Summer 2023 has beaten heat recrds wrldwide. On July 6, the average wrldwide temperature reached the highest n recrd.
Scientists are still trying t wrk ut all the reasns fr this summer’s histric heat. But ne thing is certain: it has a lt t d with human-caused climate (氣候) change.
Much f this summer’s heat is prbably related t Earth’s ceans, experts say. Oceans wrldwide have been warming fr decades(十年), largely because f the greenhuse gases prduced by humans. The warm ceans can’t take in as much heat frm the atmsphere(大氣層). This leaves mre heat in the air, leading t warmer summer weather.
El Ni? may als have helped turn up the heat this summer. El Nif happens naturally every several years. It warms the waters f the trpical(熱帶的)Pacific. But Earth’s new perid f El Ni? nly began in June and wn’t be at its strngest fr mnths. S it’s t early t say hw much El Ni? has added t the ht weather this summer, researchers say.
Anther pssible reasn fr the high temperatures is the heat waves. Heat waves happen when pwerful winds flw mre slwly thrugh Earth’s atmsphere. This can cause ht pckets f air t stay ver the same places fr days r weeks at a time.
One recent study shwed that human-caused climate change is making heat waves mre cmmn and mre serius. Researchers made cmputer mdels f the wrld with and withut climate change. Then, they cmpared hw ften heat waves wuld happen in each case. The mdels shwed that heat waves are nw expected abut nce every ten years in Eurpe and Nrth America, but they wuld be almst impssible withut climate change.
It’s t early t wrk ut the cst f all that unusual weather. But hundreds f deaths have been reprted arund the wrld. And the great need fr air cnditining has heightened peple’s wrry abut pwer shrtages. Thse prblems will nly becme mre serius as climate change creates mre ht summers like this ne.
39. Oceans wrldwide have been warming fr decades largely because f_______.
A. the new perid f El Nii
B. human-prduced greenhuse gases
C. the strng waves f the trpical Pacific
D. pwerful winds thrugh Earth’s atmsphere
40. What can we learn frm the passage?

B. The ht weather in July was mainly caused by El Nii.
C. Climate change may lead t strnger heat waves.
D. Peple are well-prepared fr htter summers.
41. What is the passage mainly abut?
A. Wrries abut the greenhuse effect.
B. Reasns behind the heat this summer.
C. Influences f the ht weather this summer.

When smene has a sharply different viewpint frm ur wn, we naturally chse tw cmmn ways, either aviding a cnversatin with that persn r trying t cnvince(說服)them that they are wrng. Research shws there is anther way: using receptive (接納性的) language, shwing that we are truly interested in a new pint f view.
Many f us try t avid disputed(有爭議的)discussins. We prefer t talk with smene with similar pinins. This happens because we usually think that talking t smene wh has disagreements will be mre unpleasant than it actually is. When we d have t talk with peple hlding different views, we typically try t cnvince them t give up their belief because we think we are right and try t “win” the argument. And the ther side is likely t think the same way, which leads t even mre difficult prblems t wrk thrugh.
A mre effective methd is being cnversatinally receptive. Research shws that when we appear receptive t thers’ different views, ur arguments sund mre cnvincing. Receptive language can als make thse with whm we disagree mre receptive in return. It makes us mre likable, and thers mre interested in partnering with us.
Researchers suggested three tips that can help us imprve cnversatinal receptiveness in even the mst heated disagreements.
Recgnize (承認(rèn))the ther persn’s pint f view. Say “I understand that ….” r “I believe what yu’re saying is ….” t shw that yu take an active part in the cnversatin and find value and even trust in their pints.
Hedge yur statements. When we talk, we usually hld the pinin that we shuld be strng and cnfident and express ur views in a direct, frceful way. But if we shw that we are nt s sure abut ur belief, ur views will be likely t be better received.
Express yur arguments in an acceptable way. Yu might say, “Let’s cnsider the pssible benefits f having fewer peple wrking n the prject” rather than “We shuld nt add mre peple t the prject.” The secnd sentence sunds unpleasant, shwing that the speaker is nt pen t the pssibility f further discussin.
By fllwing these tips in ur cmmunicatin, we’ll be mre likely t have an effective cnversatin and bridge the differences.
42. What is Paragraph 2 mainly abut?
A. Why peple use tw cmmn ways when facing disagreements.
B. Hw peple cmmunicate t deal with difficult prblems.
C. Hw peple cnvince thers t give up their belief.
D. Why peple dislike thse with different pinins.
43. Accrding t the passage, being cnversatinally receptive can lead t_______
A. prductive cmmunicatin B. creative statements
C. increased cnfidence D. divided pinins
44. The wrds “hedge yur statements” in Paragraph 6 prbably mean “_______”
A. explain yur reasns clearly
B. raise yur questins plitely
C. vice yur ideas less frcefully
D. express yur excuses mre directly
45. What is the writer’s main purpse in writing this passage?
A. T stress the imprtance f prductive cmmunicatin.
B. T intrduce a better way t deal with disagreements.
C. T explain the reasns fr using receptive language.
D. T prvide three effective tips t win an argument.

The Zhngshan Eye Center at the Sun Yat-sen University has achieved a milestne in the field f eye surgery (手術(shù)). Dctrs there cmpleted the wrld’s first remte(遠(yuǎn)程的), micrn (納米的) peratin n animals by using an independently develped 5G rbt. The peratin, which tk place n June 23 at the center in Guangzhu, was dne by a medical team perating the rbt frm the Zhngshan Eye Center in Haiku.
The main part f the rbt is a special arm that makes accurate (精準(zhǔn)的)remte cntrl pssible. When it cmes t treating eye prblems, the cmmn way is t put medicine directly int the eye area which needs treatment. But dctrs’ hands shake naturally, making it difficult t be very accurate. The rbt can cpy tasks usually dne by hand, and it perfrms them steadily(穩(wěn)定地)and accurately.
Anther advantage is that even yung dctrs can perfrm eye surgery with 5G rbt’s help. Accrding t Prfessr Lin, the leader f the medical team, becming a skilled eye dctr takes at least 10 years f practice. Hwever, with the help f the rbt, yung dctrs can achieve a high level f accuracy cmparable t experienced dctrs.
The third imprtant pint is that using 5G makes it pssible fr dctrs t treat patients far away.
Eye dctrs can get clear and timely pictures, which makes remte peratins dependable.
Sill, it’s imprtant t remember that while this technlgy is prmising, mre research and tests are needed t make sure it’s safe and wrks well fr patients. “If everything ges well, 5G remte micrn eye surgery will be available t humans within half a year, “Lin said.
