When the first supermarket pened its drs 75 years ag, shppers were in shck. That day in January 1948 changed the way peple in the UK shpped. Within 10 years, supermarkets were springing up all ver Britain. Peple culd find ne almst anywhere. The first ne-stp supermarket pened in Nttingham shire, England, in 1964. It had 50 departments and sld everything under ne rf. Arund 30, 000 peple and 1,000 cars turned up n its pening weekend, causing traffic jams. Tday, 9 ut f 10 peple buy things frm supermarkets.
Supermarkets are using technlgy t make shpping easier. Amazn Fresh shps use cameras and shelves t see and weigh what peple buy. In the US “smart trlleys” scan (掃描) bjects when they are drpped in and make it easy fr custmers t find things. Engineers in Hng Kng have designed self-driving trlleys. Supermarkets are lking fr smarter ways t send things, t. Cles supermarket in Australia uses drnes(無人機(jī)) t fly things t custmers’ drs.

Scientists have knwn fr a lng time that humans and ther apes (類人猿) have many physical similarities. Nw, new research has shwn that we may als share a language because we use the same physical gestures (手勢) t cmmunicate.
Researchers already knew that great apes use mre than 80 gestures t cmmunicate with each ther. Tuching each ther, r hlding hands is a way f greeting, while pinting their fingers dwn beside them means “cme here”. The apes might als ask fr fd frm each ther by cupping (做杯狀) a hand under anther ape’s face.
T test whether humans can understand these gestures, sme scientists frm the University f St Andres in Sctland brught 5,656 vlunteers tgether. The scientists shwed them 20 vides f apes making gestures. After watching each vide, the vlunteers had t guess what the ape’s gestures were cmmunicating. The scientists gave sme infrmatin t ne grup f vlunteers, letting them knw what the apes had been ding befre they made each gesture. This grup crrectly guessed the meaning f the gestures 57% f the time. The ther peple, wh were nt given infrmatin abut the ape’s activities, still succeeded 52% f the time. This suggests that humans seem t understand what apes’ gestures mean.
Scientists need t d mre wrk t find ut exactly why humans understand the gestures. Researcher Kirsty Graham said that bth humans and apes prbably inherited (繼承) the gestures frm ur last cmmn ancestr. It is als pssible that althugh humans have a spken language, we kept ur ability t use gestures t cmmunicate. “In future, we hpe t learn mre abut hw gestures develp thrugh the apes’ lifetimes,” Dr Graham added.
