Firewrks shws are increasingly criticized fr their negative envirnmental impact—they are nisy, plluting, and wasteful. Cncerns are regularly raised arund their impact n sensitive wildlife ppulatins and the increased risk f wildfires.
These and ther factrs have led many peple t cnsider replacing firewrks displays with alternatives—and drne (無(wú)人機(jī)) light shws are perfectly psitined t fill the gap.
Drne light shws are perfrmed by illuminated grups f drnes that arrange themselves int varius aerial frmatins. Almst any image can be recreated in the sky by a cmputer prgram that turns graphics int flight cmmands and cmmunicates them t the drnes.
Hwever, creating a system that can be flwn safely and repeatedly requires a lt f clever engineering wrk. The flight crew uses a detailed dashbard display n the grund statin t prepare drnes fr flight and cntinuusly mnitr status. The drnes themselves carry multiple radis perating simultaneusly, away frm busy WiFi frequencies, t ensure cmmunicatins are maintained even in busy and nisy radi envirnments.
Shws are flwn by certified pilts. Prir t every shw, checklists are used t make sure everything is in rder: drnes are fully peratinal, batteries are charged, and the flight area is clear. Once these checks are cmplete, the pilt presses GO and the drnes take ff n their missin!
Regardless, the transitin frm firewrks t drnes will happen gradually. A number f factrs have limited the uptake f drne shws:

Pigens have a bad reputatin. Maybe these birds’ familiarity makes them an easy target: They are cmmn residents f every cntinent, save Antarctica. Sme peple think pigens are dirty r diseased, as they spend chunks f their days pecking at trash. It’s als an infrmative accunt f pigen histry, bilgy, and behavir, cmplete with Msc’s delightful illustratins.
Because pigens’ fates are s cnnected with ur wn, pigen histry clsely mirrrs urs. Pigens were distributed acrss the glbe due t centuries f Eurpean explratin and clnizatin. In Nrth America clnists hunted the native Passenger Pigen fr meat and destryed its native frest habitat, driving it t extinctin. Wherever humans dmesticated pigens, sme escaped and went wild: Tday’s city pigens are descended frm thse birds.
Msc says she’s met mre birders wh like pigens than thse wh hate them. Birders, with well-develped bservatin skills, can understand pigens’ entertaining behavir, she says. Plus, if pigens aren’t enugh f a draw n their wn, there culd be predatrs, such as hawks r falcns, nearby.
She wants all her readers t be kind t pigens. But she als hpes that sme will fllw their pigen fancy and becme hked n birding. “It’s my secret plt,” she says. After reading her bk, yu may agree with her that pigens are as wrthy a spark bird as any ther.

The needs f plus-size cnsumers have lng been the elephant in the rm f the fashin industry until bdy psitivity and fat acceptance mvements prmted the slgan (口號(hào)) that large-bdied peple are nt thse wh are left behind. This size-inclusive (尺碼包容) trend has becme s ppular that it is influencing mainstream culture. As a result, fashin brands have finally decided t extend their size ranges. This is even mre disrespectful.”
Researchers als criticize that sme brands are just taking advantage f the trend. “Brands that used t prmte s-called perfect bdies in their advertisements are nw trying t get in n the trend by adding a few sizes. It desn’t feel like they really care abut plus-size peple,” says Tm Burgess, analyst in fashin industry. “If brands cared abut large-bdied cnsumers, then it wuldn’t have taken until nw t acknwledge that they exist,” he says. “It gives the impressin that cmpanies are just trying t gain a share f the market withut a real cmmitment t the cmmunity.”
The fashin industry must g beynd merely prducing clthing in a range f sizes if they hpe t succeed with a bdy-diverse wrld. The whle industry has t cnnect n a persnal level with cnsumers. That invlves shwing shppers that they are seen, understd and imprtant t brands. “Cnsumers care abut values, and s they want t buy frm brands that reflect the values they believe in. Everyne shuld enjy the same range f fashin ptins,” says Ludvica Cesare, prfessr f marketing at the Cllege f Business in the US.

30. Fr what d researchers mainly criticize sme brands?
A. Their designs. B. Their quality.

I used t tell my children that they were smart, because I was impressed by their rapid grwth. I remember clearly watching my daughter figure ut hw t build a Leg huse that wuld stand up n its wn, and thinking: Lk at this tiny architectural genius.
But decades f research nw suggest that we shuld nt tell ur children they’re “smart” when they d impressive things. When I first heard it, I felt instinctively annyed. But after I dug int the research, I was persuaded. It all ges back t smething called“grwth”mindset (心態(tài)), a term develped and ppularized by Carl Dweck, a prfessr f psychlgy at Stanfrd. Prfessr Dweck believes that we can change ur abilities thrugh effrt and strategy. The alternative t a grwth mindset is a“fixed”mindset —the idea that ur abilities are inbrn and can’t be changed. When we praise ur children fr being “smart,” based n victries like ding well n a test, we’re uncnsciusly encuraging them t believe that if they d prly r make mistakes, they’re nt smart.
It’s nt just what we say that matters, but hw we tlerate ur children’s failures. A 2016 study by Dweck shwed that parents’ “failure mind-sets” affect their children mre than their views n intelligence. In ther wrds, if parents think that failure is shameful, their children are mre likely t be afraid f making mistakes. The study cncludes that everyne is actually a mixture f fixed and grwth mindsets, cntinually evlving with experience. Whatever we say r dn’t say t ur kids, the key is t get them mre cmfrtable with failures big r small.
It’s helpful fr kids t understand that yu make mistakes and learn hw they happen. When yu chat with them, yu can describe what yu learned, r hw yu strategized a slutin. “Yu dn’t have t deny yu have negative emtinal reactins,” Dweck said. “We, as a sciety, dn’t d that enugh because we feel embarrassed when we make mistakes.” But if we discuss ur missteps mre and explain hw we vercame them, ur children can learn t d the same.
32. What did the authr initially think f the research’s advice?
A. Cnvincing. B. Advanced.C. Inaccessible. D. Unacceptable.
33. Accrding t the Dweck, children with a grwth mindset tend t believe ______.
A. smartness is the key t success
B. difficulties in daily life teach them a lt
C. their abilities can be imprved thrugh hard wrk
D. they are impressive due t their gd grades n tests
34. What des Dweck suggest parents d?
A. Affect the children via their wn experience.
B. Hide their negative feelings frm children.
C. Remind children t avid making mistakes.
D. Pay attentin t develp children’s intelligence.
35. What des the passage mainly tell us?
A. The effect f a fixed mindset n children.
B. “Being smart” desn’t prepare kids fr failure.
C. The imprtance f being smart in family interactin.
D. “Being smart” is the pwer f praising in children’s grwth.

Hpefully, my heart was full f strength f striving fr my dreams. Hwever, yuth can als have cnfusin. I remember nce I failed the exam and felt s disappinted that I even culdn’t cheer up fr lng. It was the teachers’ and classmates’ help and cncern that pulled me ut f the dilemma. With encuragement and gratitude, I’ve been wrking hard t make prgress.
Cherishing yuth and learning gratitude, I believe I will achieve my dream.
Sample 3:
Independence: the key wrd(s) f my high schl life
Befre high schl, I lived a sheltered life, with my parents taking care f mst things. Hwever, as I entered high schl, a barding ne, I had t adapt t a new envirnment and way f life, which frced me t becme self-reliant.
With less supervisin, I had t learn t manage my time effectively. Creating a study schedule and sticking t it helped me keep rganized. Besides, learning t make decisins was anther challenge: Which subject t chse? Whether t jin a club? I had t cnsider my preferences and interests. Making these chices allwed me t discver wh I was and what I was passinate abut, which furthered my persnal grwth.
As a cnclusin, high schl is a transfrmative perid when I develped a sense f independence. It teaches me invaluable skills that I will carry thrugh t my future life.
