During 20 years f wrking at his family’s supermarket, Jsé Luis-Reig, knwn as Pep, never gave a thught t the wrld f academia (學(xué)術(shù)). It was nly when visiting the classrms f universities with his tw teenage daughters that he suddenly felt himself at hme amng ‘the atmsphere f learning’.
After schl Pep had intended t study bilgy but was called n t help run the family business instead. When he was at schl, he develped a reputatin fr helping thers and s was invited nt the lcal radi, where the presenter said. “Yu’re like a yung psychlgist (心理學(xué)家).”
Pep was n stranger t change. The family business had riginally been a sawmill (鋸木廠). But when Pep, then 27, was asked if he wanted t take ver, he decided t change the mill int the twn’s first supermarket.
One day in the shp, the radi presenter’s cmment came back t him. After running the idea past his family, he applied t a university in Palma t study psychlgy and, aged 46, was accepted.
“I had t get used t being much lder than the ther students.” he says. “But I ended up helping the thers because I’d had mre life experience.” Pep came tp f his year and impressed his tutrs (導(dǎo)師) s much that he was ffered a jb researching and teaching. Nw 52, and still in the jb. He adds, “My nly regret is nt having dne it earlier.”
The traditinal view used t be that, while making changes in yur yuth was acceptable, yu shuld then settle n a career and stick t it. But tday recrd numbers f 50-and 60-smethings are chsing t take n new challenges. Jb satisfactin becmes increasingly significant when yu’ve nly gt a few miles n the clck.

When yu praise a dg, it’s listening t nt just, the wrds yu say but als hw yu say them. That might nt be huge news t dg wners. But nw researchers have explred this phenmenn by using an imaging machine t lk inside the brains f 13 dgs as they listened t their wners’ vice.
The reward pathway in the dgs’ brains lit up when they heard bth praising wrds and an apprving intnatin (語(yǔ)調(diào))—but nt when they heard randm (隨機(jī)的) wrds spken in a praising tne r praising wrds spken in a flat tne, accrding t the researchers.
“Dgs deal with bth what we say and hw we say it in a way which is amazingly similar t hw humans d it,” says Attila Andics, a neurscientist in Hungary. When dgs hear speech, he explains, they seem t separate the meaning f wrds frm the intnatin. Then the left hemisphere (半球) f the brain deals with meaning, while intnatin is dealt with in the right hemisphere.
All the dgs in the study were willing vlunteers and were trained nt t mve in the scanner (掃描器). The dgs culd get up and leave the machine whenever they wanted. But it was clear t the dgs that their human cmpanins lved it when they did this very easy task. “They were really happy t take part,” says Andics. “The difficulty f the training was that they can’t mve mre than 3 millimeters in any directin, therwise we will have t thrw ut all f the data.”
He says mst dg wners have experimented with trying t “trick” their dgs by saying nnsense wrds in a cheerful, happy tne f vice. “I think the big difference here is that they nly heard us, and they didn’t see us,” says Andics, because the dgs were inside the machine. “Here, the nly infrmatin they had was the speech signal. What we saw is that fr praise t be dealt with as a reward, when there is n ther supprting infrmatin, bth wrd meaning and intnatin have t fit.”
28. What is regarded as a reward by dgs accrding t the study?
A. Praising wrds in a flat tne.B. Randm wrds in a flat tne.
C. Praising wrds in a praising tne.D. Randm wrds in a praising tne.
29. Hw d dgs deal with what they hear?
A. Fcus mre n the meaning.B. Fcus mre n the intnatin.
C. Use infrmatin frm their peers.D. Use the tw parts f the brain.
30. What is a hard part f the training in Andics’ pinin?
A. Lking int the dgs’ brain activity. B. Training dgs t stay still in the machine.
C. Keeping dgs separated frm their wners. D. Asking dgs t get up and leave the scanner.
31. Which f the fllwing culd be the best title fr the text?
A. Dgs Understand Tne and Meaning f WrdsB. Dgs Indeed Knw Hw t Praise
C. Dgs Can Recgnize Owners’ VicesD. Dgs Can Read Man’s Mds

In the cming decade, space agencies and private space cmpanies like SpaceX are planning t build a base n the Mn and Mars. While scientists are already building rckets fr the jurney, fr lng-term human settlements n them, astrnauts will need fuel t carry ut daily tasks. Many have suggested hydrgen (氫). But a grup f scientists is wrking n turning CO2 in the atmsphere int jet, fuel. As Mars is rich in CO2 and the lunar surface has a high cncentratin f CO2, it may be a feasible slutin.
Fr nw the team f scientists at the University f Oxfrd is fcusing n making jet fuel fr the aviatin (航空) industry. As the aviatin industry releases ver 900 millin tns f CO2 every year, t battle climate change, it is necessary t turn the tide. S far aviatin scientists have tried t use ther energy resurces like electricity t fly. But such flights are limited t shrt distances. Fr lng-distance flights, there is n alternative yet.
The cncept f turning CO2 int jet fuel is nt new. Previusly, ther similar methds had t rely n expensive catalysts (催化劑) like cbalt t speed up the chemical reactin. But what Oxfrd scientists suggest is adding a cheap irn-based catalyst and hydrgen t turn CO2 int liquid fuel. As the prcess wuld nt require using fssil fuel, it will make the industry carbn neutral (碳中和的).
The scientists tested the new catalyst in a lab at 300°C and at 10 times the air pressure at sea level. The entire prcess tk 20 hurs and turned 38 percent f CO2 int new chemicals. Abut 48 percent f the chemicals were jet fuel hydrcarbn and the rest were ther by-prducts that are used in the prductin f plastic.
Prfessr Peter Edwards, a lead scientist in the prject, said the new methd culd be imprved in tw t three years t prduce jet fuel in large quantities. “This is a really exciting, ptentially revlutinary advance. Our visin is that the wrld can see that CO2 cllected can be used as an energy carrier t enable sustainable aviatin.”
32. Which wrd can best explain “feasible” underlined in paragraph 1?
A. Unique.B. Practical.C. Time-tested.D. Quick.
33. What prblem des the aviatin industry face?
A. It is suffering frm a serius fuel shrtage. B. The traditinal jet fuel is much t expensive.
C. Climate change partly disturbs lng-distance flights. D. Its alternative energy resurces are nt available nw.
34. What d we knw abut the Oxfrd scientists’ methd f fuel-making?
A. It is green and cst-saving. B. It is cmplex and time-cnsuming.
C. It runs tests in natural envirnment. D. It starts with immediate chemical reactin.
35. What’s the purpse f the authr?
A. T attract peple t explre the space. B. T infrm us f a breakthrugh in fuel research.
C. T warn us the dangers f climate change. D. T encurage us t wrk in the aviatin industry.

Language is a part f culture and plays a very imprtant rle in it. 36 Yet language is nt the nly way t express ur ideas and feelings. Bdy mvement, eye cntact, gesture, and facial expressin are ther frms f language we call nnverbal cmmunicatin. 37 Accrding t Scial Anthrplgist, Edward T. Hall, in a nrmal cnversatin between tw persns, less than 15% f scial meaning is transmitted by wrds.
Different cultures have different ways f using nnverbal cmmunicatin and peple have different gestures t cnvey their expressins. Hwever, nnverbal cmmunicatin, like traffic, is nt randm (隨意的); it has a purpse. 38 Learning the different cmmn rules f bdy language in different cultures is very useful fr us t understand each ther better.
Peple cming frm the same culture share cmmn understanding by using the same bdy language such as eye management, facial expressins, gestures, and bdy mvements. 39 Fr example, “arms”, which are used little by Nrdics during a cnversatin, are an imprtant element in ne’s cmmunicative weapnry (武器) in Italy, Spain, and Suth America. 40 In these cultures, ne shuld stand with feet pressed tgether and hands interlaced (交錯(cuò)) in frnt f the bdy. In cultures such as America, where yu ften stand with yur feet shulder-length apart, arms at yur side, standing in this fashin might be interpreted as being shy and insecure.
A. Misuse f bdy language can be unpleasant.
B. And there are cmmn rules t guide its flw.
C. Withut language, culture wuld nt be pssible.
D. Bdy language makes up the largest part f ur nnverbal cmmunicatin.
E. But in different cultures nnverbal cmmunicatin takes n different patterns.
F. If yu’ re learning a new language, a great way is t watch mvies and TV shws.
G. In Africa, standing in a t “pen” fashin, means that yur psture might be inapprpriate.

One day my grandfather gave me a gift—a piggy bank. It had an pening thrugh which ne culd put mney in, but the pening was nt big enugh t reach in and get the mney ut. The nly way t get at the mney was t break the piggy bank pen. My grandfather explained that was the whle idea; the piggy bank wuld help save my mney s that, at the end f the year, I might have enugh fr that bike I dreamt abut. He asked if I wuld put sme f the mney he gave me int the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and prmised that I wuldn’t break it pen until I culd affrd my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me a little bit f mney, he wuld say, “This is fr spending. But yu can save sme and put it in the piggy bank if yu want t save it up.” When he gave me larger amunts, it was clearly fr saving in the piggy bank. Fr sme time, this wrked fine. I lved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sund f the cins. As it became heavier, I grew mre excited, dreaming abut buying my new bike, and all the adventures I culd have n it.
Whenever I wanted t take sme mney frm the piggy bank t buy delicius ice-creams r beautiful pens, I wuld imagine riding my bike n the street, and thinking f that, my thughts abut ice-creams r pens went away.
