On a hot summer day in 2017, 9-year-old Hayli Martenez set up a lemonade stand outside her home in Kankakee, Illinois. She thought it would be a great way to earn money for college. Hayli's lemonade stand was a success. In June 2019, a local newspaper wrote an article about her.
But the news coverage turned out to be bad for Hayli's business. Officials from the local health department soon demanded that she shut it down. They said Hayli needed a permit for her lemonade stand and that it didn't meet health code requirements. Although Hayli thought it was unfair to prevent a kid from selling lemonade in her front yard, she had no choice but to stop.
News of Hayli's shutdown spread and caught the attention of an official in the county government. Inspired by Hayli's story, he came up with a bill, which would make it easier for kids to run lemonade stands. He invited Hayli to speak in support of the bill to a committee of state senators(參議員)in March 2021.
Although Hayli was excited to get the chance to tell her story, she was worried about addressing the group of senators. She was jittery at first. Her voice started to shake and she talked too fast, running out of breath. But Hayli quickly gained confidence when she remembered who she was there to represent.
Hayli's speech was convincing, and the bill eventually passed. Last July, the bill came into law. Hayli's Law officially went into effect on January I of this year. It allows kids under 16 in Illinois to sell lemonade and other drinks without a permit. Hayli was back in business and sold her lemonade again this summer. Hayli hopes her experience and the law that was passed in her honor will encourage other young people not to let anyone stop their dreams.
24. What was the main cause of Hayli's stand being shut down?
A. The newspaper report. B. The stand's illegality.
C. The taste of lemonade. D. The lemonade stand's position.
25. What does the underlined word "jittery"in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Excited. B. Confused. C. Nervous. D. Curious.
26. What did Hayli regard the meeting with the senators as?
A. A trial for her own wrongdoing.
B. A battle against all the unfair laws.
C. An occasion to show her outstanding ability.
D. A chance to appeal for the benefit of children.
27. What does Hayli wish young people to learn from her story?
A. Being brave to realize their dreams.
B. Being independent of their parents.
C. Establishing a business at a young age.
D. Attaching importance to higher education.

Despite many public health campaigns to highlight various problems with sugary drinks, we drink them a lot. But, not everyone consumes them. Two new studies shed light on the fact that some of us easily fall victim to the harms of sugary drinks than others.
C Though sugary drinks are everywhere, some people find them harder to resist and the first study, conducted by professor Joshua McGreen at Flinders University, sought to understand why. For the research, 128 young adults of 17 to 25 completed a computer test evaluating their attitudes about soft drinks, measured against their soft drink consumption. The study showed that the more unconscious positive judgments individuals had of soft drink advertising, the more soft drink they consumed. It also found that a lack of inhibitory control, which is the cognitive process that allows us to control our desires — say, to buy a nice-tasting soft drink even though we know it's unhealthy — was also a factor in increased consumption.
A second study provides clues about who is more easily influenced by the marketing strategies. The study found that soft drink companies, like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, have multi-billion dollar advertising and marketing budgets aimed to "create, maintain and increase consumer demand around benefits related to happiness, social status etc." These campaigns are "increasingly being directed at disadvantaged groups", including children and adolescents generally.
Soft drinks, even "zero-sugar"ones, are typically high in calories, but of little nutritional benefit. Placing a tax on sweet drinks may be one strategy to reduce people's consumption. McGreen also suggests that people develop strong self-control of soft drink consumption. It's something he wants to research further.
28. What do the two new studies focus on?
A. The harm of sugary drinks. B. The popularity of sugary drinks.
C. The consumers of sugary drinks. D. The profit made by sugary drinks.
29. Who are most likely to buy sugary drinks according to McGreen?
A. Those who have a good impression of soft drinks.
B. Those who have a good spending habit.
C. Those who can control their desires well.
D. Those who have no interest in soft drink advertising.
30. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The warning against the consumption of soft drinks.
B. Plans to research into self-control of soft drink consumption.
C. The importance of sports stars in advertising soft drinks.
D. Suggestions on reducing the consumption of soft drinks.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards“zero-sugar”soft drinks?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Uncaring. D. Ambiguous.

Billionaire Sir Christopher Hohn expects the greatest "demand disruption(中斷)”for oil since the 1970s shock to cause an increase in renewable energy investment.
He said high oil prices are“a positive thing”for the climate as the energy crisis results in a "dramatic speed-up” in decarbonisation(碳減排). "The whole world should now be focused on seeking alternatives, whether they're renewables or hydrogen fuels. All of these things are far more economic."
He pointed to the recent boost of EU(歐盟)for renewable energy funding, as part of a plan to reduce imports of gas. Even as oil and gas companies obtain record profits from the high prices at present, Hohn said climate-focused investors will ultimately benefit from the energy price shock.
"The oil price increase leads to plans for accelerated decarbonisation,” said Hohn. "I personally believe that we'll have demand disruption as we had in the 70s, and that there will be a dramatic acceleration in decarbonisation. I actually view it as a positive thing."
Hohn has pressured companies to give shareholders a vote on their climate plans. Spanish airport operator Aena and aircraft manufacturer Airbus improved their emissions(排放)tar-gets as a result. Hohn has also pushed for stricter regulation on corporate climate promises. "Corporate decarbonisation isn't going to happen through voluntary methods,” Hohn said.
Investors often struggle to analyze corporate climate plans. "Because though some organizations declare their commitment to environmental protection, they actually do the opposite,” Hohn said, "I expect a large proportion of companies will get graded F if they're not doing enough. Even companies with net zero emissions targets have failed to set out plans about how to reach those goals. The impact is going to be a bit like, 'the emperor has no clothes'."
32. Why are high oil prices a positive thing according to Hohn?
A. They will reduce energy demand.
B. There will be a shift to clean energy.
C. They will bring economic benefits.
D. There will be a reduction in energy imports.
33. What does Hohn argue for in paragraph 5?
A. Emissions targets should be debated.
B. Decarbonisation should be voluntary.
C. Climate plans should be informed to the public.
D. Climate regulation should be stricter.
34. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The suggestion about reducing carbon emissions.
B. The suggestion about helping investors.
C. The method of reaching zero emissions targets.
D. The method of avoiding being graded F.
35. Which would be the best title for the text?
A. Energy crisis—a cruel circle
B. Energy crisis—a cause of economic depression
C. Energy crisis—a wake up call
D. Energy crisis—a hard nut

It is harder to get your kids to read a book now with tablets and smartphones being so prevalent(盛行的). Actually, you don't have to force your kids into reading but rather encourage them to find enjoyment in it.
36 You can of course say no to any books that seem inappropriate, but kids will be more likely to read more if they are enjoying what they're reading and they feel like they have a say in the book that they're reading.
Reading is usually a solitary(獨(dú)自的)activity. 37 That's why you can read books together. When you're reading together, ask questions like "What did you notice on that page? "or"Did you see that…?" to make sure they are paying attention. 38 Doing voices is a great way, which can always make kids laugh. Do make reading together a cuddle(依偎)moment. It can't be a rushed activity. Take a breath and let the day go, and then move into story time. 39
Getting kids into books can take many different forms. Traditional books are great, but have you thought about getting them into stories via audiobooks(有聲讀物)? 40 And once they're excited to hear the rest of the story, continue at home, whether it's with a paper version of the book or more audiobooks. Kids can also listen on their own with headphones if they prefer to listen by themselves.

Thin, average, and undisciplined, I was the underdog of the boys' basketball tryouts(選拔賽)in seventh grade. Making the team was very important to me. Although I was extremely nervous, I truly thought I would make the team. But I went in overly optimistic, and quickly faced a cruel reality check.
When on the court, I was exhausted like an old man on his last legs; clearly, I was out of shape and having trouble keeping up. When it hit me that this was only the first day, and that there was a second to follow, I realized I would have to step it up in order to gain a spot on the team.
Unfortunately, day two went exactly like day one:I missed shots, passed badly like an out-of-breath fool. Hoping the coach was not watching all my bad moves, I had trouble keeping a positive attitude. Finally, Coach-who posted the lists of the Boys A and B Teams. Everybody quickly ran to catch a glimpse of the chosen few.
After scanning the list once, twice, three times, my name was nowhere. Although I had predicted the disaster that had now settled on me, with my head hanging. I slowly walked to the car. This experience definitely had not gone as I planned.
On the way home, I complained "How could that foolish boy is a better choice than me? And…”
"Adam!" my mom cut me off. "Why don't you realize maybe you need a little more practice? You’d better go to basketball camps next summer.”
Although I did not want to believe her, I knew it was true. Failing to make the team was nobody's fault but mine. Right then and there, in the middle of my anger, I realized I had to get my act together.

參考答案
Then I threw myself into as many basketball opportunities as I could find. Every day, I insisted on running 10 kilometers and jumping ropes 1000 times after school to increase my energy level and physical strength. Additionally, I practiced passing, dribbling and shooting with my friends every day to improve my basketball skills. When the summer holidays came, I signed up for a basketball camp, where I got a lot of professional basketball knowledge and training from the coaches. Gradually, I found myself making great progress.
????When I took part in the eighth-grade basketball tryouts, I was moderate, swift and strong. When on the court, I kept running without any trouble, dribbling freely and passing the basketball accurately. As long as I got the chance, I would try to shoot. One, two, three… I scored ten goals at last. There was no doubt that I succeeded in becoming a member of the basketball team. It was my determination and efforts that helped me achieve my dream.

M: Charlie Chaplin was an English comic actor, filmmaker and composer, who earned fame in the silent era. He is most famous for his on-screen character “The Little Tramp”. ?Born on April 16th, 1889 in London, Chaplin is considered one of the most important figures in the history of the film industry. Chaplin’s first performance was at a music hall as a stage actor and comedian at the age of 19. ?He went to the USA and began appearing at Keystone Studios in 1914. He soon developed the Tramp character and formed a large fan base. In 1919, Chaplin co-founded a distribution company United Artists, which gave him complete control over his films. ?His first feature-length film was The Kid (1921), followed by A Woman of Paris (1923), The Gold Rush (1925), and The Circus (1928). Chaplin wrote, directed, produced, edited, starred in and composed the music for most of his films. He had been productive and creative for about 75 years before he died in 1977.
