I used to fancy myself a pretty good vacationer. But on my family's recent week-long trip to Mexico our first real getaway since the pandemic began—I got mixed up.
The huge difference between the expectations and the realities of travel hit me a few hours after we landed in Cabo SanLucas, Mexico. Driving our rental car to Walmart to buy groceries, we found ourselves stuck in stand-still traffic for over two hours. I comforted myself with the thought that once we arrived, my vacation self would emerge: relaxed, flexible and ready for a surfing followed by a margarita(瑪格麗塔酒) on the beach—while wearing one of several sundresses that had been gathering dust in my closet since 2020.
Readers, I did not.
First, I was defeated by what I will well refer to as “traveler's stomach.” Then, I was scared out of surfing by waves that seemed too messy and powerful for my skills. A chilly fog kept me from unrolling the sundresses I'd carefully packed, and I ended up wrapped in the same sweat-shirt that I wore on the airplane. All seemed ruined.
During the episode, I nearly drove myself crazy by asking constantly, “How can I make this better'? Can I find a different route in the traffic?” But it was just about acceptance: getting into the moment, accepting what it is, and trusting—trusting this may not be the best moment of the vacation, but there can still be good moments of the vacation.
Indeed, I noticed a shift in my mood. At some stage I did drink a margarita. Eventually, I had an enjoyable afternoon of surfing in the sun. But when I fondly remember this vacation now, I more often return to curling up on the hotel couch with my husband, watching “Stranger Things” in sweats; or sitting sand-caked on the beach watching our daughter digging with a local girl. In those small moments, I was simply present. That's what vacation is all about.
4. How did the author feel on her way to Walmart?
A. Relaxed and expectant. B. Upset but hopeful.
C. Disappointed and defeated. D. Delighted but concerned.
5. What prevented the author from wearing the sundress?
A. Sharp stomachache. B. Huge waves.
C. Cold weather. D. Favored sweat-shirts.
6 What can we learn about the author as the vacation went on?
A. She preferred to stay in the hotel.
B. She sought for better enjoyments.
C. She achieved the goals as scheduled.
D. She embraced the imperfect moments.
7. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To share reflections on a trip.
B. To provide advice on a getaway.
C. To promote tourism in Mexico.
D. To inform challenges of a vacation.

US astronaut Mae Jemison was only a little girl back in the 1960s. But she was old enough to know there was something strange with the Apollo astronauts as she watched them go into space on TV: They were all men-no women could be seen.
“That was the most absurd thing in the world,” Jemison, now an astronaut herself, once told The Atantic.“I just though, would the aliens actually think this is all there is to humanity”.
Fortunately, the past five decades have seen the world becoming a less “absurd” place. From NASA’s first astronaut class in 1959, which was all-male, to its 2013 class, in which half of all eight members were women, we can see how things are changing.
And on March 29,another history was about to be made when an all-female team-Anne McClain and Christina Koch - was scheduled to make an “all-women spacewalk” since all previous spacewalks were done with at least one male astronaut. But that plan was eventually can celled, due to “spacesuit availability”,which means NASA doesn’t have two suits that fit women.
The world is still pretty “absurd” after all.
In fact, tests have long proved that women are not at all less competent than men when it comes to space tasks. But apparently, test results are not enough to fight off the world’s long-existing biases against women.According to Atlas Obscura magazine, female astronauts were sometimes asked sexist questions during news conferences - examples include how they would live for a week without makeup, or how they could leave their children behind to go on space missions - when male astronauts were never bothered by such questions.
Hopefully - give it another few decades - we’ll be able to see a world that’s fully grown out of its absurdity in terms of gender equality. And hopefully, when aliens do come visit one of our space stations, they’ll see humanity the way it should be.
8. Which of the following descriptions fits Mae Jemison?
A. When she was young in 1960s, she knew nothing of the Apollo astronauts.
B. She believed that the aliens thought there was no woman on earth.
C. She found it unfair to see all the Apollo astronauts were men.
D. She wanted to be one of the Apollo astronauts.
9. What happened in NASA according to paragraph 4?
A. The astronauts class which were male became all female in 2013.
B. An all-female team made “all women spacewalk ”plan come true.
C. “All women spacewalk” plan was canceled because of astronauts’ability.
D. The shortage of space suits upset the “all women spacewalk”plan.
10. We can draw the conclusion from the tests that___
A. Women are more competent than men in space tasks.
B. Despite the results, the world’s long-existing biases against women still exists.
C. It is difficult for women not to use makeup for work.
D. Male astronauts never leave children behind to go on space missions.
11. What view did the author hold in the last paragraph?
A. When aliens visit our space stations, they will sce more human beings.
B. He believes that there will be no absurdity about the equality between men and women.
C. The world may become one full of humans and aliens.
D. Our space station will grow fully in another few decades.

Not long after the pandemic started, researchers began to document declines in child and adolescence mental health. The numbers are stark.
Hospital emergency room visits spiked for suspected suicide attempts among girls ages 12 to 17,according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. From February to March 2021, the number jumped by 51 percent compared with the same period during 2019.For boys, the increase was 4 percent Early research from MIT suggested the suicide rate for people aged 10 to 19 increased in 2020, compared with before the pandemic. More recently, CDC provisional data for 2021 showed an increase in the national rate from 2020 to 2021,especially for people ages 15 to 24.
In other research, the CDC found nearly 45 percent of high school students were so constantly sad or hopeless in 2021 that they were unable to engage in regular activities. Almost I in 5 seriously considered suicide, and 9 percent of the teenagers surveyed by the CDC tried to take their lives during the previous 12months. Family upheaval (變故), meanwhile, was widespread, particularly in the early pandemic: Nearly 30percent of students said an adult in their home had lost a job, and 24 percent said they went hungry for a lack of food.
There are no directly comparable per-pandemic studies, but Kathleen Ether. the CDC’s director of the division of adolescent and school health, said student well-being is significantly better for teens who report feeling connected to their schools - a problem for a population that, nationwide, was kept out of them for so long. There is 20 years of research showing that it not only has an impact on how young people do while they’re adolescents, but it has 20-year impacts on all kinds of measures of health, including emotional well-being, suicidality and substance (違禁藥物) use, she said.
It also left many children grieving. More than 230,000 U.S, students under 18 are believed to be mourning the ultimate loss: the death of a parent or primary caregiver in a pandemic-related loss, according to research by the CDC, Imperial College London, Harvard University, Oxford University and the University of Cape Town. In the United States, children of color were hit the hardest, another study found. It estimated that Black and Hispanic children had a higher rate of caregiver loss at nearly twice that of White children.
12. What does the underlined word “spiked” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Accounted. B. Boosted. C. Reduced. D. Accused.
13. What can we infer about the senior students in Paragraph 3?
A. Almost half of the students were too desperate to live normal lives.
B. About 20 percent of the students attempted a suicide previously.
C They became starved due to the unemployment of adults.
D. Family upheaval mainly contributes to their psychological disorders.
14. What do we know about Black and Hispanic children according to the text?
A. Over 230,000 Black and Hispanic students suffered from a family loss by the age of 18.
B. The US white people have so much racial discrimination against them.
C. They may enter the child welfare system after experiencing the death of a parent.
D. They were more likely to lose a caregiver than White, non-Hispanic children.
15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Entertainment. B. Health. C. Education. D. Science.

The chicken or the egg — which came first? It’s probably one of the most commonly cited paradoxes — a chicken hatches from an egg, so the egg came first, right?___16___The two ideas seem contradictory, and that’s exactly what a paradox is — a problem that seemingly has no definitive solution and can’t be logically solved.
___17___How can work be flexible but maintain structure? How can we switch off if we’re working from home? Two contrasting ideas could cause people stress, but what if we accept the contradiction and change the way we look at it? This is what some experts call the ‘paradox mindset’.
A paradox consists of two realities that exist at the same time — even though that seems impossible. ___18___ For example, embracing change may lead to bum-out, while embracing stability may lead to boredom. Some experts have found the acceptance of both realities and a willingness to embrace them can improve both creativity and productivity by allowing you to navigate a path through the contradictions. ___19___Consider Einstein. The theory of relativity was born out of the paradox that something could be moving and stationary at the same time, depending on perspective.
So, having a ‘paradox mindset’ and accepting the bigger picture may help you better understand problems. It could also make you happier knowing that contradictions exist. As a result, it may lead you to improving your productivity and creativity. ___20___
A. But then what laid the egg?
B. However, some say the chicken came first as it laid the egg.
C. If it worked for Einstein, maybe it could be good for you too.
D. And paradoxes don’t just exist in philosophical debates but also in our daily lives.
E. Studies have found that the application of a paradox can bring enormous benefits.
F. If you embrace just one of those realities and ignore the other, it can cause problems.
G. A 1996 study of geniuses found those thinkers spent time considering opposites and antitheses.

The emergency doctor stood at the foot of my husband’s hospital bed, holding the test results and a diagnosis--Leukemia. He said to my husband, “We’ll move you to the leukemia floor. You’ll be here at least a month.
A month! How were we going to struggle for a month? It was March. The end of a school year was approaching. My days with my high school students were limited. How could I prepare four weeks of lessor plans and hand them over to a substitute teacher? A month! Could we afford being in the hospital that long! Our insurance was good, but we’d still have to pay our part of the medical expenses. My meals wouldn’t be covered, and parking was so expensive! My head couldn’t do the math. I drove home, filled with countless worries.
The next morning, I packed the car with everything needed for our hospital stay and headed to school to see my students, Because we live in a small community, they would have heard about my husband’s diagnosis. I would assure them that my husband would be fine, and that I would be fine, too. I’d encourage them to be their best selves for the substitute -and for me- while I was on family leave.
When I entered my classroom, the chatter stopped. I could feel my students assess me as I walked to the front of the room, so I put on a smile and continued to my podium(講臺). Sitting on top was a green envelope with “Mrs. Sargent” written on it. I looked over the frames of my glasses at twenty-eight faces some smiling, some trying to resist. “What is this?” I asked. I picked up the envelope, and continued. “You guys…”

6. What can we learn about the author as the vacation went on?
B 5. C 6. D 7. A

根據(jù)第二段中“Driving our rental car to Walmart to buy groceries, we found ourselves stuck in stand-still traffic for over two hours. I comforted myself with the thought that once we arrived, my vacation self would emerge: relaxed, flexible and ready for a surfing followed by a margarita(瑪格麗塔酒) on the beach(我們開著租來的車去沃爾瑪買食品雜貨,發(fā)現(xiàn)自己被堵住了兩個多小時。我安慰自己,以為一旦我們到達(dá),我的假期就會自己浮現(xiàn)出來:放松、靈活,準(zhǔn)備好沖浪,然后在海灘上喝一杯瑪格麗塔酒)”可知,作者因為堵車心情沮喪,但同時對于即將到來的假期充滿了希望,故選擇B項。
【5題詳解】
細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第四段中“A chilly fog kept me from unrolling the sundresses I'd carefully packed, and I ended up wrapped in the same sweat-shirt that I wore on the airplane.(寒冷的霧氣使我無法展開我精心打包的背心裙,最后我穿著和在飛機(jī)上穿的一樣的汗衫。)”
根據(jù)第五段中“But it was just about acceptance: getting into the moment, accepting what it is, and trusting—trusting this may not be the best moment of the vacation, but there can still be good moments of the vacation.(但這只是一種接受:進(jìn)入當(dāng)下,接受現(xiàn)實,相信——相信——這可能不是假期中最好的時刻,但假期中仍有美好的時刻。)”
結(jié)合全文以及文章的第一段“I used to fancy myself a pretty good vacationer. But on my family's recent week-long trip to Mexico our first real getaway since the pandemic began—I got mixed up.(我以前以為自己是個很好的度假者。但在我的家人最近為期一周的墨西哥之行中,這是疫情爆發(fā)以來我們第一次真正的度假——我被搞糊涂了。)”可知,本文的主要目的在于分享自己在疫情爆發(fā)后的一次旅行中的感想,故選擇A項。

根據(jù)第一段第二句“But she was old enough to know there was something strange with the Apollo astronauts as she watched them go into space on TV: They were all men-no women could be seen.(但是,當(dāng)她在電視上看到阿波羅號的宇航員們進(jìn)入太空時,她知道他們有些奇怪:他們都是男人——沒有女人。)”可知梅·杰米森對阿波羅號的宇航員是有所了解的,并不是一無所知,故A項不符合題意;根據(jù)第二段的最后一句““I just though, would the aliens actually think this is all there is to humanity”.(“我只是在想,外星人真的會認(rèn)為這就是人類的全部嗎?”)”可知梅·杰米森認(rèn)為外星人不會相信地球上只有男性,故B選項不符合題意;根據(jù)第一段的最后一句“They were all men-no women could be seen.(他們都是男人——沒有女人)”及第二段““That was the most absurd thing in the world,” Jemison, now an astronaut herself, once told The Atantic.“I just though, would the aliens actually think this is all there is to humanity”.(“這是世界上最荒謬的事情,”杰米森曾經(jīng)告訴《大西洋月刊》(the atlantic),她自己現(xiàn)在也是一名宇航員。“我只是在想,外星人真的會認(rèn)為這就是人類的全部嗎?”)” 可知梅?杰米森認(rèn)為阿波羅號的宇航員們都是男性是非常不公平,故C選項符合題意;D選項的表述在文章中沒有表述和體現(xiàn)。綜上所述,故選C。
【9題詳解】
細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第四段的最后一句“But that plan was eventually can celled, due to “spacesuit availability”, which means NASA doesn’t have two suits that fit women.(但由于“航天服可用性”的原因,這一計劃最終無法實現(xiàn),這意味著美國宇航局沒有兩套適合女性的航天服。)”
根據(jù)文章整體結(jié)構(gòu)可知文章的倒數(shù)第二段是一個轉(zhuǎn)折段,也是文章表述的重點之所在,根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段的前兩句“In fact, tests have long proved that women are not at all less competent than men when it comes to space tasks. But apparently, test results are not enough to fight off the world’s long-existing biases against women.( 事實上,長期以來的測試證明,在太空任務(wù)方面,女性的能力并不遜于男性。但顯然,測試結(jié)果不足以消除世界上長期存在的對女性的偏見)”可推知雖然女性的能力并不遜于男性,但這不足以消除世界上長期存在的對女性的偏見。故選B。
【11題詳解】
推理判斷題。根據(jù)最后一段的第一句“Hopefully - give it another few decades - we’ll be able to see a world that’s fully grown out of its absurdity in terms of gender equality.( 希望是——再給它幾十年——我們能看到一個在性別平等方面完全擺脫荒謬的世界。)”

C. They became starved due to the unemployment of adults.

故填it。

When I entered my classroom the chatter stopped. “You guys…”

Paragraph 1: When I opened the envelope, coins and dollar bills fell out—fives, tens, twenties. At that moment, my throat tightened with emotion and I understood the meaning behind their excited faces. An overwhelming sense of pride from them washed over me. Should I take it? My brain was spinning fast. Seeing the money that the students raised, I couldn’t help but wonder another question: How had these kids collected so much money? I could even imagine the countless hours they had spent working odd jobs, determined to save every penny to help me. Therefore, deep within my heart, there was a firm voice,“I can’t take it”.
Paragraph 2: As an adult in the room, I felt guilty and unwilling to accent these teenagers’ hard-earned money; but I decided to accent it. I tightly held up the cash and a sense of mixed feeling choked my words. With tears of gratitude welling up in my eyes, I hugged each student tightly. More important than the envelope was the kindness in their hearts and the lesson they had taught themselves: how wonderful it feels to meet someone’s needs and to make a difference. Through their small act of kindness, these teenagers have shown me their growth and they are not ignorant children, but young individuals with kindness in their hearts.
