Son: (nervously approaching the table) Erm... Dad, can we talk?
Father: Sure! You know you can always turn to your dad for a chat.

This book says our world is in danger. It describes the various threats to the environment. The situation is so serious that we must do something to save the Earth.
The writers ask us to “imagine that the Earth is inside a kind of greenhouse with the atmosphere(大氣層) around it. The atmosphere acts like the glass: It lets sunlight in and keeps warmth from getting out. The atmosphere is essential for all living things. Without it, the Earth would be as cold and lifeless as the surface of the moon.”
“The trouble is that our atmosphere is changing because we are polluting it with chemicals—in the form of gases—and it is keeping in too much heat!”
These gases, mainly carbon dioxide(CO2) are produced by burning fuels such as petrol. The greenhouse effect may cause the level of the sea to rise and flood cities and even whole countries.
The burning and cutting down of the forests is making the greenhouse effect worse because trees take in CO2. It also causes soil erosion and flooding, as well as destroying the homes of people and animals that live in the forests.
Many of our habits cause pollution, especially our habit of using things once and then throwing them away. This creates massive mountains of rubbish. We do not know what to do with the rubbish and it pollutes our land and sea. For example, people throw away as many as seven billion drink cans in Britain each year. That is enough to reach from the Earth to the moon.
The book is asking us to become “green consumers”. That means we should only buy and use environmentally friendly goods so that we can save the Earth. These goods will not damage the environment.
Let’s be green consumers and enjoy living a better life on the Earth!

Mark Hoffman and his wife own a bed-and-breakfast guesthouse in rural Kempton, Illinois. They often serve their guests fresh products from the garden.
The Hoffmans have been growing food and flowers for twenty-five years. For almost ten of those years, Mr.Hoffman has been experimenting and working with shade plantings. He says, “The bottom line here is that most plants will produce more in full sun. But if you do not have full sun, there are other choices.” For example, he grows tomatoes near oak trees. Oak trees can produce a lot of shade. But Mr. Hoffman says his tomato plants grow as long as they get five hours’ direct sunshine a day, especially morning sun. Not only does this go against the traditional advice that tomatoes need six, eight, even twelve hours’ full sun a day, it also shows how plants and tree roots can share nutrients and water. Mr. Hoffman also planted asparagus(蘆筍) around a tree. When it rains, all the rain from the leaves of the tree drops down right on the asparagus.
Mr. Hoffman says plants with wider leaves seem to do better in shady environments. He also found that his potatoes did better partly in shade than in full sun.
Moving them out of the sun helped control the problem with leaf hoppers. Mr. Hoffman does not use pesticide. Instead, he planted the potatoes in the shade, especially on the east side of the tree. The potatoes get morning sun, but they are shaded during the hottest part of the day. Leaf hoppers dislike shade, and the hottest part day is when they do the worst of their damage.
Time of day, brightness of the sun, shadows from trees, walls and buildings all influence how much sunlight falls or does not fall on plants. People who are interested in shade planting should also consider different conditions which planting vegetables in the shade.
26.What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To introduce Mark Hoffman and his family.
B.To recommend a method of managing a website.
C.To show vegetables can be planted in the shade.
D.To show vegetable must be planted in the shade.
27.What can we infer from the second paragraph?
A.Food and flowers produce more in the shade.
B.Food and flowers can’t grow without full sun.
C.Planting food in the shade is the best choice.
D.Sun can influence the production of some plants.
28.By using asparagus as an example, the writer wants to explain that ________.
A.how plants and trees share water B.vegetables grow better in the shade
C.how leaves get sunshine under the tree D.a(chǎn)sparagus prefers to grow in the shade

China’s national anthem, March of the Volunteers, is a song that we learn at the beginning of primary school and sing at every flag-raising ceremony. 30 In September, 2016, the government passed the National Anthem Law, which became effective (生效) from Oct 1, 2017. 31

Superfast Writing Robot
Tech company has made a powerful robot that can write novels.
Type in “A cat wants to go to space” and ask the robot to write a bedtime story. Just one second later, you’ll get the story of Max, who struggled his way past many difficulties to sing among the stars.
This robot writer is real. It’s called ChatGPT. US company OpenAI developed it to create human-like texts. It can translate languages, communicate with people and write songs, poems and even jokes. It’s one of the most powerful AI of its kind, with the complete writing area of a real person!
People around the world have tried ChatGPT and posted their results on social media. Some used it to write history articles, some asked it to take notes of presentations, and some even formed advice on how to chat with people at a party, reported The Atlantic.
The power of ChatGPT lies in its speed and understanding of difficult matters. We may spend hours researching, understanding and writing an article in a special field. But ChatGPT can produce a well-written one in seconds. Another good thing about it is that if you ask dark, harmful questions, such as how to make gun, it will not give you an answer.
ChatGPT comes along at a time when AI is becoming increasingly able to do creative tasks. The materials they create are difficult to be different from those made by humans. This leads to many problems, such as the copyright and the definition(定義) of art. Since the system is largely trained using words from the Internet, it can also pick up those which are not suitable for certain groups. These are the things humans need to solve.
56.According to the text, if you type in “A cat wants to go to space” to make up a story, what will you get?
57.What can ChatGPT do in the complete writing area of a real person?
58.If you have a chance to use ChatGPT, what will you do with it? Why?

根據(jù)“Without it, the Earth would be as cold and lifeless as the surface of the moon”可推測(cè)此處是指“非常重要的”,故選C。

通讀全文,以及第一段“ It describes the various threats to the environment. The situation is so serious that we must do something to save the Earth.”

But if you do not have full sun, there are other choices.’”(他說:“歸根結(jié)底,大多數(shù)植物在陽光充足的情況下會(huì)產(chǎn)生更多的果實(shí)。
根據(jù)第二段中“Oak trees can produce a lot of shade. When it rains, all the rain from the leaves of the tree drops down right on the asparagus.” 故選A。

One thing I keep doing every day
Good morning, everyone!
I am very happy to be here to make a speech today. The topic of my speech is one thing I keep doing every day.
As we know, what we keep doing every day is very important for us to achieve our goals. That’s why I keep reading every day no matter how busy I am. I usually spend about one hour a day reading my favorite books and I often share what I read with my friends. Honestly speaking, reading not only brings me knowledge, but also teaches me how to get on well with others and how to be a better person.
Keeping reading helps me open up my eyes to the outside world. The more I read, the wiser I will be.
That’s all. Thank you!
