Then Simpsn fell int a crevasse (冰隙) and Yates eventually had n chice but t cut the rpe, utterly cnvinced that his friend was nw dead.
In his subsequent bk n the climb entitled “Tuching The Vid”, Je Simpsn wrte: “As I gazed at the distant mraines (冰磧石), I knew that I must at least try. I wuld prbably die ut there amid thse rcks. The thught didn’t alarm me. It seemed reasnable, matter-f-fact. That was hw it was. I culd aim fr smething. If I died, well, that wasn’t s surprising, but I wuldn’t have just waited fr it t happen. The hrrr f dying n lnger affected me as it had in the crevasse. I nw had the chance t cnfrnt it and struggle against it. My leg wuld hurt when I fell and when I culdn’t get up I wuld die.”
The survival f Simpsn himself was extrardinary. Artificial intelligence has taken the wrld by strm ver the curse f the last few years. Sme peple lve it, sme peple fear it, but there’s n questin that it’s here t stay, and in sme cases, help in unexpected ways.
One f thse ways is being pilted in Kingstn, in an effrt t make the planning and prpsal stage f rad-building smther. Sftware cmpany RedBit Develpment, rad safety cnstructin grup RSG Internatinal, and a Queen’s University student rganizatin called QMIND, are wrking tgether n the prject.
“We’ve decided t d this partnership with all three f us t see if we can d smething new in the cnstructin industry,” says Mark Arteaga, president and funder f RedBit Develpment. They’re wrking n an AI-based assistant t help engineers, architects and cntractrs prepare prpsals fr rad infrastructure (基礎(chǔ)建設(shè)) and similar prjects. “The AI kind f has all f the infrmatin and all the data,” says Arteaga. “It knws which bid r prpsal it needs t d r what it’s wrking n, and then the persn putting tgether the prpsal will ask it questins.”
Fr the students, it’s a nce-in-a-lifetime pprtunity t get hands-n experience with real wrld cmpanies, using the tech f the future. “Until very recently, there was a very high barrier f entry t really get yur hands n applied AI, especially when it’s ging t be implemented in the real wrld,” says Marcel Chaman Mallqui, managing directr f peratins fr QMIND. “Being able t be at QMIND prvides these pprtunities fr all f the members.”
The partnership is still in the early stages, what they’re calling the “discvery” stage, which invlves heavy research and data cllectin t help make the AI assistant as efficient and crrect as pssible. As fr the future f this prject, Chaman Mallqui says he’s excited t see this prject thrugh and pass dwn the knwledge t current and future QMIND members. “It’s kind f learning and living thrugh each ther,” he says. “Yu’re able t experience multiple lifetimes befre yu finish yur wn.”

Were it nt fr my mask’s rubber cvering ver my nse, n dubt his warm, fishy breath wuld have made the experience cmplete, as an adult male Atlantic grey seal (海豹) inspected me t the waters that bathe Crnwall and the Isles f Scilly. This was a clse and magical swimming-with-seals encunter filmed fr BBC Tw’s Springwatch fur years ag.
My jb is t get peple t lve and cnnect with nature, but the experience still left me feeling bth excited and cnflicted. Is it pssible that we get a little t clse, and lve nature a little t much? Certainly, fr anyne wrking in wildlife media and turism, the reality is that habitats and many species ften can’t handle lngtime clse cntact with humans.
Marine mammals they may be, but seals must regularly return t dry land, hauling (牽引) themselves ut f the water t rest, digest, and reprduce. Haul-ut sites are typically inaccessible beaches r rcky tiny islands after the tide falls away. These safe places becme a terrifying drp when disturbed, particularly by walkers, dgs and bats full f wildlife turists. When frightened, seals prefer escaping int shallw seas r, wrse still, hard rcks, risking brken jaws r bnes.
In Sctland in February 2021, a ban came int frce that stpped the fisheries industry frm shting seals. Prir t this, seals in Sctland culd be sht under licence. Seal grups and charities are revising their plicies t n lnger encurage peple t seek ut encunters with seals either in r ut f the water, especially during the winter mnths when the grey seal pupping (產(chǎn)崽) seasn is in full swing.
N matter hw much we lve seals, remember they are terrified f us, s we really need t enjy them frm a distance. But that is nt t say there can’t be a cnnectin. Jining rganised surveys helps mnitr seals as well as the health f ur waters. The marine mammals have much t deal with, including climate change, and we have a lt t learn frm these envys (使者) frm the sea.
12. Why did the authr film swimming-with-seals encunter fur years ag?
A. T get peple clse t nature.B. T inspect an Atlantic grey seal.
C. T challenge himself in the waters.D. T prmte BBC Tw’s TV prgramme.
13. What is the authr’s attitude t the swimming-with-seals experience?
A Cntradictry.B. Tlerant.C. Uncertain.D. Supprtive.
14. What is the authr’s purpse f writing paragraph 3?
A. T define the haul-ut sites f seals.B. T intrduce the living habit f seals.
C. T prve humans’ disturbance t seals.D. T present the safety prblem facing seals.
15. What des the authr suggest ding?
A. Stpping shting seals cmpletely.
B. Leaving seals alne especially in winter.
C. Reducing the influence f climate change n seals.
D. Cnnecting with seals indirectly by prtecting them.
