NANJING-China’s first slar satellite, ASO-S, is scheduled t launch in the first half f 2022, marking the cuntry’s first-ever missin t bserve the sun.
The satellite will perate in an rbit abve Earth t maintain a view f the sun 24 hurs a day. It is expected t be in rbit fr at least 4 years, accrding t Gan Weiqun, a researcher frm the prject.
The sun is the nly fixed star that can be studied in detail by humans. The vast majrity f its radiatin is blcked by Earth’s atmsphere. Only by sending satellites int space can a cmplete picture f the sun be presented fr further studies.
The satellite will als realize its ptential in space weather frecasting. Sun activities can be detected at least 40 hurs ahead f their arrival by the satellite. This can help with early warnings f damage t Earth’s envirnment.
Since the 1960s, mre than 70 satellites related t slar bservatin have been launched glbally. The ASO-S is expected t fill China’s gap in the field, accrding t Gan.
