Practicing Chinese with Chinese friends
I started taking a shrt beginners’ curse in Chinese when I was in the UK. Since I came t China in 2021, I have been using an APP n my phne called Hell Chinese. Chinese can make language simpler
When I wrked at Tsinghua University, ne f my jbs was translating infrmatin frm Chinese t English. Each day I wuld find smething new and interesting abut Chinese. Chinese can be emtive (有感染力的) and ften give ut infrmatin simpler than English. Fr example, a Chinese sign n campus might read, “疫情期間隔坐,人人有責(zé)”. But the English sign wuld read: “During the pandemic, please sit apart frm each ther. We are all respnsible fr ding ur part.” The English ne is much lnger and nt as simple.

Learning is fun with tngue twisters
I’ve always been amazed by tngue twisters (繞口令) in Chinese. English has its wn tngue twisters, fr example: “Sally sells seashells by the sea cast”. But Chinese takes it a step frward with its use f fur tnes (聲調(diào)).
As a native English speaker, I first learned Chinese thrugh the use f pinyin. But as I fund ut, even when the letters in pinyin are the same, different tnes can result in different Chinese wrds, like 馬 vs 媽. But things get harder when this is used in tngue twisters!
Can yu manage this ne? Furteen is furteen, frty is frty; furteen is nt frty, frty is nt furteen.
