It was graduation season, and for Khalia Carter, walking on the stage meant more than just receiving a diploma (學(xué)位證書). The high school senior missed part of her final year after a terrible car accident. But she was determined to make it to the graduation—even if it was difficult for her to walk across the stage.
On April 18, Carter was hit by a careless driver. The accident left her with painful brain injuries (損傷). With about a month left in school, doctors determined she would not be able to return to her classes. Instead, she needed physical treatment every day to regain motor skills, like learning to walk again.
Carter’s mother Shawnda Cook recorded every step of her recovery process. “I sometimes feel sad and upset,” Cook said. “But there are more amazing feelings, like ‘Wow, this girl has the strength to move on, and we need to look up to her.’”
Carter missed most of her senior year celebrations but said graduation would not be one she missed. And that was just what she did on May 21, when she walked across the stage on her own to receive her diploma. “It’s almost impossible to get it done until it’s done,” Carter said, “So, if you put your mind into it and work for it, you will do it.”

Acupuncture (針灸) is a traditional Chinese medical practice of treating various physical and mental conditions. It won respect and interest in the United States after New York Times reporter James Reston visited China with President Nixon and needed an operation.
Chinese doctors used acupuncture on James after surgery (外科手術(shù)) to reduce his pain, and his recovery was quick. Curious about this, James was allowed to watch surgery on patients who received acupuncture for anesthesia (麻醉). Patients talked with their doctors during the operation and then walked back to their rooms on their own.
Acupuncture left James such a deep impression that he wrote a front-page article in New York Times about his operation upon returning to the United States. “A leading medical expert sent by Premier Zhou Enlai removed my appendix (闌尾). I was awake in the whole process.”

A mother goat can pick out her own baby from its voice alone by the time the kid is just five days old.
Researchers from University of London played kids’ voices to female goats and studied their responses. They were surprised to find that the animals were able to pick out their own kids’ voices.
“During the first week of their lives, the mother and the kid depend a lot on smell to recognize one another and the animals hide in grass and don’t call much in the wild. It’s a strategy they use to avoid enemies,” Dr. Elodie Briefer explained to BBC News, who led the research. “The mother calls to the kids when she wants them to come and be fed, so we expected that kids would recognize the mother’s voice.” In fact, this was the case for deer, which also use this hiding strategy, although they do not belong to the same family of species as goats.
She and her team recorded and played the young kids’ calls to the female goats and recorded their responses. She explained, “Even when the calls came from kids that are five to six days old, we could see the mothers responding more to the voices of their own babies.” Hearing the voices of their own kids, the females would look towards the speaker that the sound was coming from, moving around and calling in response.
The scientists say that understanding how goats behave is of great importance. “This helps us understand just how smart these animals are,” said Dr. Briefer. “Farmers might be able to change their way to raise goats considering this natural behavior.”
32.How do mother goats recognize their kids during the first week?
A.They depend on their touch. B.They depend on their smell.
C.They depend on their voice. D.They depend on their sight.
33.In the experiment, what does a mother goat do when hearing her kids’ voices?
A.Hide herself somewhere. B.Jump over and over.
C.Make voices in response. D.Behave just as usual.
34.What do the scientists think of understanding the behavior of goats?
A.Meaningless. B.Important. C.Uninteresting. D.Puzzling.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.A mother goat can pick out her baby from its voice.
