My wife, Hannah, and I don’t usually keep houseplants. Anything in pots gets either overwatered or underwatered, but after my diagnosis (診斷) with brain cancer, I loved the idea of having something green around.

A friend gave me what he said was a lucky bamboo plant in a deep-green bowl. We placed the plant in the living room and I told Hannah I wanted to care for it myself. When it didn’t immediately turn yellow or lose leaves, I was pleasantly surprised. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment when I sometimes felt useless. As a family physician, I was used to offering care, not receiving it.

Since my diagnosis, I had to rely on help from other people. Watering the plant, small act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity.

After I recovered from the operation and returned to work, I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it had nearly doubled in height. Both the tree and I were thriving (茁壯成長(zhǎng)). Then, without any reason, it began to show signs of stress. Its leaves kept browning and dropping to the floor. Hannah reminded me that we’d seen houseplants die before, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that the plant had become a symbol of my health. I grew increasingly depressed and fearful.

Looking back, I realized I had wrongly connected my caring of the plant—something I could manage—with my own survival—something I couldn’t. Knowing I couldn’t control my fate (命運(yùn)), my anxiety actually lessened. I began to search online to figure out how to care for my plant. Following the instructions, I transplanted the tree to a larger pot, giving it room to grow. When it was back in the sunny window, we both began to thrive again. Whenever I look at the plant in its new pot, I make a point to think of those who have cared for and supported me.

24.Why was the author surprised about the plant’s good condition?

A.Because of his recent diagnosis. B.Because of his worsening health.

C.Because of his previous failures. D.Because of his unusual good luck.

25.What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 imply?

A.The author considered himself useless. B.The author felt connected to the plant.

C.The author desired to provide care. D.The author hoped to return to work.

26.Why was the author fearful?

A.Because the plant’s poor health might indicate his death.

B.Because the stress of work would harm his well-being.

C.Because he may have to rely on others from then on.

D.Because he would experience a rather risky operation.

27.How did the author lessen his anxiety?

A.By searching plant knowledge online. B.By thinking of those who supported him.

C.By knowing he will survive in the end. D.By accepting his unavoidable limitation.

C

Amy, a day old, was abandoned at a police station in Seoul. Her birth parents couldn’t afford to give Amy the appropriate healthcare then. She spent her first three months in an orphanage before she was adopted. “I always thought, why should I be more thankful to my adoptive parents than the next person?” she says.

In 2011, Amy reconnected with her birth mother in South Korea, her adoptive mum by her side. “My Korean mother took my American mother’s hands in hers and said with tears, ‘Thank you.’ After that, my whole world changed,” Amy says. At the time, she was working in the e-commerce sector and struggling with anxiety, depression and an eating disorder. Reconnecting with her birth family, however made her feel like the luckiest person in the world and she wanted to actively share her good fortune. That year, she quit her job and co-founded the Global Gratitude Alliance, which partners with grassroots organizations to create community-led solutions or social and economic change.

Since then, a reflexive sense of thankfulness has become Amy’s frame of reference for work, relationships and daily life in general. She tried to rethink her world view, appreciate the little things and make connections with others. For Amy, the attitude shift helped her overcome health issues—she didn’t need the drugs any more after she returned from Korea.

Those positive effects inspired Amy to share the experience with others. Through a partnership with a home for orphaned children in Nepal, the Global Gratitude Alliance provided teachers with workshops that concluded with a ceremony of giving thanks. The participants used those techniques to help their students and community after the destructive earthquake of 2015. Children from the school recently visited a local seniors’ home to build relationships with the residents there. “Gratitude creates a cycle of giving and receiving,” Amy says.

As the West dries out and heats up, wildfires get bigger and more destructive, officials tasked with preventing and battling the fires could soon have a new thing to add to their set of tools. The high tech help could come from an area not normally associated with fighting wild fires: artificial intelligence(AI).

Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company, based in Jefferson County, has decades of experience of managing satellites, exploring space and providing information for the US military. By generating more timely information about on-the ground conditions and running computer programs to process huge amounts of data,Lockheed Martin representatives say they can map the extent(范圍)of a fire in minutes rather than the hours it can take now They say the AI that the company has applied to military use can improve predictions about a fires direction and speed.

“The situation that wildland firefighters work in is a dynamic environment with multiple activities and responsibilities,”said Dan Lordan, senior manager at Lockheed Martin’s Artificial Intelligence Center. Lockheed Martin aims to use its technology to reduce the time it takes to gather information and make decisions about wildfires. The quicker they can react, the faster they can control the fire and protect people’s properties and lives.

Lockheed is working with a software company to build a digital model of a wildfire based on an area’s topography(地形)condition of the plants wind and weather to help forecast where and how it will burn. After the 2020 Cameron Peak fire Colorado’s largest wildfire the company used the information about the fire, examined the more timely satellite data on fire conditions, and generated a model that was similar to the actual fire’s movement.

“Applying AI to fighting wildfires isn’t about taking people out of the field.” Lockheed Martin spokesman said.“Somebody will always be there, but people currently in the field are surrounded by so much data that they can’t sort through it fast enough. That’s where AI can help.”

32.What do we know about Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company?

A.It has good experience in fighting fires.

B.It works on the follow-up to firefighting.

C.It applied AI to its service for the first time

D.It has played positive roles in various fields.

A.Building models. B.Processing more data.

C.Replacing firefighters. D.Making final decisions.

35.Which is he most suitable title for the text?

A.AI is helping people fight wildfires

B.AI can fight wildfires automatically

C.AI is used to fight Colorado’s wildfires

D.AI replaces firemen in fighting wildfires

Jayce began noticing when he was in kindergarten that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands while he had one. Due to his young age, Jayce was encouraged that he was just like an angel with one wing folded to prepare for something.

It started when one boy laughed at him. From that day, little Jayce became sad. He returned home with questions. “Why am I different? Why me? Why?” He cried and asked his mother Lewis. Seeing Jayce was mad, the poor mother felt it a huge dagger (匕首) to her heart. What made her more sorrowful was that she didn’t know what to do at that point and how to give answers to her son’s questions which she could never find out herself. The white lie burst just like bubbles that day.

A few weeks later, Lewis turned on the TV and saw a news story where she was shocked to find out the answer. It was Trashaun, an eighth grader, who had a similar disability but led a brilliant life, that displayed positive energy from head to toe. The 14-year-old sunny boy performed his slam dunks(灌籃) on the TV, who had been a hit on the Internet. However, like Jayce, he had missed most of his left arm since his childhood! Lewis called her son Jayce in. The poor little boy got spellbound, watching dunks after dunks.

At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce. He saw Trashaun as a tough role model and Lewis felt quite happy. But little did she know that a relative had already contacted Trashaun, inviting him to have a meeting with Jayce to help rebuild Jayce’s confidence.

21.A????22.B???2?3.D
根據(jù)“From?Scratch”中的“Adventurous?Anthony?Bourdainesque?eaters?and?readers?will?appreciate?David?Moscow’s?every?word?as?he?travels?far?(bye,?Sea?of?Sardinia)?and?near?(hello,?Texas?plains)?to?lean?from?farmer,?hunters,?fisherfolk?and?scientists?about?how?our?food?reaches?our?plates.(喜歡冒險(xiǎn)的安東尼·波登式的食客和讀者會(huì)欣賞David? 故選A。
Life?of?an?Ordinary?Man”,價(jià)格為“Price:?Hardcover:?$19.95;?Paperback:?$15.95(價(jià)格:精裝:19.95美元;平裝:15.95美元)”以及“Cook?as?You?Are”,價(jià)格為“Price:?Hardcover:?$12.95;?Paperback:?$10.95(價(jià)格:精裝:12.95美元;平裝:10.95美元)”。 再根據(jù)文章倒數(shù)第二段“Buy?3?or?more?books?and?save?S5!(買3本或更多的書,節(jié)省5美元!)”。
根據(jù)“The?Boy?and?the?Dog”部分中的“In?this?Japanese?bestseller?translated?to?English?and?French,?a?dog?displaced?by?the?2011?tornado,?enters?the?lives?of?the?six?different?people?who?take?him?in?during?his?five-year?adventure?to?return?to?his?owner.(在這本被翻譯成英語(yǔ)和法語(yǔ)的日本暢銷書中,一只在2011年龍卷風(fēng)中流離失所的狗進(jìn)入了六個(gè)不同的人的生活,在他五年的冒險(xiǎn)中,他回到了他的主人身邊。)”
24.C????25.C????26.A????27.D
根據(jù)文章第一段“My?wife,?Hannah,?and?I?don’t?usually?keep?houseplants.?Anything?in?pots?gets?either?overwatered?or?underwatered,?but?after?my?diagnosis?(診斷)?with?brain?cancer,?I?loved?the?idea?of?having?something?green?around.?(我妻子漢娜和我通常不養(yǎng)室內(nèi)植物?;ㄅ枥锏娜魏螙|西要么澆水過(guò)多,要么澆水不足,但在我被診斷出患有腦癌之后,我喜歡周圍有一些綠色的東西。)”可知,作者和妻子每次養(yǎng)室內(nèi)植物都會(huì)失敗;再根據(jù)第二段“When?it?didn’t?immediately?turn?yellow?or?lose?leaves,?I?was?pleasantly?surprised.?(當(dāng)它沒(méi)有立即變黃或落葉時(shí),我感到驚喜。)”
根據(jù)文章第二段“As?a?family?physician,?I?was?used?to?offering?care,?not?receiving?it.?(作為一名家庭醫(yī)生,我習(xí)慣于提供照顧,而不是接受照顧。)” 而根據(jù)劃線句子前一句“Since?my?diagnosis,?I?had?to?rely?on?help?from?other?people.?(自從我被確診后,我不得不依靠別人的幫助。)”
根據(jù)文章第四段“Hannah?reminded?me?that?we’d?seen?houseplants?die?before,?but?I?couldn’t?shake?the?feeling?that?the?plant?had?become?a?symbol?of?my?health.?I?grew?increasingly?depressed?and?fearful.?(漢娜提醒我,我們以前見(jiàn)過(guò)室內(nèi)植物死去,但我無(wú)法擺脫這種感覺(jué),那棵植物已經(jīng)成為我健康的象征。 和最后一段“Looking?back,?I?realized?I?had?wrongly?connected?my?caring?of?the?plant—something?I?could?manage—with?my?own?survival—something?I?couldn’t.??Knowing?I?couldn’t?control?my?fate?(命運(yùn)),?my?anxiety?actually?lessened.?(回想起來(lái),我意識(shí)到我錯(cuò)誤地把我對(duì)植物的照顧——這是我能做到的——和我自己的生存聯(lián)系起來(lái)——這是我不能做到的。)” 故選A。
根據(jù)文章最后一段“Looking?back,?I?realized?I?had?wrongly?connected?my?caring?of?the?plant—something?I?could?manage—with?my?own?survival—something?I?couldn’t.?Knowing?I?couldn’t?control?my?fate?(命運(yùn)),?my?anxiety?actually?lessened.?(回想起來(lái),我意識(shí)到我錯(cuò)誤地把我對(duì)植物的照顧——這是我能做到的——和我自己的生存聯(lián)系起來(lái)——這是我不能做到的。
28.A????29.B????30.D????31.D
根據(jù)第二段的句子“In?2011,?Amy?reconnected?with?her?birth?mother?in?South?Korea,?her?adoptive?mum?by?her?side.(2011年,艾米與她在韓國(guó)的生母重新聯(lián)系,她的養(yǎng)母就在她身邊)”和下一句中的“My?Korean?mother?took?my?American?mother’s?hands?in?hers?and?said?with?tears,?‘Thank?you.’?(我的韓國(guó)母親握住我的美國(guó)母親的手,流著淚說(shuō):‘謝謝你?!笨芍?,艾米是由一對(duì)美國(guó)夫婦撫養(yǎng)長(zhǎng)大的。故選A項(xiàng)。
根據(jù)第二段的句子“Reconnecting?with?her?birth?family,?however?made?her?feel?like?the?luckiest?person?in?the?world?and?she?wanted?to?actively?share?her?good?fortune.?That?year,?she?quit?her?job?and?co-founded?the?Global?Gratitude?Alliance,?which?partners?with?grassroots?organizations?to?create?community-led?solutions?or?social?and?economic?change.(然而,與親生家庭的重新聯(lián)系讓她覺(jué)得自己是世界上最幸運(yùn)的人,她想積極地分享她的好運(yùn)。那一年,她辭掉了工作,共同創(chuàng)立了全球感恩聯(lián)盟,該聯(lián)盟與草根組織合作,創(chuàng)造社區(qū)主導(dǎo)的解決方案或社會(huì)和經(jīng)濟(jì)變革)”和第三段“Since?then,?a?reflexive?sense?of?thankfulness?has?become?Amy’s?frame?of?reference?for?work,?relationships?and?daily?life?in?general.?She?tried?to?rethink?her?world?view,?appreciate?the?little?things?and?make?connections?with?others.?For?Amy,?the?attitude?shift?helped?her?overcome?health?issues?——?she?didn’t?need?the?drugs?any?more?after?she?returned?from?
根據(jù)第四段的句子“Through?a?partnership?with?a?home?for?orphaned?children?in?Nepal,?the?Global?Gratitude?Alliance?provided?teachers?with?workshops?that?concluded?with?a?ceremony?of?giving?thanks.?The?participants?used?those?techniques?to?help?their?students?and?community?after?the?destructive?earthquake?of?2015.(通過(guò)與尼泊爾一家孤兒之家的合作,全球感恩聯(lián)盟為教師們舉辦了講習(xí)班,最后舉行了感恩儀式。
32.D????33.C????34.B????35.A

A.?control控制;B.?organize組織;C.?represent代表;D.?serve服務(wù)。根據(jù)上文“I?can?drive?the?big?red?trucks”可知,現(xiàn)在作者可以開(kāi)紅色的消防車為社區(qū)服務(wù)了。

56.a(chǎn)n???57.left????58.a(chǎn)gainst????59.who????60.wonderful????61.a(chǎn)re????62.rules????63.especially????64.or????65.to?enjoy
故填an。
fight?against與……作斗爭(zhēng)。故填against。
There?be句型中be動(dòng)詞的單復(fù)數(shù)由后面的名詞決定,因此根據(jù)a?great?number?of?shorter?paths可知,謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞應(yīng)該用復(fù)數(shù)。故填are。
故填or。
way?to?do做某件事的方法。故填to?enjoy。
就近原則體現(xiàn)在There?be?
There?be?
There?are?some?apples?in?the?bowl.
There?is?a?ruler,?two?pens?and?five?books?in?the?school?bag.
本句中的There?be句型中be動(dòng)詞應(yīng)與a?great?number?of?shorter?paths保持一致,因此謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞應(yīng)該用復(fù)數(shù)。故填are。
