There is a?poster?in the nature?reserve?that says: "The authorities?demand that all?illegal hunting?should be stopped immediately?to protect the?species?that are?endangered. Recently, some?hunters?have been?illegally hunting?wild animals,?leading?to a mass?extinction?of them, and their habitats?have been?threatened, too. According to WWF, an average?of 75?species?become?extinct?every day in the world. Some wild animals are dying out at a very fast rate. This is an alarming?number. Many people are aware of the problem and are?concerned?about the endangered wildlife. Some countries have taken?effective measures?to protect these?creatures. Why on earth do the?hunters?shoot these animals? Some intend?to sell them as goods to make a?profit, others to make a?living. For example,?antelopes?are?hunted?for their skin and fur. But, to our delight, we have made great?progress?in wildlife protection.

The day of the balloon festival, I felt as light as a hot-air balloon. This year I wouldn't just be watching. I'd be riding in Mr. J's truck, following the flight of the balloon and meeting it when it came down.
It was a perfect day. Dad and I drove down the road, looped(環(huán)狀繞行) the lake, and turned into the field that was being used as a parking area. Dad pointed to the lake. "That's where you are to find the crew," he said.
We came to a stop and I got out of the car.
And then I saw it, a white bird with black stripes, brown head, and skinny legs. It screeched(尖叫) and thrashed(拍打) in the dirt in front of the cars that were driving downhills. Its wings looked broken. Suddenly it shrieked (悲鳴)and flew off.
“Dad,”I called, but my father was watching the balloons.
“It's a killdeer(北美喧鵒).” I turned to see a silver- haired old woman. “It has a nest here somewhere,” she said. “In the parking area?” I asked. She nodded firmly. “It was a nesting place before it became a parking area. No one told the killdeer about the balloon festival!”
“Jack!” Dad called, “Isn’t it time you went down to meet Mr. J?”
“I have got to go.” I said. But the woman pointed with her walking stick. There, on the ground was a perfect clutch(窩) of speckled eggs, looking like pebbles. They were almost in the path of cars, trucks, motorbikes and stomping feet.
Screech! The parent bird was back, its wing all twisted again. “Jack!” Dad called again. “The balloons are ready to launch.”
“Dad!I am…” A truck roared over the hill. Brakes screamed and dust flew. “What s the matter?” asked Dad angrily from the truck.

“Dad, I’m not going.” I said.I have to stay here so the cars won't roll over the nest.” Because of so many things to deal with, my dad drove away to tell Mr. J. Then the woman reminded me that it was time to come up with a plan to protect the nest. Just then several cars pulled over. That was when a plan took sudden, perfect shape in my head. I ran over to turn to them for help. It was not long before they understood everything. More drivers joined in. They parked the cars in the way to protect the nest.
Soon a ring of vehicles surrounded the nest. Nothing or nobody is allowed to get close to the eggs. All the morning we failed to take part in the balloon festival activities. By noon my stomach was rumbling(隆隆作響). The festival was over and people began to leave. When Dad came to pick me up, only the woman and I were stationed there. And, the killdeer, watching over her eggs in the nest, was perfectly safe. I missed the activity but I didn’t regret it, for I invested my time in something much more meaningful — protecting the beautiful but fragile killdeer family.
