But despite several warnings frm lved nes that sme f my respnses were judgmental and that I was t quick t attack an pinin, I all but killed that grup text. It had a gd 12 peple in it. We’d shared laughs, encuragement, and funny memes (表情包). It tk nly ne cnversatin — which I was in the middle f — t end it.
I realized that I had a prblem. The medium fr my prblem is the smartphne. Befre smartphnes enabled instant cmmunicatin, peple talked n the telephne. In persn, yu culd cut in a “What d yu mean by that?” t crrect a misunderstanding befre it gt ut f hand. Dn’t get me wrng: I lve a gd grup text. It makes me feel cnnected t peple in a way that I just can’t seem t anymre, nw that I have a wife and kids.
I’m learning, but I had a relapse (復(fù)發(fā)) recently. I jined a new text grup. I intrduced my “questin f the day” feature. I fled myself int thinking that I was encuraging a healthy debate n current events. N. Others in the grup saw it as me trying t prve that my way was the right way. Then I made the mistake f sharing sme persnal infrmatin that ne friend had tld me during a phne cnversatin. I thught everyne knew. Then this friend started referring t me as a snitch — nt terms f kind wrd. S I asked him abut it — in persn. That’s when he tld me I’d shared sensitive infrmatin he hadn’t tld anyne else. I aplgized plentifully and came away frm the cnversatin mre determined t slw dwn my texts.
My new reslve seems t be wrking. Yu shuld be pleased t knw that I have avided making a few pints that I was tempted (鼓動(dòng)) t make in individual and grup texts. In sme cases, I didn’t even respnd. I haven’t lst any mre cnnectins by ding this.

Few peple realize it, but glaciers (冰川) are full f tiny air bubbles (氣泡). They frm as snw, accumulating ver thusands f years, slwly packs int ice under its wn weight — squishing the air that was trapped between snwflakes int tiny hles. Erin Pettit, a scientist, and her clleagues had suspected that bubbles culd be imprtant. T test this idea, they undertk a series f labratry experiments.
They find that as the ice melted, the resulting fresh water rse, because it was less dense than the surrunding sea water. This created a rising current alng the vertical face f the ice — a prf f what ccurs at the frnt f a real tidewater glacier. When the glacial ice melted, the current that it prduced was six times faster than what was seen with the bubble-free ice because the rising bubbles pulled the water up mre quickly. The glacial ice melted 2.25 times mre quickly than the bubble-free ice. “That’s a very pwerful effect. If that’s the reality in nature, then it’s quite serius.”
The newly discvered bubble effect culd explain sme f that extra melting, says Mathieu Mrlighem, a scientist. “It’s imprving ur understanding, but it’s nt painting a darker picture f what’s happening tday,” he says.
Pettit ntes that in Alaska, many bays with tidewater glaciers have large ppulatins f harbr seals. The animals shelter there while mlting and raising babies. But in Glacier Bay, where the tidewater glaciers retreated (后退) many miles inland, the seal ppulatins have declined. Pettit nw suspects that the raring rhythm f explding bubbles prvides a hiding place where seals can avid detectin by killer whale, which ften find their victim by listening. The bubbles may mask the seals’ sunds — at least until the ice retreats ut f hearing. This may turn ut t be yet anther way in which these tiny bubbles have surprisingly large-scale effects.

While Industry 5.0 is believed t have started in 2020, the rise f AI in recent years has led experts t say it is nw cming. Imagine AI-pwered rbts that see, hear, tuch and mre, pling fresh data frm acrss thse grups f sensrs t create that data with the vast ranges f digital data stred elsewhere nline. The age is a majr leap frm the First Industrial Revlutin, when steam engine started t achieve widespread cmmercial use.
Prfessr Jhn Nsta says, “The integratin f sensry capabilities int AI mdels is nt merely a technlgical leap. It represents a shift in ur philsphical understanding f artificial and human intelligence.”
He has als referred t the new era as “the Cgnitive (認(rèn)知) Age,” which will cmpletely change hw humans live, wrk, and think abut themselves. Accrding t Nsta, humans dn’t typically think f cmputers as “experiencing” the wrld themselves. But that assumptin will be challenged as mre advanced AI systems are hked up t ever mre and ever greater sensrs. The machines wn’t just be lgic bxes that humans input data and cmmands fr prcessing. The AI will cllect that data mre and mre n its wn, experiencing the wrld fr itself.
“This is nt just abut understanding wrds, but als abut grasping the tne, pitch (音高), and emphasis, which add layers f meaning ften absent in written text. Image recgnitin adds anther layer f cmplexity,” he added. “Fr example, it can analyze phtgraphs, identify bjects, and even understand the emtinal cntent f facial expressins.”
The Jhannesburg-based business schl is just ne f many cllege-level prgrams attempting t investigate and teach its students abut the still-emerging IR 5.0. With each failed attempt t break the windw — the glass buncing back at me — I felt a grwing sense f urgency. Water mved ver the flrbards, cling my feet. “Strmy, stay calm,” I said, lying dwn t kick at the windw with all my strength. But my effrts nly met resistance.
