Zhu Dejun's first jb after graduating frm cllege was as a rad design engineer in his hmetwn, Alshaa League, Nrth Chin's Inner Mnglia autnmus regin(內蒙古自治區(qū)). In 2011, when Zhu was cnducting a rad survey alng with his clleagues, he saw a plant that he didn't recgnize. Later, Zhu learned that the plant was a saxaul (灌木梭梭) tree which is an excellent tree species fr sand fixatin and affrestatin (造林) in desert areas. Knwn as a desert guardian, a fully grwn saxaul tree can hld tgether a 10-square-meter patch f desert land, accrding t Zhu.
Zhu quit (辭去) his jb at the design institute in 2014 and jined a nnprfit rganizatin, the Sciety f Entrepreneurs and Eclgy Cnservatin, r SEE, in the same year, cncentrating n dealing with desertificatin (沙漠化) .During the past eight years, Zhu has been leading a team frm SEE t plant saxaul trees in sandy areas in Alshaa League and ther places f Inner Mnglia.
In 2014, the SEE launched a prject titled "ne millin saxaul trees", aiming t reach that number frm 2014 t 2023, turning the desert f mre than 133, 330 hectares (公頃) back int a satisfying ecsystem. By the end f 2018, half f the rganizatin's gal had been achieved. In 2016, Ant Finance cperated with SEE t intrduce the Ant Frest platfrm, nt nly encuraging peple t chse "a lw-carbn way" f shpping, traveling and living, but als t help cntrl desertificatin.

In the past week, 380,000 peple have been evacuated due t flds in China's Henan prvince,30 villages in Uganda were affected as rivers verflwed and 25 peple died in landslides after Mumbai was hit by big strms. Temperatures in Turkey and Nrth Africa apprached 50 ℃, while Suth Africa and Brazil frze. Siberia is battling wildfires again. Finland experienced 31 cntinued days with maximum temperatures abve 25 ℃, the lngest heatwave ever recrded in the cuntry. In Iran, the httest summer in decades has led t water shrtages that in turn caused prtests in the cuntry's suthwest.
All these disasters are part f a series f extreme weather events that paint a picture f a wrld that's already warmed 1.2 C frm pre-industrial times. There's n dubt that it will get warmer.
The glbal climate is ut f balance, German meterlgist Jhannes Quaas said in an interview last week. Our climate's reactin t greenhuse gas emissins isn't immediate. The warming and resulting weather events that we see tday are a reactin t emissins that entered the atmsphere decades ag.
Scientists estimate that, even if we meet glbal emissins reductin gals, the planet will cntinue t warm after that. That will take the planet t smewhere between 1. 5 ℃ t 2 C abve pre-industrial times by the end f the century. The edible straws are cmpletely plastic free, nntxic, chemical free, and 100 percent bidegradable accrding t a cmpany press release.
"It's well knwn that plastic straws are harmful t the envirnment. Mst f the 500 millin used every day in America end up in ceans where they pllute water and harm marine life. Currently ver eight billin straws pllute the wrld's beaches," said Marina Tran-Vu in the press release. "Althugh there are sme plastic and paper straw alternatives n the market, mst are envirnmentally harmful, and we were als unsatisfied with the quality and lasting f paper straws."
All f the materials are lcally frm regins that supprt sustainable farming accrding t the cmpany's website and they struggle t have zer-net influence by" using the pwer f mther nature". The name f the cmpany was created by cmbining "ECO" — meaning envirnmentally friendly — with "STATUS QUO" — meaning the existent state. Many cuntries are banning single-use plastics. The EU banned 10 single-use plastic prducts including straws that will take effect in 2021.
