Well done, Javier, on all your hard work this term. You are always active in speaking activities, and this is great. I always enjoy rending your writing, too. You have very good ideas. You can see from your marks that rending is not a problem for you.
Sometimes you still make small grammar mistakes, and I think you can improve your vocabulary. I recommend you review many of the language points we have studied this term. There is extra language practice in your online workbook.
The area you need to work on most is listening. I know this is difficult for you. I recommend more practice at home. Listen to English TV shows, podcasts (播客) and radio as much as possible. I can give you a list of things to listen to.
I’ve enjoyed working with you. Have a nice holiday, and good luck for next term!
Teacher’s name: Erin Gibbs

Colin and Donna Craig-Brown were working in their New Zealand garden in late August. They were removing unwanted plants when they found something strange. After a little digging, Colin discovered there was a very large potato growing in his garden. And they never planted potatoes!
“We couldn’t believe it,” Donna said. “It was just huge.” The couple worked the potato out of the soil and brought it to a scale. It weighed almost 8 kilograms.
The potato may be the largest ever recorded. In 2011, a large potato from Great Britain weighed just under 5 kilograms. The New Zealand potato, now named Doug, could break the record. The Craig-Browns asked Guinness (吉尼斯) to recognize their potato as the largest ever. They are waiting to hear from the organization.
The potato has become famous in the town of Hamilton. Colin took Doug on walks around the neighborhood. “We put a hat on him. We put him on Facebook, taking him for a walk, giving him some sunshine,” Colin said. “It’s all a bit of fun.”
Colin said he does not have any special gardening methods to pass on. Normally, he and his wife fertilize (施肥) their garden with waste from cows and dried grasses. The Craig-Browns were growing cucumbers (黃瓜) in that part of the garden, so they didn’t expect there was a potato. It may have been growing for two years or more.
The potato is getting a little old now, two months after it was taken from the ground. Right now, it is in the freezer.

A. Because it won’t go bad easily.
B. Because it is an unexpected visitor.
C. Because it may be two years old at least.
D. Because it may break the Guinness record.
27. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Two skilful gardeners. B. A potato on Facebook.
C. The possible largest potato. D. A special gardening method.

At the beginning of the 21st century China had no high-speed railways. Traveling on trains in China was slow and uncomfortable. With low average speeds, it would take a long time to travel between major cities like Shanghai and Beijing.
Today, China already has the world’s largest network of high-speed railways. No fewer than 37,900 kilometers (about 23,500 miles) of lines cross the country, linking all of its major mega-city clusters (特大城市群), and all have been completed since 2008, with a further 3,700 kilometers due to open in the coming months of 2021. The network is expected to double in length again, to 70,000 kilometers, by 2035.
With trains reaching speeds of up to 350 kph on many lines, intercity travel has been changed and the control of airlines has been broken on the busiest routes. By 2020, 75% of Chinese cities with a population of 500,000 or more had a high-speed rail link.
In comparison, Spain has about 3,218 kilometers of high-speed rail lines built for operation at over 250 kph. At the same time, the UK currently has just 107 kilometers while the United States has a 735.5 kilometers railway line connecting highly developed areas.
As China seeks to grow its influence across Asia and into Europe and Africa through the significant “Belt and Road Initiative (一帶一路倡議)”, rail is playing a key part in creating the new “Silk Road” it desires.
Although its trains are now among the fastest in the world, China is also spending significant funds on the development of maglev(磁懸浮) technology, which will allow it to operate passenger services at up to 620 kph — well beyond the current limits of steel wheel on steel rails.
28. How was China’s railway system at the beginning of the 21st century?
A. It was the world’s largest. B. It covered its major cities.
C. It was fast and comfortable. D. It was slow and uncomfortable.
29. What was the length of China’s high-speed railway network in 2021?
A. About 3,700 kilometers. B. About 37,900 kilometers.
C. About 41,600 kilometers D. About 70,000 kilometers.
30. Which country has the second largest high-speed railway network?
A. China B. Spain.
C. The United Kingdom. D. The United States.
31. Why is China spending significant funds on maglev technology?
A. Because it is much cheaper.
B. Because it is more environmentally friendly.
C. Because it is already widely used in other countries.
D. Because it can break through the current speed limit.

As online schooling took effect during the influenza pandemic (大流感), parents across the United States noted that many children did not have their own learning areas at home.
One father, named Mitch Couch, lives in central California. His 16-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son are both studying from home. And they kept taking over the kitchen table for their online school lessons, which gave the father an idea — he would make them their own desks.
After seeing how it helped his family, he had a thought: Why not provide other children with their own desks — ones that they could decorate with stickers and fun paint?
His idea was to show others how to build desks for their children. He made a quick YouTube video to guide parents in desk-making.
The desks he made were child-size, simple and not costly. Couch said that he built children’s desks for about $20. He made them from plywood (膠合板). A single piece of plywood, 1.2 meters by 2.4 meters, made four desks. He also added a built-in area for books and papers. It was a simple structure (結構), but it worked.
Leaders of a wood store saw his video online. They offered to provide materials if he would build more. They also contacted local school officials to help students in need.
The first order was for around 20 desks. But it quickly increased at least 50 more.
On a recent day, Couch was building more than 10 desks in an area outside of his house. He has made many of these desks. So, he can build one in just about 15 minutes.
He has received many thank-you messages and pictures from parents. Some parents said that their children were “doing better and focusing more” because they have their own space.
32. What was Couch’s purpose of making desks for children?
A. to receive many thanks. B. to give them learning areas.
C. to cheer them up at home. D. to show desk-making skills.
33. How did Mitch Couch help other parents at first?
A. By collecting money. B. By providing materials.
C. By sharing a guiding video. D. By answering questions
34. Which word best describes the desk designed by Mitch Couch?
A. Heavy. B. Practical. C. Large. D. Smart.
35. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Making desks for children helps a lot.
B. A good skill will never be out of time.
C. Online schooling has some side effects.
D. Confidence is the most important thing.

When speaking English, we usually translate words from our native language in our head and it takes us a lot of time just to speak a simple sentence. 36 Do you want to speak English fluently and naturally? The following steps will help you.

Think small first. I mean think in words, only simple words. The learning of your mother tongue starts with simple words like “dad” “table” “blue” and so on. 38 . Step 2: Think in sentences
This step needs more time and effort. But it’s worth it. 39 , such as “It’s a table.” “I have a table.” “The table is blue.”, etc. Just do it step by step and day by day. Don’t jump to long sentences if you’re a beginner. Otherwise, you’ll be let down.
Step 3: Think in conversations

Christmas was approaching, but I still hadn’t prepared a gift for my wife Susan. Susan was good at planning things, so she would have thoughtful gifts for everyone long before Christmas. I always had excuses for being late for the preparation for gifts.
This time, in my defense (辯解), I must add that we had just moved to Italy and were still unready. While Susan was away on business, I continued working on the house and cared for Molly, Susan’s beloved cat. I kept Molly indoors most of the time and planned to introduce her to the outdoors slowly. But Molly obviously had other ideas. One day she rushed out and was gone. She wasn’t familiar with the new place, which worried me.
Northern Italy is reasonably warm, so she wouldn’t feel very cold. But she might have to handle other feral (轉生的) cats. Our holidays would be affected if Molly wasn’t back before Christmas. Therefore, I made a poster with some words of Molly, a hurried drawing and a promised payback. Soon people visited me with many kinds of feral cats because of my unclear drawing or the reward (報酬) I offered. I could never turn away a hungry animal. So many cats moved into our yard soon.

1. 續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應為150左右;

第一節(jié)
A Beautiful Campus
Last weekend, a class meeting “A Beautiful Campus” was held in our class, aiming to raise the students’ awareness of protecting the environment. The whole class had an active discussion about how to make it. Some advised forming a good habit of putting rubbish into the dustbin at any time; some thought it important to make a rule for those often littering at school while others reminded us to be polite to each other in life, refusing to speak in a rude way.
At the end of the meeting, the monitor called on everyone to make a contribution to our beautiful campus.
第二節(jié)
Susan’s daily calls continued, and so did my daily searches. I still didn’t dare to tell the truth on the phone about Molly’s disappearance, which also drew most attention of my daily life. Therefore, I was just not in the mood for preparing the gifts. The day before Christmas Susan returned, eager to see her baby cat. On the way home, she showed me the gifts for Molly as we drove home, while I silently considered how to break the news.
When approaching our home, Susan shouted happily. “You give me the best Christmas gift!” I was confused. Looking around, I saw Molly playing with other cats in our yard. Then I realized that Susan thought the group of cats along with Molly were the Christmas gift I had prepared for her. But now I still didn’t know when Molly came back. Anyway, it was lucky that I avoided the possible blame and gave Susan a Christmas gift at the last minute again.
