It was a warm evening in August in 1995. Rbert Blcker was driving t Yale University after being appinted as the university’s Dean (院長) f Music. He didn’t expect t see many peple, but a cuple f students met him and shwed him arund.

I was surrunded, with all kinds f drinks handed t me. The kind f warmth that I felt at the very mment stayed fresh n my mind. Obviusly, ne mnth certainly culdn’t make me a gd runner, but I was full f cnfidence that I wuld imprve in the future. M: Dn’t wrry. The party begins at half past six. It nly takes us 10 minutes t arrive there by taxi. I prmise I’ll be ready within 5 minutes.

M: Hi, Cathy.
W: Hi, Tm. What’s wrng with yu? Yu lk pale.
M: Just a little stmachache.
W: Cme n. I think yu shuld ask the teacher fr leave and g t the dctr. Later I’ll send yu my class ntes.

M: Excuse me, I’m late. I have a reservatin here. My name is Teddy Williams.
W: It’s a pity. Yu planned t arrive at the htel at 3: 00 p. m. tday, but nw it’s already midnight, s we canceled yur reservatin.
第四段:
M: What d yu like t d n Mther’s Day? See a mvie?
W: I usually just stay hme and rest.
M: Why dn’t yu eat at a restaurant with yur kids?
W: Well, I’m busy all year being a mther. I deserve my rest n Mther’s Day.

W: A cmputer?
M: N, even better. A dg
W: That’s a bad idea. Lk utside. It’s snwing. D yu think she wants t walk a dg in the snw?

W: Hell! Thanks fr meeting me here tday. This space seems perfect fr yur new ffice needs, desn’t it?
M: It des lk great. What can yu tell me abut it?
W: Well, the walls have all been recently painted. There are tw separate bathrms, ne fr men and the ther fr wmen. The main area is 300 square feet, and the private ffice is abut 20 square feet.
M: Well, that des match what we’re lking fr, but my main cncern is the rent.
W: 1, 000 dllars per mnth.

W: What’s wrng? Yu dn’t lk very happy.
M: Oh, I have t write a paper abut the mst imprtant inventin ever made. It’s fr my histry class.
W: That’s nt t hard. There are lts f gd inventins
M: Yeah, but it’s due tmrrw.
W: Well, what inventin are yu ging t write abut?
M: Hmm, the cmputer, I guess.
W: Hmm. Isn’t everybdy ging t write abut that? Maybe yu shuld chse smething lder, like clcks r umbrellas.
M: N, I can’t. I dn’t knw anything abut them, and I dn’t have much time t d research.
W: OK. Well, I’m sure yu’ll cme up with smething gd.
M: Hey! What d yu think is the mst imprtant inventin ever?
W: Me? Let’s see, uh, chclate!

M: Hw lng did yu live in the States?
W: We were there fr tw years, in New Yrk. We had a wnderful time there. What we liked best was that we culd wrk and yet still lead a nrmal life. I mean, the shps are pen till ten ’clck, such as fd shps, chemists. And sme supermarkets are pen 24 hurs a day. Mst shps dn’t pen as early as in England. They dn’t pen until abut 10: 00 in the mrning.
M: Did yu make many friends?
W: Well, that’s what’s interesting. We made mre friends in ur tw years there than we have after tw years f living back here in Lndn. I think Americans are mre pen. They speak their minds directly, nt like the British, wh might think ne thing and say anther.

W: Yeah, the traffic was terrible and the rain, it tk me ages t get here. I’ll just put my umbrella in the crner here, shall I? Anyway, I’m really srry I’m late.
M: Well, I’m glad yu gt here in the end. Nw we shuld prbably get ging as fast as we can, because I’ve gt anther interview at 12: 00. Why d yu want t wrk fr us?
W: Well, I’m a bit bred where I’m wrking at the mment, s I’d really like a change. Yur cmpany is bigger, and the salary’s better than the jb I’ve gt. Mst imprtantly, I like the unfixed wrking hurs, because I find it really hard t get up in the mrning!
M: And where d yu want t be in five years’ time?
W: Australia, I hpe! I dn’t want t leave my family in the lng term. I’m planning t stay here in Britain fr a year r tw, but t be hnest I really want t mve smewhere ht and sunny, like Mexic. But my mm wn’t let me g.

Bill Wales is a 23-year-ld student in his third year at Lndn University in Britain. His parents als live in Lndn, but he left hme when he was eighteen and has been n his wn ever since. He wrks full time during hlidays and takes all jbs at weekends n the campus t pay fr his tuitin and supprt himself. After his secnd year at university he had t stp his studies at Lndn fr a year in rder t earn enugh mney t take up his studying again. In the five years since he left hme he’s mved huse twice. The first place he gt was a rm rented frm a family with three yung nisy children. After he started ging t university he fund he culdn’t study at hme s he mved t anther place. He shared an apartment with tw ther students and paid fr his wn rm. This place was gd. But he was cnstantly shrt f mney, s when his landlrd raised the rent f his rm by 10 dllars tw mnths ag, he again decided he had t find a new place.
