That youngsters were glued to online games on their smart phones was a great concern for Ngurang Meena, a school teacher in Nirjuli. The 30-year-old social science teacher, who ran the Ngurang Learning Institute, an adult literacy centre, said that she felt disheartened when she read student papers.“The graph of student performance is falling every year.It breaks my heart whenever I see answer sheets — basic grammar skills are missing and there’s an absence of any cohesive (連貫的) expression. They lack guidance and their reading culture is almost zero,” Meena said. When her school and the centre she ran had to close due to infectious diseases, she planned to do something to address the problem.
Inspired by a similar proposal in Mizoram, Meena set up a bookshelf with around 80 books as well as some benches on the side of the road in Nirjuli on 30 August 2020, where passers-by could spend time reading. The selections included motivational books, biographies and novels as well as comics for young children.“I have to please the minors with sweets to sit and read, but that is okay,” she laughed.
Meena’s bookshelf became a hit among youngsters who spent hours in the reading corner.Within two months, her effort became the talk of the town.
Now, generous contributions of books come in from the public and she is even receiving requests to set up such libraries in other parts of the state, including one in the capital, Itanagar.Since the tiny libraries are far from the main town, she also lends books out to those who want to read at home.
“I never thought that this would become such a big inspiration,” Meena said.“Since childhood, we have been told that books are our best friends. The next generation of kids is focused on games and other things.I don’t want them to head on the wrong track,” she added.
4. What’s the aim of Meena’s reading program?
A. To care for youngsters lacking in reading.
B. To help adults learn some cohesive expression.

C. She chose novels with beautiful covers.
D She selected books covering every category.
6. Which words can best describe Meena’s libraries?
A. Small and useless.
B. Influential and meaningful.
C. Large but impractical.
D. Widespread but unwelcome.
7. What is the best title for the text?

C
Researchers have developed a new method for training people to be creative, one that shows promise of succeeding far better than current ways. This new method, based on narrative (敘事的) theory, helps people be creative in the way children and artists are; by making up stories they imagine alternative worlds, shift perspectives (角度) and generate unexpected actions.
The current foundation of creativity training is the technique known as divergent thinking (發(fā)散思維), which doesn’t deliver the results that many hope for. A major issue is that this approach relies on data and information about the problems and successes of the past. It can’t come up with truly original actions. That’s where narrative method comes in, and both techniques could be used together.
The narrative method works by recognizing that we’re all creative. “We undervalue the creativity of kids and many others because we tend to think that some people are more creative than others, but the reality is that we’re just not training creativity in the right way,” said Angus Fletcher from the Ohio State University. Fletcher and his colleagues successfully used the narrative approach to train members from the US Army, the University of Chicago, and several Fortune 50 companies.
The narrative method asks participants to generate stories based on assumptive situations or think from someone else’s perspective. Their suggestions are then assessed by experts according to how certain they are that an action will work. For example, marketers might be asked to imagine a world where their competitor’s product was free and how they would respond to that, or to learn a little about how a co-worker thinks and then imagine how they would solve a specific problem.
The narrative method generates actual solutions without pressuring participants to come up with ideas that match an “appropriateness” criterion. What’s more, the narrative method doesn’t depend on data to fuel outputs, so it’s useful even in never seen-before situations.
8. What does the author say about divergent thinking?
A. It is perfect for multiple tasks.
B. It is suitable for creative actions.
C. It is unfit for complex problems.
D. It is inadequate for desired results.
9. What is Paragraph 4 intended to tell us about the narrative method?
A. Its effect on business climate.
B. Its application in creativity training.
C. Its role in improving product quality.
D. Its value in assessing workers’ ability.
10 Which is one advantage of the narrative method?
A. It relies on data and past performance.
B. It prepares people for standard answers.
C. It trains people to find practical solutions.
D. It focuses on guessing the future correctly.
11. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Creative Ideas and Creative Actions
B. Narrative Approach and Divergent Thinking
C. Narrative Method Can Make Anyone Creative
D. There Should Be No Prejudice Against Creativity
D 9. B 10. C 11. C

根據(jù)第二段的第一句“The current foundation of creativity training is the technique known as divergent thinking (發(fā)散思維), which doesn’t deliver the results that many hope for.”(現(xiàn)有的創(chuàng)造力訓(xùn)練的基礎(chǔ)是被稱為發(fā)散思維的技術(shù),而發(fā)散思維并沒(méi)有帶來(lái)很多人所希望的結(jié)果。)
根據(jù)第四段所舉的例子(即該段的最后一句)“For example, marketers might be asked to imagine a world where their competitor’s product was free and how they would respond to that, or to learn a little about how a co-worker thinks and then imagine how they would solve a specific problem.”(例如,營(yíng)銷(xiāo)人員可能被要求想象一個(gè)情景,那里競(jìng)爭(zhēng)對(duì)手的產(chǎn)品是免費(fèi)的,以及要求他們將如何應(yīng)對(duì)那種情況,或者了解同事的一些想法,然后想象他們將如何解決一個(gè)特定的問(wèn)題。)
根據(jù)最后一段的第一句“The narrative method generates actual solutions without pressuring participants to come up with ideas that match an ‘a(chǎn)ppropriateness’ criterion.”(敘事法產(chǎn)生實(shí)際的解決方案,而不會(huì)迫使參與者想出符合“適當(dāng)”標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的想法。)
D
Interspecies was once a technical term used in science to describe how one species got along with another. Now it is a word of more consequence: it arouses the new connections between humans and non-humans that are being made possible by technology. In Ways of Being, James Bridle, a British artist and technology writer, explores what this means for understanding the many non-human intelligences on Earth.
Mr Bridle makes clear that three kinds of minds are now interacting: human, non-human and machine. Using artificial intelligence (AI), machines will in future have the capability to interpose (使介入) themselves as translators between humans and other biological life forms.
It is true that profit is the main motive for advances in AI; as yet nature does not get much of a look in, and non-human intelligences go unexplored outside zoology departments. Computing is as focused on humans as ever, even as climate change and biodiversity-loss suggest it should devote much greater attention to other species.
The first step towards an interspecies future, Mr Bridle argues, is showing more appreciation for other forms of intelligence. To some extent, this is already happening. For example, through films and other initiatives many people now know that octopuses (章魚(yú)) have an advanced and strange intelligence. The next step, Mr Bridle declares, is recognizing that people live in a “more than human” world. Other intelligences have developed from a common evolutionary base, and they overlap (重疊) in ways that science is just beginning to discover.
Ways of Being would have benefited from sharper editing. Yet, in making clear the patience, imagination and humility required to better know and protect other forms of intelligence on Earth, he has made an admirable contribution to the dawning interspecies age.
12. Which of the following best illustrates the term “interspecies”?
A. A wolf hunts a rabbit. B. A robot does housework.
C. A lady walks her dog. D. A boy records a video for squirrels.
13. What does AI lay emphasis on nowadays?
A. Biodiversity. B. Other species. C. Humans. D. Climate change.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The characteristics of species evolution.
B. Expectations for the future development of AI.
C. Suggestions on future exploration of interspecies.
D. The importance of appreciation for other forms of intelligence.
15. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to Ways of Being?
A. Skeptical. B. Favorable. C. Tolerant. D. Conservative.
D 13. C 14. C 15. B

World in a dish: The garden path
Imagine a plate holding two strawberries, identical in appearance. One came from the supermarket, meaning it was probably harvested when it was still unripe, loaded onto a refrigerated truck and driven hundreds of miles. ___16___ The other strawberry was picked from a garden minutes before being eaten.
The first one will probably taste like a slightly soft cucumber, with light berry flavors and strong sour tastes. The second is likely to be sweet and floral; the flavor will stay in the mouth, as the pleasant smell will on the hands. ___17___ They are convenient and available in the northern hemisphere (北半球) in February.
___18___ This attitude misunderstands the ultimate appeal of gardening. It mistakes the product for the purpose. It is true that a garden can produce peas that offer a taste of spring while finding tomatoes in the shops can take some time, effort and expense.
A garden, especially in the early years, can also produce little but frustration. Beginning gardeners may plant the wrong crops for their soil. Squirrels have an annoying habit of taking single bites of cucumbers, beans and tomatoes, then leaving the rest on the vine (藤) to rot. ___19___
No matter. ___20___ The deepest pleasure — as with cooking, writing, bringing up children or almost anything worthwhile — is in the work itself. To garden is to patiently, lovingly and diligently help life flourish, in the ground and above it.
A. The real joy of gardening is the time spent doing it.
B. Growing your own vegetables ensures a reliable supply.
C. Well-stocked supermarket shelves are available all week.
D. Some columnists long considered gardening a waste of time.
E. However, supermarket strawberries are not entirely without advantages.
F. By the time it reached the plate it may have been off the vine for two weeks.
G. And even expert gardeners can lose a season's harvest to uncooperative weather.
F 17. E 18. D 19. G 20. A

根據(jù)空后的“The other strawberry was picked from a garden minutes before being eaten.(另一個(gè)草莓是在吃之前幾分鐘從花園里摘的。)” 選項(xiàng)F“By the time it reached the plate it may have been off the vine for two weeks.(當(dāng)它到達(dá)盤(pán)子時(shí),它可能已經(jīng)從藤上脫落兩周了。)”
根據(jù)空后的“They are convenient and available in the northern hemisphere(北半球) in February.(它們?cè)诒卑肭虻?月份是方便和可用的。)”可知,在北半球的二月份能夠獲得的草莓是第一種草莓,所以可以推測(cè)空處需要提到第一種草莓。選項(xiàng)E“However, supermarket strawberries are not entirely without advantages.(然而,超市里的草莓也不是完全沒(méi)有優(yōu)勢(shì)。)”

Mrs.Clarke switched the radio off: she wanted to make her middy lunch before her baby woke up.She pushed the pram(嬰兒車(chē))into the garden, left it under a tree out of the sun and went into the kitchen.
Then minutes later she came to the back door to see if everything was all right.A big dog was standing by the pram looking at the baby.“That’s the Johnson’s dog.I’ve told them they ought to keep that great animal in their own garden. Those dogs are a bit too much like wolves.”Then Mrs.Clarke went cold.“Wolves.What have I heard about wolves?”She was sure she had heard something about an escaped wolf on the radio. She looked hard at the creature by the pram—and the more she looked the more certain she became. It wasn’t the dog from next door.Like it, but different. It was as big as the dog, but the color was greyer and it looked thinner.
At this moment the creature put its front legs on the side of the pram and looked at the sleeping baby, licking its face. The baby woke up and began to cry quietly.
Mrs.Clarke wanted to scream, but she knew it would be wrong to do that. What should she do? “Inform the police,” the radio had said. But that meant leaving the garden and going to the telephone near the front door. She was sure that somehow she must get the wolf away from the prom. The she remembered the piece of meat she had bought. It was on the kitchen table.
