Not only does the use of plastic water bottles hurt your wallet, but it also causes pollution, wastes energy, and surprisingly wastes water. Only 23% of the plastic in America ends up in recycling bins, meaning over $1 billion worth of plastic is treated as rubbish a year. Recently, Skipping Rocks Lab has invented a kind of water bottle called Ooho.
It’s a kind of convenient, clear water bottle that can either be drunk or eaten. To drink it, you can either get rid of the membrane (膜) or tear a hole in the membrane with your teeth to pour the water into your mouth. To eat it, you simply put the whole bottle in your mouth. It’s completely insipid so you needn’t worry about any taste.
It aims for large outdoor events where tons of plastic bottles are used and frequently left behind as litter. Too much plastic is sure to do harm to the environment, which could account for the purpose of such a new invention.
The team has been working for the past two years to develop the technology and materials that are needed to produce Ooho. The price for an only bubble (泡狀物) or a unit of bubbles hasn’t been decided yet, but it costs about two cents to create a unit, which is cheaper than plastic bottles. The team has also been selling Ooho water bottles in London for the past six months.
Ooho is catching many people’s attention and has raised over $1 million in only three days. It’s mostly being sold at events at the moment to interest the buyers while the production machine is getting up and running. It’s quickly making a rise, so keep an eye out for these bottles of the future.
6. How is most plastic in America dealt with?
A. It is wasted by people.
B. It is reused as new energy.
C. It is buried under the ground.
D. It is applied to new technology.
7. What does the underlined word “insipid” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Sweet. B. Delicious. C. Tasteless. D. Interesting.
8. What can we infer about the Ooho?
A. It plans to be sold at a very low price.
B. It has some advantages over plastic bottles.
C. It has taken the place of plastic bottles in London.
D. Proper materials of making Ooho are hard to find.
9. What’s the author’s attitude towards Ooho’s future?
A. Doubtful. B. Uninterested. C. Worried. D. Positive.
10. Who might be the target readers?
A. Scientists. B. Experts. C. Environmentalists. D. The public.
【答案】6. A 7. C 8. B 9. D 10. D

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions —and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly (均勻的)across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.
11. What does the discovery show about westerners?
A. They observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways.
B They have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions.
C. They pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth.
D. They consider facial expressions universally reliable.
12. What were the people asked to do in the study?
A. To observe the researchers’ faces. B. To get their faces impressive.
C. To make a face at each other. D. To classify some face pictures.
13. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A The participants in the study.
B. The researchers of the study.
C. The data collected from the study.
D. The errors made during the study.
14. In comparison with Westerners, what are Easterners likely to do?
A. They study the mouth more frequently.
B. They examine the eyes more attentively.
C. They read facial expressions more correctly.
D. They do translation more successfully.
15. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions
B. Effective Methods to Develop Social Skills
C. How to Increase Cross-cultural Understanding
D. The Eye as the Window to the Soul
【答案】11. C 12. D 13. A 14. B 15. A
