Eln Musk has ffered a prize f $100m fr the best carbn capture prpsal. I can save his cmmittee a lt f time. The mney shuld g t Peter Whlleben, whse bk The Hidden Life f Trees was the mst encuraging blckbuster (一鳴驚人) f 2015.Whlleben's idea is this: d nthing abut trees. Stp fiddling (亂作為) with them, thinking that we can deal with climate change better than nature. If we fiddle, ur Rmes will burn.
The Hidden Life f Trees argued that trees are scial. It shws that they can be ur saviurs, But it's terribly hard t let urselves be saved. We think we can be the authrs f ur salvatin (拯救). Of curse, there are things we culd and shuld be ding, but in terms f frestry practice, ften what's billed as part f the slutin is part f the prblem.
Anyne wh has planted a tree in their garden knws that it has a far-reaching effect — it makes yur garden cler in summer and warmer in winter. Frests cl by transpiring (蒸發(fā)). If there’s n water, there’s n cling. Drught can kill trees fast, but trees have many ways f dealing with it, and Whlleben sets them ut. As a species, we have survived many climatic changes by changing ur behaviur — and that's hw trees survive, t. Trees learn frm their past harms and prduce yunger nes prgrammed with thse lessns. They regulate their grwth by changing the rate at which they drip(點(diǎn)滴)-feed them with sugar slutin thrugh rt netwrks.
Deciduus(落葉的) frests in particular remve greenhuse gases effectively as lng as they live. Cut them dwn and burn them and yu're releasing carbn dixide nt just frm the wd, but als frm the frest flr. Deciduus trees are nt “harvest-ready” at 200 years: they are teenagers. We must interrgate cmfrting expressins such as “renewable energy”, and learn the real cst f ur tilet paper.
If we dn’t learn t d nthing abut trees, they will eventually be alne anyway — but withut us. Whlleben brilliantly and readably shws us hw urgent and hw hard it is t d nthing.
28. What des Whlleben suggest fr carbn capture?

The term “beer gggles” is said t have been cined by male Nrth American university students in the 1980s. Yet despite uncnfirmed evidence fr the phenmenn, the link between alchl intxicatin (醉酒) and physical attractin has nt been systematically studied.

On ne ccasin, bth men were given enugh cranberry juice t raise their bld alchl cncentratin t abut 0.08% - the legal limit fr driving in England — and n the ther ccasin, they bth received a nn-alchlic drink. After prviding attractiveness ratings fr the phts, they were asked t select which f these individuals they wuld mst like t interact with in a future experiment.
The research, published in the Jurnal f Studies n Alchl and Drugs, did nt find that alchl increased peple’s perceptins f thers' attractiveness. “But we did find that peple were mre likely t select t interact with the peple they perceived t be mst attractive after cnsuming alchl,” Bwdring said.
Indeed, drunk participants were 1.71 times mre likely t select ne f their tp fur attractive candidates t ptentially meet in a future study, cmpared with when they were sber (清醒的).
Given alchl’s effects n visual prcessing and cgnitive (認(rèn)知) functin, it was als pssible that the results wuld change as alchl levels rise in a persn's system, Bwdring said. T mve n, the field needs larger studies t see if they can be replicated (復(fù)制).
Assuming alchl des enhance the likelihd f a persn interacting with smene they find attractive. Bwdring believes her findings culd reveal ne prcess supprting the rewarding yet ptentially dangerus nature f alchl - including its impact n risky behaviur.
“If yu’re ging t cnsume alchl, I think it is wrth reflecting n hw can yu d it in a way that's safe and cnsistent with yur gals,” Bwdring said. “Peple may benefit by recgnizing that valued scial mtivatins and intentins change when drinking, in ways that may be appealing in the shrt term but pssibly harmful in the lng term.”

Healing Frm Negative Childhd Experiences
Relaxed Cntrl
It feels great t knw that ur lives are in cntrl: physically, emtinally, mentally, scially, spiritually, and temprally. An ptimistic attitude pushes us t take cnstructive actins in these areas and t enjy the resulting sense f cntrl. 36 There will mst certainly be circumstances that we simply can't cntrl. When this happens, relaxed cntrl says, “I’ll accept what is beynd my cntrl t change r fix right nw.”

We can feel cmpassin, rather than cruel judgments, twards urselves, wh haven't yet learned all that life has t teach us. 37
The Lng View f Suffering
Franklin taught, “That which hurts instructs.” 38 It can help us t realize, and take pride in knwing, that we can survive very difficult circumstances. Hard times can lead us t have cmpassin fr urselves and empathy (移情) fr thse wh are similarly suffering. All experience can be prfitable. Thugh mst tugh survivrs say that they wuld nt chse the suffering they endured, they als wuld nt trade the lessns gained frm their suffering.
Sense f Humr
Humr is the ability t amuse r be amused; t be playful; t find the fun in any situatin. 39 We can ntice the absurd (荒謬), the incngruities (不協(xié)調(diào)) f life and peple. T laugh at urselves kindly is t think, “I’m mre than my imperfectins and weaknesses.” Laughing alng with thers says, “We’re in this tgether; we're nt alne; it'll be kay.”
The healing attitudes are chsen. They help us heal and live a happier, mre satisfying life. 40 But they dn't fall in ur lap withut effrt. Like a beautiful plant, they are patiently, relentlessly cultivated. Lking back, the effrt will seem enrmusly wrthwhile.
A. Suffering is nt all bad.
B. Hwever, life is uneven.
C. Mentally step ut f yur negative experience.
D. Ding s prvides yu with chices as t hw t act.
E. We can laugh at the funny things we all d smetimes.
F. It is liberating t realize that they are within everyne's reach.
G. Cmpassin tward self and thers can indeed sften ur battles in life.

A few days later we received an email frm Brent Knll animal centre, saying we’d been shrtlisted. We were thrilled. They asked us t visit Charlie t be interviewed and t see if he liked us.
When we arrived we were taken t the staff rm. We didn't knw what t expect.
