Here’s an all-t-familiar situatin: Yu excitedly packed fr yur beach trip. Luckily, yu remembered all the necessities: scks, underwear, a phne charger and yur passprt, etc. But upn arrival, yu realized yu frgt t bring yur tthbrush. In a new study, researchers suggest fflading imprtant t-d items —fr example, by setting reminders n yur phne — culd clear brain space t better remember the little things, like yur tthbrush.
T prve this, the researchers develped a memry task t be played n a tuch screen cmputer. The test was undertaken by 158 vlunteers aged between 18 and 71.They were shwn 12 numbered circles n the screen. and had t remember t drag sme f these t the left and sme t the right. The number f circles that they remembered t drag t the crrect side decided their rewards at the end f the experiment. One side was “high value”, meaning that remembering t drag a circle t this side was wrth 10 times as much mney as remembering t drag a circle t the ther “l(fā)w value” side.
Vlunteers perfrmed this task 16 times. They had t use their wn memry t remember at half f the trials and they were allwed t set reminders n the external digital devices fr the ther half.
The researchers fund vlunteers tended t use the digital devices t stre details f the high-value circles. And, when they did s, their memry fr thse circles was imprved by 18%. “What was unexpected was that their memry fr lw-value circles was als imprved by 27%, even in thse wh had never set any reminders fr lw-value circles,” said Sam Gilbect.
Hwever, results als shwed a ptential cst t using reminders. When reminders were taken away, the vlunteers remembered the lw-value circles better than the high-value nes. “Far frm causing digital dementia (癡呆), using a memry device can even imprve ur memry fr infrmatin that we never saved. But we need t be careful that we back up the mst imprtant infrmatin. Otherwise, if a memry tl fails, we culd be left with nthing but less imprtant infrmatin in ur wn memry,” Gilbert said.
