Kyra Peralte thought keeping a diary during the pandemic (流行病) might help her sort out her feelings. In April 2020, the mother of two in Montclair, New Jersey, now 46, started writing about the challenges of work, marriage and motherhood during a global crisis. She invited women from near and far to fill the notebook with their own pandemic tales. She named the project The Traveling Diary.
Peralte created a website for people to add their names to the queue. Each person gets to keep the diary for three days and fill as many pages as she wishes. Then she is responsible for mailing it to the next person, whose address Peralte provides. So far, more than 2, 000 women from 30 countries have joined in.
The diary reached Colleen Martin in Florham Park, New Jersey, in November 2020. “I had just recently lost my brother. By the time I actually got it and wrote in it, it was much more of a relief,” she says. Adding to the diary, she says, helped her look for meaning and “the growth and development that occurs in terrible times.”
Martin shipped off the diary to the next person, and Dior Sarr, 35, received it at her home in Toronto just before the new year. “I wrote about my ambitions(抱負), my goals and how I wanted to step into the new year, ” she says, “It felt meaningful to pass on something so personal. It felt like these were women that I had known even though I didn’t know them at all.”
Like many of the women who wrote in her diary, Peralte feels a strong bond with the people who filled its pages, none of whom she would have otherwise known. Her idea, Peralte says, has had a great effect on her and, she hopes, the other women who were part of it.
4. Why did Peralte start the project “The Traveling Diary”?
A. To become famous online.
B. To offer women an emotion outlet.
C. To meet more people on the Internet.
D. To popularize medical knowledge of pandemic.
5. What did Colleen Martin get from writing the diary?
A. Achieving her goals.
B. Receiving timely help.
C. Promoting personal growth.
D. Improving her writing skills.
6. What does the underlined word“bond” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Connection. B. Competition.
C. Impression. D. Need.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Power of Unity
B. Warmth in a Global Crisis
C. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Diary
D. Friendship on the Internet

根據(jù)第一段中的“Kyra Peralte thought keeping a diary during the pandemic (流行病) might help her sort out her feelings.(凱拉·佩拉特認為在疫情期間寫日記(流行病)可能有助于她理清自己的情緒。)”以及“She invited women from near and far to fill the notebook with their own pandemic tales. .She named the project The Traveling Diary.(她邀請遠近各地的婦女在筆記本上寫下她們自己的流行病故事。她把這個項目命名為“旅行日記”。)”可知,Kyra Peralte認為寫日記能夠幫助梳理自己的感情,所以邀請了附近的婦女寫下自己流行病期間的故事,這個項目被命名為“旅行日記”由此可知,Peralte創(chuàng)建“旅行日記”的目的是給女性提供一個情感出口。故選B項。
【5題詳解】
細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第三段中的“Adding to the diary, she says, helped her look for meaning and “the growth and development that occurs in terrible times.”(她說,在日記中添加的內容幫助她尋找意義和“在糟糕時期發(fā)生的成長和發(fā)展”。)”
根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段中的“It felt like these were women that I had known even though I didn’t know them at all.(我感覺這些女人是我認識的,盡管我根本不認識她們。)”可知,Martin認為即使自己不認識這些女性,但自己好像早就認識他們一樣,再結合根據(jù)劃線單詞后的“…with the people who filled its pages, none of whom she would have otherwise known.(與那些寫滿了頁面的人……,否則她都不認識這些人。)” 故選A項。
根據(jù)第一段中的“She invited women from near and far to fill the notebook with their own pandemic tales. She named the project The Traveling Diary. (她邀請遠近各地的婦女在筆記本上寫下她們自己的流行病期間的故事。她把這個項目命名為“旅行日記”。)”以及下文中對參與這一活動的女性的感觸介紹可知,本文主要講述了疫情期間Peralte發(fā)起了“旅行日記”的活動,吸引了很多的女性加入,所以本文的標題為“旅行日記中的姐妹情誼”概括了全文,與文章主題吻合。故選C項。

Hundreds of millions of birds die every year from crashing into windows, one of the biggest sources of human-caused bird deaths — far greater than wind turbines (渦輪) and airplane strikes put together. In an attempt to help birds see the windows before it’s too late, people may stick decals (貼紙) or coloured films on their windows — often on the indoor side. But a recent study challenges the effectiveness of this practice.
“Putting these window films on the inside really is not giving you the benefit that you would want for protecting the birds,” says John P. Swaddle, lead author of the new study.
To test the films’ effectiveness, Swaddle and his colleagues applied one of two commercially available (可獲得的) films to either inside or outside window surfaces. One film reflected shorter light wavelengths that humans cannot see, and the other reflected longer wavelengths (many birds can see both). The researchers also fixed super-fine nets in front of the windows to keep birds from actually hitting the glass. Both films helped to prevent bird strikes by more than 35 percent when put on the outside surface, the study found — but films on the inside had no benefit at all.
“It’s some groundbreaking work about the differences of what can and can’t work in terms of preventing window strikes from birds,” says George Mason University biologist David Luther.
People usually find it much easier to put films or decals on the indoor side of a window, says Natalia Ocampo-Penuela, a conservation ecologist. For taller buildings, to apply something to the outside, “you need scaffolding (腳手架)...you need to clean the windows extra well for them to apply correctly, and they don’t last as long.”
Swaddle assumes that films placed on the inside don’t effectively stop the reflection of outside light. This might also be the case with decals, although those were not tested in this study, he says.
8. What’s the main killer for human-caused bird death?
A. Wind turbines. B. Air pollution.
C. Window strikes. D. Airplane crashes.
9. According to Swaddle’s test, which factor is significant in preventing bird strikes?
A. Types of films.
B. Availability of films.
C. Places to put films.
D. Wavelengths films reflected.
10. What is David Luther’s attitude towards the study?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive.
C. Unclear. D. Confused.
11. What’s paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. How long the films will last when put correctly.
B. What is needed to clean the windows completely.
C. How people apply films to the outside of buildings.
D. Why people choose to place films inside the window.
C 9. C 10. B 11. D

根據(jù)第一段“Hundreds of millions of birds die every year from crashing into windows, one of the biggest sources of human-caused bird deaths — far greater than wind turbines (渦輪) and airplane strikes put together.
根據(jù)第三段中“To test the films’ effectiveness, Swaddle and his colleagues applied one of two commercially available (可獲得的) films to either inside or outside window surfaces. One film reflected shorter light wavelengths that humans cannot see, and the other reflected longer wavelengths (many birds can see both). The researchers also fixed super-fine nets in front of the windows to keep birds from actually hitting the glass.
根據(jù)第四段“‘It’s some groundbreaking work about the differences of what can and can’t work in terms of preventing window strikes from birds,’ says George Mason University biologist David Luther.(喬治梅森大學的生物學家David Luther說:‘這是一項開創(chuàng)性的工作,研究了在防止鳥類撞擊窗戶方面,什么能起作用,什么不能起作用?!?”
根據(jù)第五段“People usually find it much easier to put films or decals on the indoor side of a window, says Natalia Ocampo-Penuela, a conservation ecologist. For taller buildings, to apply something to the outside, ‘you need scaffolding (腳手架)...you need to clean the windows extra well for them to apply correctly, and they don’t last as long.’ D選項“Why people choose to place films inside the window.(為什么人們選擇把膜貼在窗戶里面。)”

Officials at Northland Pines School District are working with a tech company called Spooky Action on a program to allow students to use the Internet through drones (無人機).
About 10 percent of Northland Pines students don’t have any Internet access at home, and as many as 40 percent have poor connection speeds which hardly meet the demands of home learning. District leaders have tried for more than ten years to close that gap, but there are no easy solutions. “We’re a district of about 500 square miles and getting Internet connect ion for every family is a challenge,” says Harlan Leusink, the director of technology for the district.
The program will use drones that are connected to a power source on the ground and that can stay in the air for weeks and even months. The drones will serve as flying cell towers. However, the purpose of designing drones had nothing to do with the education but it was related to disasters. “A hurricane comes in and blows down all your cell towers; it’s pretty easy to put up a flying cell tower,” Rahul Tiwari, Spooky Action’s CEO, says. “It’s not necessary to replace a cell tower. The idea is to quickly meet the Internet needs of a community without having to build a million cell towers everywhere.”
While the drones can stay in the air for more than a month, that’s not usually necessary when they provide the Internet for students. Tiwari says the drones will be active during peak (高峰) class and homework times and won’t be flying overnight.
Leusink says his district is looking at the drone service as a proof-of-concept for where and how they need to set up more permanent (永久的) devices (設備). If a drone in a certain area gives students good coverage in that area, he says the next step will be for the district to look for more permanent land-based solutions.
12. What problems does Northland Pines School District have?
A. It has poor Internet access and connection.
B. Internet access at home is impossible there.
C. It has difficulty developing its transport services.
D. Students there pay little attention to online learning.
13. Why were Spooky Action’s drones designed at first?
A. To offer daily supplies after disasters.
B. To replace cell towers in remote areas.
C. To improve the national educational standards.
D. To provide the Internet service during disasters.
14. What can we infer from what Rahul Tiwari says about drones?
A. They have closed the teaching gap.
B. They cannot meet students’ needs.
C. They don’t need to work all the time.
D. They will fly close to local cell towers.
15. What step will be taken for the district?
A. Developing new-type drones.
B. Further testing the drone services.
C Offering more wireless hotspots.
D. Building permanent equipment properly.
A 13. D 14. C 15. D

The Quality I Value Most
Good morning, everyone! Qualities will determine what you can achieve. The quality which I think is of the most importance is the spirit of craftsmanship.
As we all know, craftsmanship is mainly made up of perseverance, integrity, diligence and expertise. Take the clock restoration master, Wang Jin, for example. With skillful hands and a modest heart, Mr. Wang spent his whole life restoring clocks dating back to hundreds of years, which not only helps preserve traditional skills but also brings the clocks back to life. Most importantly, his innovation and unremitting devotion ensure that the art of clock repairing stands the test of time. Therefore, from my perspective, the spirit of craftsmanship, which includes devoting ourselves to work, sharpening our skills and overcoming difficulties with perseverance, is the necessary and significant quality for us human beings.
The spirit of craftsmanship is what has helped a great number of achievement makers, and it is well worth possessing.
Thank you for your attention.

Emily was busy testing her guitar when her older brother Chris knocked on her door. “Ready to go?” he asked. “Just a minute,” Emily answered. She picked up her guitar, placed it in her case, and walked out.
Even though she was on her way to performing at her first concert in New York City, she could hardly feel any excitement. All that was on her mind was her best friend, Anna. They walked all the way, and it was Anna’s encouragement that helped her gain much success. Just 24 hours ago, Anna went to Santiago, Chile, as her mother wanted to be a teacher at the university there. Emily said goodbye to Anna and was very sad. They promised to stay in touch.
So as Emily stepped on stage in a poor state, putting her fingers on the guitar strings (弦), she hardly heard the cheers from her friends and family in the crowd. She also paid little attention to the flash of Chris’s camera as he took pictures of her band. But as soon as the drummer (鼓手), signaled the beginning of the first song with the clicks of his drumsticks, Emily was pulled back to the present.
The first piece was just what Anna taught her a year ago. Although it took her a while to learn, once she was able to master it, a new world of music opened to her. However, this time when she began to play, she was totally at a loss.
Soon, it was time for the band to take a ten﹣minute break. As her band mates left the stage, they all cheered up for each other, satisfied with their performance. Jackson, the lead singer, approached Emily. He’d noticed something was wrong with her. “Everything okay?” he asked.
“Yeah, don’t worry. I’m fine,” she said to him.
His eyes expressed his concern, but he didn’t have much time to talk to her. He figured it could wait until after the concert. Emily was left alone.
注意:
1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應為 150個左右;

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Sitting on the seat, Emily pulled her phone out of her pocket. To her surprise, she noticed a text message from Anna. “Wishing you the best of luck tonight! You better make me proud,” it read. She smiled at the screen, with a wave of warmth surging through her. Figuring that Anna wouldn’t want her to be sad during her first performance in New York City, she felt a little ashamed for her performance just now. Immediately, she sprang to her feet, determined to try her best and perform well.
Emily stepped back on stage with renewed energy. This time, she smiled at Chris’s camera and waved to the audience, getting more cheers from strangers, friends and family. She joined in when Jackson sang the song, and he turned back to look at her, surprised and pleased. She performed so well that she herself couldn’t believe it. Emily thought the next time Anna was in town, she would give a performance just like this one and make her proud.
