M: Global what? You mean all that worry about the planet getting hotter? Are you sure about all that? I read in the newspaper the other day that it’s not getting hotter — it’s just a bit hot right now. That’s all.
W: Well, you shouldn’t believe everything you read in the newspapers, you know.
M: I guess that’s the problem. People like you and me don’t know what to believe.
W: Well, I’m telling you that you should be worried. I’m a weather scientist, young man.
聽第7段材料,回答第8、9題。
8.Which state was the coldest last year?
A.Florida. B.California. C.Illinois.

A.It causes more of them to happen.
B.It makes them more powerful.
C.It has no effect on them at all.
【答案】8.C 9.B
【原文】
M: It's crazy to think that some people don't believe in climate change.
W: I know. There were record high temperatures in California last year. Florida suffered from the heat and was always hit with more heavy hurricanes, while Illinois was experiencing freezing temperatures.
M: I heard someone say the climate can't be warming, because there are still places with extremely low temperatures. Is that true?
W: Perhaps they are confusing weather and climate. Weather is measured over a short period of time, and climate is the measure of longterm temperature patterns. And our climate is experiencing higher and higher averages in temperature every year.
M: Do you think this rise in temperature directly affects forest fires, hurricanes, and snowstorms?
W: Scientists believe so. As of now, they can't say if it actually causes more hurricanes, but they are certain it affects their power.
聽第8段材料,回答第10至12題。
10.What is the conversation mainly about?
A.Detecting fires. B.Fighting fires. C.Using fires.
11.How many fires did California have in 2020?
A.About 400. B.Around 50. C.Over 8600.
12.What size of fire can the new satellites discover?
A.Size of a plane. B.Size of a car. C.Size of a sports field.
【答案】10.A 11.C 12.B
【原文】
W: We’re developing a new technology that can detect forest fires as soon as they start.
M: That sounds amazing. Given how many fires there have been recently, it’s something the world desperately needs.
W: Indeed. In 2020 alone, California has had over 8600 fires, losing roughly 4% of the state’s trees.
M: That is truly mind-blowing.
W: Yes. The other place where it will be useful is Australia. At the start of the year, there were 50 separate bush fires burning across the country.
M: So how will your new detection system work?
W: We’re going to use a new range of satellites which have heat cameras.
M: Don’t other satellites have those?
W: Yes, but none is so advanced. They can detect a fire the size of a football field. The new one can sense a fire the size of a car.
M: And will that be enough of a difference to stop the fire from spreading?
W: We believe so. Hopefully it will give firefighters enough time to stop it before it gets too big. If they get the plane up in time, they could stop it dead.
M: If it works, I really hope you get recognition for it.
W: I just want to try and stop trees from burning.

W: Yes. We called it “the green campaign”.
M: Oh, the green! I guess this campaign is related to environment.
W: Yes, of course. All participants in the campaign will wear green because we want to tell people about the bad effects of pollution.
M: That seems great! Can you give me more details about your campaign?
W: Sure. The first day we will collect all the garbage at school. The following day we’ll plant some trees. Then we will hang some posters on the school board.
M: Interesting! I’d like to help you in your campaign. I have an idea.
W: Yes, go ahead. What’s it?
M: We may ask our teachers to help us in our campaign by not bringing their cars to school.
W: It’s a good idea.
M: Also, we may paint some paper, bottles and lamps and use them as decorations for our classrooms. I’ll invite George to join us. He’s ready to help, you know.
W: Wow! How great, Peter! Thank you so much for your help.
M: You’re welcome.

【原文】
The climate of the Earth is always changing. In the past it changed as a result of natural causes. Nowadays, however, the term, climate change, has some new meanings. The changes are thought to be mainly due to human behavior rather than due to natural changes in the atmosphere.
The greenhouse effect is very important when we talk about climate change. It has something to do with the gases which keep the Earth warm. The extra greenhouse gases are released by humans. These gases are believed to be the most threatening.
The term “Greenhouse Effect” is commonly used to describe the increase in the Earth’s average temperature that has been recorded over the past 100 years. However, without the “natural greenhouse effect”, life on Earth would be very different from what we see today.
