Smetimes, a terrible tragedy (悲劇) can encurage us t d imprtant things. Dashrath Manjhi was brn int a pr family in Gehlaur village, India in 1934. He ran away frm hme when he was yung and began wrking in the cal mines (煤礦) in Dhanbad. Later he returned t his hme village and gt married.
One terrible day in 1959, his wife, Falguni Devi, fell frm the village muntain and was badly hurt. The nearest twn with a dctr was clse but a muntain std in the way. The path (小路) arund the muntain made the jurney 90 kilmeters. Falguni died befre they culd see the dctr.
Manjhi wanted t d smething. He decided t cut a path thrugh the muntain s that the village culd reach medical care faster.
He tk a hammer (錘子) and chisel (鑿子) and began hammering thrugh the muntain. Peple thught he was mad but he cntinued. He made a path 110 meters lng, 7.7 meters deep and 9.1 meters wide. It tk 22 years but Manjhi cmpleted the rad in 1982. It cut the distance between the village and the neighbring areas frm 55 t 15 km. Fr his wrk, Manjhi became knwn as the Muntain Man.
After his death in 2007 at the age f 73, an fficial rad was built thrugh the muntain. Manjhi was given a state funeral (葬禮) and his face was put n a stamp in 2016. He has had films and dcumentaries made abut him. He used his terrible persnal tragedy t d smething that wuld hpefully stp thers frm experiencing such tragedy in their wn lives.

The idea f specially chsing a day t celebrate bks came frm Spanish writer Vicente Clavel Andres. In 1922 he suggested the idea as a way t remember Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes. Fur years later the first celebratin tk place n Octber 7th, because it is said t be Cervantes’ birthday. But the celebratin was then mved t April 23rd, the date f his death in 1930.
In 1995, the UNESCO decided t pay tribute t writers and bks arund the wrld as a way f encuraging everyne t read bks. Chsing April 23rd seemed prper.
