“Thiswasabreakthroughsurgeryandbringsusonestepclosertosolvingtheorganshortagecrisis.Therearesimplynotenoughdonorhumanheartsavailabletomeetthelonglistofpotentialrecipients,” saidBartleyGriffith,theheartsurgeonwhoperformedtheoperation. “Wearedoingcautiously,butwearealsooptimisticthatthisfirst-in-the-worldsurgerywillprovideanimportantnewoptionforpatientsinthefuture.”
Inthedonorpig,threegenesthatwouldhaveledtotherepaidrejectionofthepig’sheartwereknockedout.Sixhumangenesresponsibleforimmuneacceptanceofthepigheartweretheninsertedintothegenome.Finally,onegeneinthepigwasremovedtopreventexcessivegrowthofthehearttissueonceithadbeenimplanted.
