The ambassadr prgram is mainly spnsred by the Library f Cngress. Data shw that almst all children see a decline in their happiness when they make the step up t Key Stage Three, with self-reprted happiness taking a significant hit. Infrmatin frm mre than 11,000 peple shwed the impact was universal and that children frm all backgrunds, ethnicities and lcatins feel wrse aged 14 than they d aged 11, with the change in schl thught t be the driving reasn.
Scientists asked children t rank n a scale f ne t seven hw satisfied they were with their schlwrk, appearance, schl, family, friends and life as a whle. One was “cmpletely happy” and seven was “cmpletely unhappy”.
Statisticians crunched(壓縮) the numbers dwn t a scale between -2 and 1, with the average happiness being a scre f zer when a child was 11. Hwever, by the time the child was 14, fur in five teenagers had a scre f belw zer, indicating a widespread dwnturn in adlescent happiness. That decline is prbably linked t the change t secndary schl at age 11, accrding t the study’s authrs.
Iannis Katsantnis, a dctral researcher at Cambridge's Faculty f Educatin wh led the study, said, “Even thugh this was a large, diverse grup f adlescents, we saw a cnsistent fall in happiness.”
“One f the mst striking aspects was the clear assciatin with changes at schl. It suggests we urgently need t d mre t supprt students’ happiness at secndary schls acrss Britain.”
The study identified that a child's friendships and schl life were key in their level f happiness, with the mve t a bigger schl and the ptential prblems with making new friends having a damaging impact n hw they felt.
Hwever, the scientists reprt that children with higher self-esteem(自尊心) aged 11 lived thrugh the strm f mving t secndary schl better than thse wh had lwer self-esteem.
This indicates that structured effrts t strengthen adlescents' self-esteem, particularly during the first years f secndary schl, culd reduce the likely dwnturn in happiness and life satisfactin, the authrs say.

The 19th century landscape paintings in the museum lked awfully familiar t climate physicist Albright. Artist Turner's signature way f cvering his views in fg and smke reminded Albright f her wn research—tracking air pllutin. After all, Turner—a frerunner f the impressinist mvement—was painting as Britain's industrial revlutin gathered steam and smke.
T find ut hw much realism there is in impressinism, Albright teamed up with Harvard University climatlgist Peter Huybers. Their analysis f nearly 130 paintings by Turner, Paris-based impressinist Claude Mnet and several thers tells a tale f tw mdernizing cities.
Lw cntrast and whiter clrs are typical f the impressinist style. They are als typical f air pllutin.Tiny aersls(氣溶膠) can absrb r distribute light. That makes the bright parts f bjects appear less bright while als shifting the entire scene's clr tward white.
Albright and Huybers distinguished art frm aersls by first using a mathematical mdel t analyze the cntrast and clr f 60 paintings that Turner made between 1796 and 1850 as well as 38 Mnet wrks frm 1864t 1901. They then cmpared the findings t sulfur dixide emissins(二氧化硫排放量) ver the century and estimated frm the trend in the annual amunt f cal sld and burned in Lndn and Paris. When sulfur dixide reacted with mlecules(分子) in the atmsphere, aersls frmed.
As sulfur dixide emissins increased ver time, the amunt f cntrast in bth Turner's and Mnet's paintings decreased. Hwever, paintings f Paris that Mnet made frm 1864 t 1872 have much higher cntrast than Turner’s last paintings f Lndn made tw decades earlier. They wed the difference t the much slwer start f the industrial revlutin in France. Paris’air pllutin level arund 1870 was abut what Lndn’s was when Turner started painting in the early 1800s. It cnfirmed that the similar prgress in their painting styles culdn't be cincidence, but was guided by air pllutin, the pair cncluded.
32. What is the purpse f Albright and Huyber's analysis?
A. T distinguish between art and aersls.
B. T understand different schls f painting better.
C. T figure ut the effects f the real life n impressinism.
D. T find the relatinship between realists and impressinists.
33. What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?
A. The cmparisns f aersls and sulfur dixide. B. Hw the researchers carried ut their research.
C. The effects f aersls n the paintings. D. Why aersls frmed in the atmsphere.
34. What did Albright and Huybers's research find?
A. The paintings f Turner and Mnet were clsely linked t air pllutin.
B. The industrial revlutin in France started mre slwly accrdingly.
C. There were differences in Turner's and Mnet's painting styles.
D. Turner's and Mnet's painting styles were familiar t peple.
35. In which sectin f a newspaper can yu mst prbably find this text?
A. Entertainment. B. Health. C. Educatin. D. Envirnment.
