Skip the West End and discover some exciting, theatrical treasures—maybe in a pub or under a railway station—in one of London’s many alternative theatres. If you want to experience the glorious rush of discovering a five-star show in a 50-capacity auditorium, for a £ 10 ticket, off-West End is the way to go.
Theatre 503
Through the always-buzzing Latchmere Pub, up a very narrow staircase, and beyond a dinky foyer(門廳), you will find yourself at Theatre 503. It can hold 63 people at a time, which is a tight squeeze even then. But it’ s well worth the intimacy(親密感) that you’ll necessarily share with your neighbour for the outstanding productions.
King’s Head Theatre
Perhaps the perfect example of London pub theatre, the King’s Head has been in business since the 1970s. The King’s Head is consistent only in its stubborn refusal to be pigeonholed(歸類) or, indeed to be made into anything else. It feels like London theatre’s uncle who still wears ripped jeans and listens to cool music, refusing to give up its idealistic integrity for something perhaps more sensible but far less fun.
Soho Theatre
An institution that hardly needs introducing, Soho Theatre has been at the forefront for new writing and comedy for decades, producing some of the most exciting new talent on the scene today. As the name suggests, the theatre sits in the centre of Soho, and its bar has become a hub for artists and audiences alike.
Vaults Theatre
A truly unique place made up of eleven disused train tunnels below Waterloo station, with an atmosphere all of its own. Not only is Vaults Theatre home to some of the most thrilling immersive and alternative theatre, it’s also leading the way in accessibility, offering a pay-what-you-can ticket price on Wednesdays and Sundays as of Autumn 2022.
21.What is mentioned about Theatre 503?
A. Its creator. B. Its history. C. Its capacity. D. Its popularity.
22.What does King’s Head Theatre feature?
A. Keeping itself. B. Reasonable price.
C. Being more sensible. D. Beauty in appearance.
23.Which of the following made use of abandoned railways?
A. Theatre 503. B. King’s Head Theatre. C. Soho Theatre. D. Vaults Theatre.

Kyra Peralte thought keeping a diary during the pandemic might help her sort out her complicated feeling. In April 2020, the mother of two in Montclair, New Jersey, started writing frankly about the challenges of balancing work, marriage and motherhood during a global crisis.
Peralte wanted to know how other women were doing. “I wanted an interaction that felt human,” so she invited women from near and far to fill the remaining lined pages of her black-and-white marbled composition notebook with their own pandemic tales. She named the project The Traveling Diary. She came up with a system: Each person gets to keep the diary for three days and fills as many pages as she wishes. Then she is responsible for mailing it to the next person, whose address Peralte provides.
So far, more than 2,000 women from 30 countries have participated, some as far away as South Africa and Australia. More than 50 of these notebooks are currently in circulation, and about 20 completed ones are back in Peralte’s possession.
It felt meaningful to pass on something so personal. It felt like these were women that they had known even though they didn’t know them at all. Some did get to meet the women whose stories they read, through a virtual get-together that Peralte organized. Peralte often hosts Zoom events so the women get the chance to get to know one another more, share stories and connect more closely. Some of the women have even become close friends.
Peralte feels a strong bond with the people who filled its pages, none of whom she would have otherwise known. Her spontaneous (自發(fā)的) idea has had a profound effect on her and the other women who were part of it. “The Traveling Diary,” she says, “is making sisters out of strangers.”
24.Why did Peralte start The Traveling Diary?
A. To help sort out her feeling. B. To finish her pages of notebook.
C.To have an interaction with other women. D. To write a book covering pandemic tales.
25.What do we know about the project?
A. It has become popular across the world.
B. Each woman keeps the diary at least three days.
C. Each person fills pages based on Peralte’s wishes.
D. It requires Peralte to post the diary to the next person.
26.What can be inferred about participants from the last two paragraphs?
A. They are totally strangers before. B. They often hold parties themselves.
C. They have met each other in real life. D. They have been known to Peralte before.
27.Which of the following best describes Kyra Peralte?
A. Generous and tolerant. B. Creative and helpful.
C. Romantic and imaginative. D. Demanding and adventurous.

While for many a chef, serving up the fanciest and most delicious meals is the final aim, Rudolf Brand has an extra mission: fighting food waste. He believes that with his dishes, he can have a big impact: not just on people’s taste buds (味蕾), but also on their way of thinking about food and food waste.
With 22 years of experience, including Michelin-starred restaurants in London and Amsterdam, he has seen a lot of food wasted in his career. So what is the best way to prevent this? For him, it really comes down to one essential thing: “Rather than thinking about what new meals you want to cook, look at the remnants—what’s available, and then make a menu. This is what every chef should do.”
He’s clear on his solution: “Lose that fanciness, and look at the quality of the product and the flavor,” Rudolf explains. “There are too many chefs who are trying to be too fancy. They want to have only the biggest sea fish no matter what. Or they make a dish with only the heart of the cabbage, only using the most delicate leaves and then they throw away the rest.” He shakes his head at the idea of such waste.
He knows that one of his suppliers—a local farm—is left with a growing food mountain when top Michelin-starred chefs only buy the prized cuts of meat instead of ordering the entire leg. In just three or four weeks, the farm is left with 1,000 legs of lamb in the freezer. “And that’s just one supplier,” he says.
While other chefs will only accept the best from their suppliers, if something is smaller or damaged or has a few black bits, Rudolf is still going to use it. “Just because I’ll accept produce of slightly lower quality it doesn’t mean I’m going to serve less quality. It’s my job to turn that into good-quality food on the plate,” he says.
28.What is special about Rudolf Brand’s dishes?
A. They educate the public on food waste.
B. They offer different choices to taste buds.
C. They enjoy great popularity among customers.
D. They are served in Michelin-starred restaurants.
29.What does the underlined word “remnants” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Plans. B. Menus. C. Products. D. Remains.
30.What problems do some suppliers face?
A. They fail to win big orders. B. They are loaded with leftovers.
C. They are fined for wasting food. D. They sell produce at a low price.
31.What message does Rudolf seem to convey in the text?
A. Two heads are better than one. B. Small gains bring great wealth.
C. Constant dropping wears stones. D. Make the best use of everything.
D
What is the nature of the scientific attitude, the attitude of the man or woman who studies and applies physics, biology, chemistry, geology, engineering, medicine or any other science? We all know that science plays an important role in the societies in which we live. Many people believe, however, that our progress depends on two different aspects of science. The first of these is the application of the machines, products and systems of applied knowledge that scientists and technologists develop. Through technology, science improves the structure of society and helps man to gain increasing control over his environment.
The second aspect is the application by all members of society of the special methods of thought and action that scientists use in their work.
What are these special methods of thinking and acting? First of all, it seems that a successful scientist is full of curiosity — he wants to find out how and why the universe works. He usually directs his attention towards problems which he notices have no satisfactory explanation, and his curiosity makes him look for underlying relationships even if the data available seem to be unconnected. Moreover, he thinks he can improve the existing conditions and enjoys trying to solve the problems which this involves.
He is a good observer, accurate, patient and objective and applies logical thought to the observations he makes. He utilizes the facts he observes to the fullest extent. For example, trained observers obtain a very large amount of information about a star mainly from the accurate analysis of the simple lines that appear in a spectrum.
He is suspicious — he does not accept statements which are not based on the most complete evidence available — and therefore rejects authority as the only basis for truth. Scientists always check statements and make experiments carefully and objectively to verify them.
Furthermore, he is not only critical of the work of others, but also of his own, since he knows that man is the least reliable of scientific instruments and that a number of factors tend to disturb objective investigation.
Lastly, he is highly imaginative since he often has to look for relationships in data which are not only complex but also frequently incomplete. Furthermore, he needs imagination if he wants to make hypotheses of how processes work and how events take place.
These seem to be some of the ways in which a successful scientist or technologist thinks and acts.
32.Many people believe that science helps society to progress through________.
A. applied knowledge B. more than one aspect
C. technology only D. the use of machines
33.Which of the following statements is INCORRECT about curiosity?
A. It gives the scientist confidence and pleasure in work.
B. It gives rise to interest in problems that are unexplained.
C. It leads to efforts to investigate potential connections.
D. It encourages the scientist to look for new ways of acting.
34.According to the passage, a successful scientist would not________.
A. easily believe in unchecked statements B. easily criticize others’ research work
C. always use his imagination in work D. always use evidence from observation
35.What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. Application of technology. B. Progress in modem society.
C. Scientists’ ways of thinking and acting. D. How to become a successful scientist.

Everything that may draw us away from this aim is cut out of our lives. In the end we get our distinctions. But what?? 49 we have caused ourselves in the process! When my husband Randy died in late fall, deciding what to do with his garden was way down on the list of necessary tasks. During the first few months, I cried with our daughters, planned a memorial, cried with my family, celebrated a quiet Thanksgiving, and panicked over not having bought Christmas presents.
As the calendar turned to a new year, the often rainy days and long nights deepened my sorrow. I found myself exhausted at the end of February, both physically and mentally. Then the daffodils bloomed (開花) in the garden.
Years before, Randy had planted dozens of these lemon-yellow flowers. To him, they served as a reminder of hope, a promise that light and warmth would soon replace cold and dark. Looking at those daffodils, I thought about how Randy had considered our garden a living work of art, carefully choosing plants so we'd see new blooms every month.
Then I noticed all the weeds that had taken root and spread everywhere. The neglect (疏于打理) showed, for Randy's illness had lasted a couple of years, a time when he didn’t have energy for yard work the way he had before.
Faced with the neglected garden, I felt overwhelmed in the beginning. My daughters suggested I hire a service to clean everything up. I didn't respond.
Every time I sat in the garden alone, the memories of the lively garden came flooding, like the numerous scenes in an unforgettable film. Many days Randy came home from work, changed into old clothes, and headed out the door to mow or prune (修剪). Orange dragonflies followed him around the yard as he worked. Honeybees buzzed among the flowers, birds sang beautiful songs, and gentle breezes carried the sweet smell of dirt. No matter how cold or wet it was, the fresh air and physical activity made him energized and refreshed. For Randy, the work was quiet and comforting, which was a relief, as well as a pleasure.

The days grew warmer and lighter, and I started the work myself. Following Randy’s routine, I changed into old clothes and paced into the garden. Scanning around at the chaoes of tangled branches, disheveled stalks and wildly grown weeds, I took a deep breath and commenced to mow and prune from a small cranny. Gradually, honeybees and orange dragonflies emerged out of nowhere and hummed and buzzed all around the garden. I kept digging out the weeds as beady sweat oozed from my forehead. After what seemed like a century, I eventually cleared the east part of the garden. Nothing was better than waiting for the garden to be refreshed with those vivid scenes.
Weeks later, my daughters returned to visit me. No sooner had they arrived than I led them to the garden driven by irrepressible impulse and intense pride. “What a miracle!” they exclaimed in supreme astonishment and dashed over to embrace me tightly. Clasping my daughters, I beamed a radiant smile involuntarily and made a resolution to permanently keep my husband’s garden gorgeous as before. To my enlightenment, it was not merely a legacy to memorize Randy, but more of a reminder of hope. Through the same laboring, I got the hint of Randy’s fondness for the garden and that identical merriment and comfort would support me through whatever came in the future.

W: I want a bigger kitchen, and Don always wants to have a music room of his own. Mostly, we want more space when the baby comes.
M: I didn’t know that Don was a musician.
W: Yes, he started with the guitar, but now he can play some different instruments.
M: Wow, a dentist and a musician. I never knew.
W: There’s a lot that you don’t know about him.
M: Well, I’m glad you all are happy.
W: Well, I have to get going to the grocery store now.
M: Yeah, it was nice to run into you.
W: See you around.
M: See you!
Text 9
M: So how was your adventure vacation?
W: It was wonderful! The beaches were great. And there was a rain forest and a mountain in the center of the island where you could go rock climbing.
M: Wow! Did you go climbing?
W: Well, we went to the bottom of the mountain, spent four hours going to the forest, but then I just felt too tired, so I had to stand at the bottom and watched the others.
M: I don’t blame you. So what else did you do?
W: I spent a lot of time on the beach. I tried diving. It was great! Oh, and I saw a dolphin when I was under water.
M: Wow! Did you go bungee jumping (蹦極跳)?
W: I wanted to, but I realized I was scared of heights, so I just gave up. Quite by chance, the engine was broken on the boat, so they had to call the sailing trip off.
M: That’s a shame. So what was the most exciting part of the trip?
W: Probably exploring the old caves. I’d never done it before, and I thought it was great.
Text 10
W: It is well-known that “prom”, a formal dance held at the end of high school or college, is an important date in every student’s life. “Prom” means to walk around, beautifully dressed, in order to attract attention. The idea is that you should see and be seen by others. The “prom” is not just an American tradition though most people believe that it started in America. In Canada, the event is called a “formal”. In Britain and Australia, the old-fashioned word “dance” is more and more often being referred to as a “prom”, and for final school year students in all these countries, this event is the highlight of the school year, just as it is in the USA. Most countries have some forms of celebration when students finish high school. After all, it marks the end of life as a child, and the beginning of life as an adult. “Prom” is expensive to organize and the tickets can cost the students a lot of money. The tradition is that students themselves have to raise the money to pay for it. In some American schools, student unions save for the event for the four years they spend in high school.
