When the day is dawning, the Center f Naxi Dngba Pictgraphs and Paintings f the ld twn Liliang welcmes his wner, He Runyuan, wh is dressed in a traditinal Naxi clthing. Every day, He explains Dngba culture t turists and teaches them t write Dngba characters. “Dngba characters are nt nly the sul f Dngba culture, but als a treasure fr the whle wrld,” said He. Enjying a histry f ver 1, 000 years, Dngba characters are an ancient system f pictgraphic glyphs (象形字形). They are praised t be the “l(fā)iving fssil (活化石)” in writing.
As a member f the Naxi grup, He first learned Dngba characters at the age f 13. He lved them immediately when he first lked at the symbls. “These characters have pictgraphic drawings that lk like humans, animals, plants etc.” He said. “They are usually clrful and recgnizable.”
Thugh the characters are interesting, learning them is never easy. Dngba culture is always mastered by Dngbas, the Naxi priests (祭司).
