t mass-prduce autmbiles, and Elisha Otis, inventr f the elevatr, indirectly created the city sky-line. These peple understd that individualism means wrking at the tp f ne’s capacity.
The nes with the purple hair and the funky jewelry are just alng fr the ride, trying t be “different” and nt knwing hw t g abut it.
The student wh earns straight A’s n his reprt card has grasped the idea and has fund the real meaning f individuality. S has the yungster wh has designed his wn spaceship, wh gives pian recitals, wh paints pictures f the wrld arund him.
Benny Gdman understd it t. This is why he was at his best, blwing his clarinet, in a blue suit and black shes.
32. The authr mentins the appearance f Benny Gdman t _________.
A. shw what a talented musician shuld lk like
B. intrduce an imprtant figure in the musical wrld
C. cntrast with his talent in music perfrmance
D. indicate that he can’t stand ut frm the flck
33. The authr wuld mst prbably agree that _________.
A. an individualist tends t seek difference bth in character and appearance
B. the essence f individualism lies in pursuing excellence t the full
C. being different in appearance is the very first step t being individual
D. thse wh strive t win the recgnitin f thers are real individualists
34. Accrding t the passage, which individual’s actins may nt truly embdy the essence f individualism?
A A scientist wh cnducts research slely advancing knwledge fr the greater gd rather than fr persnal recgnitin.
B. A scial media influencer wh cnfrms t ppular pinins t maintain a large fllwing.
C. An artist wh creates unique wrks but fail t gain fame and recgnitin frm thers.
D. An entrepreneur wh priritizes ethical cnsideratins ver prfit in his business practices.
35. Fr the main thread, the article is rganized by way f __________.
A. specific t generalB. cause and effect
C. examples and cnclusinD. cmparisn and cntrast

Art Builds Understanding
Despite the lng histry f schlarship n experiences f art, researchers have yet t capture and understand the mst meaningful aspects f such experiences, including the thughts and insights we gain when we visit a museum, the sense f encunter after seeing a meaningful wrk f art, r the changed thinking after experiences with art. These pwerful encunters can be inspiring, uplifting, and cntribute t well-being and flurishing.
____36____ It cntributes t facilitating a better understanding f urselves, the human cnditin, and mral and spiritual cncepts. The questin is hw that happens — what are the attributes f meaningful experiences f art?
Accrding t the mirrr mdel f art develped by Pabl P. L. Tini, aesthetic receptin crrespnds t artistic creatin in a mirrr-reversed fashin. Artists aim t express ideas and messages abut the human cnditin r the wrld at large. ____37____ This results in the build-up f layers f materials — frm initial studies and sketches t the final, refined piece. A viewer’s initial interactin with an artwrk starts where the artist has left ff. Their interactin first invlves the prcessing surface features, such as clr, texture, and the finishing tuches applied by the artist during the final stages f the creative prcess. ___38___
In additin, art making and art viewing are cnnected by creative thinking. Research in a lab at Yale University shws that an educatinal prgram that uses art appreciatin activities builds creative thinking skills. It shwed that the mre time visitrs spent engaging with art and the mre they reflected n it, the greater the crrespndence with the artists’ intentins and ideas. ___39___
Crrespndence in feeling and thinking suggests a transfer — between creatr and viewer — f ideas, cncepts, and emtins cntained in the wrks f art. Art has the ptential t cmmunicate acrss space and time. ___40___ What it takes fr this t happen is active engagement with art in cntexts that facilitate this engagement, especially museums.
A. The viewers gain a new perspective n the stry.
B. The thery f aesthetic cgnitivism describes the value f art.
C. This helps t create cnnectins and insights that therwise wuld nt happen.
D. T d s, they explre key ideas and cntinually expand them as they develp their wrk.
E. After spending mre time with the wrk, the viewer begins t access the ideas f the artist.
F. Fr example, in ne activity, peple are asked t view a wrk f art frm different perspectives.
G. Participants were mre riginal in their thinking when cmpared t thse wh did nt take part in the prgram.

Heads r Tails?
Careful: It’s nt 50-50
The phrase “cin tss” is a classic synnym fr randmness. But since the 18th century, mathematicians have ____41____ that even fair cins tend t land n ne side slightly mre ften than the ther. Prving this tiny bias, ____42____, wuld require hundreds f thusands f carefully recrded cin flips, making labratry tests a lgistical (后勤的,組織協(xié)調(diào)的) ____43____.
Franti?ek Bart?, currently a Ph.D. candidate studying the research methds f psychlgy at the University f Amsterdam, became interested in this ____44____ fur years ag. He culdn’t ____45____ enugh vlunteers t investigate it at first. But after he began his Ph.D. studies, he tried again, recruiting 47 vlunteers frm six cuntries. Multiple weekends f cin flipping later, including ne 12-hur marathn ____46____, the team perfrmed 350,757 tsses, breaking the previus recrd f 40,000.
With ne side initially upward, the flipped cin landed with the same side facing ____47____ as befre the tss 50.8 percent f the time. The large number f thrws allws ____48____ t cnclude that the nearly 1 percent bias isn’t a fluke (僥幸). “We can be quite sure there is a bias in cin flips after this data set,” Bart? says.
The leading thery explaining the ____49____ advantage cmes frm a 2007 physics study by Stanfrd University statisticians, whse calculatins predicted a same-side bias f 51 percent. Frm the mment a cin is launched int the air, its entire track — including whether it lands n heads r tails — can be calculated by the laws f _____50_____. The researchers determined that airbrne cins dn’t turn arund their symmetrical axis (對(duì)稱軸); _____51_____, they tend t mve ff-center, which causes them t spend a little mre time high in the air with their initial “up” side n tp.
Fr day-t-day decisins, cin tsses are as gd as randm because a 1 percent bias isn’t _____52_____ with just a few cin flips, says statistician Ameli, wh wasn’t invlved in the new research. Still, the study’s cnclusins shuld eliminate any lasting dubt regarding the cin flip’s slight bias. “This is great experiment-based evidence _____53_____ the bias,” she says.
It isn’t difficult t prevent this bias frm influencing yur cin-tss matches; simply _____54_____ the cin’s starting psitin befre flipping it shuld d the trick. But if yur friends are _____55_____ the tiny bias, yu may as well benefit frm yur slight advantage. After all, 51 percent dds beat a casin’s huse advantage. “If yu asked me t bet n a cin,” Bart? says, “why wuldn’t I give myself a 1 percent bias?”

Why We Shuld Recrd Travel Mments
On a rainy summer day, I tk a train t Switzerland and trekked thrugh the mud t a medieval frtress high atp a cliff. After twisting thrugh its dimly lit crridrs, I finally _____56_____ (arrive) at the main viewpint f Cave f the Fairies: a plunging 77m waterfall that shts frm undergrund int a sparkling pl. Envirnmental scientist Lauren Kuehne said, “I think that nce yu start t listen, nce yu actually start t listen, yu start t appreciate hw much _____59_____ (big) the wrld is.”
This attitude _____60_____ (ech) by Samara Kester, a retired emergency medicine physician wh nw serves n QPI’s bard. “A phtgraph is tw dimensins. _____61_____ yu are lking at smething yu’re seeing, it’s maybe 180 degrees, maybe 270 degrees. Sund is 360 degrees.
