T avid falling dwn t the grund, insects need t knw which way is up, says study cauthr Yash Sndhi, a Natinal Gegraphic Explrer. Withut systems t maintain spatial (空間的) rientatin, the brightness f the sky, even at night, has always been a strng indicatr f “up”——until artificial lights came alng. If they mess that up, they start plummeting.
Sndhi and a team f researchers set up experiments t investigate hw different lights influence flight behavir. First, the researchers suspended a light bulb frm a rpe between tw trees——resembling a typical dwnward-pinting light——and in a separate test, they turned the light upward by munting it n a tripd (三腳架). In bth cases, insects leaned their winged backs t the bulb. But when the light was pinted up, the insects ften bumped t the grund.
What if the light is spread ver a wide area? The researchers stretched a large white sheet acrss the tree and prjected a UV light n it. If the insects were truly “attracted” t the light, they shuld fly up tward it. Instead, the insects cruised (巡航) straight thrugh this illuminated crridr, flying hw they wuld during the day. The team then placed the sheet n the grund and shined the light n it, which is when smething truly dd happened: All these mths flying ver it turned upside dwn and crashed ut f the sky.
