After high school English teacher Larry Abrams started his teaching career in a far suburb outside of Philadelphia, he found he taught in a book desert (荒漠). Many of the kids in school simply struggled (掙扎) with reading and then writing .
In 2017, when one of his students told him she had no book to read to her 2-year-old daughter, Abrams took action. He put forward a call to friends and family asking for gently used children’s books, and in no time, he had more than 1, 000 of them. He began handing out the books to young moms and local elementary schools. That was the start of his nonprofit, BookSmiles, which has since collected, sorted, and handed out hundreds of thousands of books throughout New Jersey and the Philadelphia area — and will soon reach 1 million.
BookSmiles calls on people to help collect books and drop them off in the group’s large collection boxes, which are painted with literary-themed artwork and put outside local businesses, houses of worship, schools, and people’s homes. Books are often handed out through teachers, who come to the book bank and choose as many books as they want.
Larry Abrams thinks children should be read to because it’s something joyful that creates a bond (紐帶) between the parent and the child in such an important way. Reading books creates a moment that will never die off and always stay with the child. And what’s more, reading books to kids gives them power. The most important tool that they get is words. There are some kids who grow up hearing lots of words because they’re read to every single night. They are used to hearing sentences connected together when they’re babies. And then there are other kids who never get that. Reading and books help level that playing field. It gives words, millions of words, to these babies who really, really need them.
4.What did Larry Abrams find about his working environment?
A.He had to live a hard life in a desert.
B.His students were very short of books.
C.His students couldn’t read or write at all.
D.His school was struggling to make ends meet.
5.What caused Larry Abrams to set up BookSmiles?
A.His student’s trouble. B.His school’s requirement.
C.His daughter’s need for books. D.His close friend’s request.
6.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.What books BookSmiles hands out. B.Where BookSmiles’s boxes are.
C.How busy BookSmiles’s workers are. D.How BookSmiles works.
7.What does Larry Abrams think of reading to children?
A.It helps parents and children to kill time.
B.It makes children depend more on their parents.
C.It puts children far ahead of those without being read to.
D.It develops children’s language skills by parent-child behavior.
The traditional Chinese Longtaitou Festival, or Dragon Head-Raising Festival, falls on the second day of the second lunar month every year, and recognizes the start of spring and farming. This year it falls on March 14.
Ancient people believed that after this day, rainfall increases because the rain-bringing Dragon King has awoken from his winter sleep. A well-known phrase goes, “Er yue er, long tai tou”, meaning “On the second day of the second lunar month, the dragon lifts his head.”
The festival celebrates ancient Chinese agrarian culture, and while some of traditional ways to celebrate it are no longer practised, others continue to exist.
The most famous tradition is getting a haircut. Some believe that going to the barber on this day gets rid of bad luck, while others believe getting a haircut during the first month of the lunar calendar brings bad luck. Another saying warns that cutting your hair in the first lunar month will cause your uncle to die. Although today few pay attention to it, it was once a tradition to line up outside barbershops on the day of Longtaitou.
People eat tofu balls in East China’s Fujian Province during the festival, and often make tofu and vegetable balls to pray for family and business. Fried beans are the traditional festival food for people in parts of Shandong Province. Eating chengyao cakes, which are made with sticky rice, during the festival is a tradition in Suzhou, East China’s Jiangsu Province, owing to the saying, “If you eat chengyao cakes on Longtaitou, your waist won’t hurt all year.” Meanwhile other foods, like noodles, dumplings, and spring rolls, are named after dragon body parts to mark the day. Noodles are dragon’s beard (long xu), dumplings are dragon’s ears (long er), and spring rolls are dragon’s scales (long lin).
8.What did ancient people believe after Dragon Head-Raising Festival?
A.The dragon lifts his head.
B.There’s more rainfall.
C.The dragon is still sleeping.
D.There’s less rainfall.
9.What does the underlined word “agrarian” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Agricultural. B.Industrial. C.Travelling. D.Manufacturing.
10.What do people eat in Suzhou during the festival?
A.Tofu balls. B.Fried beans. C.Chengyao cakes. D.Dumplings.
11.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.The history and development of China’s Longtaitou Festival
B.Cut your hair on China’s Longtaitou Festival
C.The culture and traditions of China’s Longtaitou Festival
D.Food about China’s Longtaitou Festival
Many of us think, wrongly, that the moon doesn’t change. For example, the Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ruoxu once wrote that “Generations have come and passed away; From year to year the moons took alike, old and new.”
However, a new study published in the journal Nature Geoscience shows that the moon is in fact slowly shrinking over time. For the study, a group of US scientists examined and analyzed thousands of photographs taken by the NASA orbiter Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (月球勘測軌道飛行器照相機) . They found that there were lots of faults (斷層) on the surface of the moon. These faults were formed by recent movement on the moon.
According to NASA, the moon is made up of pieces of rocks with a hot core (核) .The moon continued to expand as it was born. But in this process, it released energy and cooled down. Then it began to shrink, in a way comparable to the shrinking of a grape into a raisin (葡萄干) . Over the past several hundred million years, it has become 46 meters “skinnier”. But due to its hard and rocky crust (外殼) . the moon’s surface continues to push up, “Some of these quakes can be fairly strong around five on the Richter scale (里氏震級 ) ,” said Thomas Watters, a senior scientist at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in the US.
But does that mean the moon is a dangerous place that human shouldn’t try to explore and live on in the future? Maybe not, reported the Telegraph, “This isn’t anything to worry about. The moon may be shrinking, but not by much. It’s not going anywhere,” Watters comforted us.
The new discovery proves that the idea that the moon is a dead, boring place is wrong. “We have been to the moon and we’ve done some great science, but there is still a lot we don’t know. The moon is shrinking — we didn’t really realize that until recently. It’s a much more active and interesting place than we thought and we should explore that,” NASA scientist Nathan Williams said.
12.Which point of view about the moon may the writer agree to?
A.It stays the same as before. B.It is becoming lightly smaller.
C.It is getting older and older. D.It has passed away.
13.What can we learn about the moon from the third paragraph?
A.It has become 46 meters fatter due to expanding.
B.It has changed from a grape into a raisin in recent years.
C.It quakes even at seven on the Richter scale.
D.It has a hot core and releases energy during expanding.
14.Who thinks that we needn’t worry about the moon?
A.Zhang Ruoxu. B.Thomas Watters.
C.Nathan Williams. D.The journalist.
15.What does Nathan Williams think of the moon?
A.It is a dead and boring place. B.It has lots of faults on the surface.
C.It is valuable to do more science. D.It isn’t a place where we can live.
二、七選五
Animals are living creatures and most of us often forget about this. Although they can’t speak our language, they can understand us. But some people treat them badly. Being stronger than them doesn’t mean that humans have the right to treat them badly. 16 So they need you to help them. You don’t have to spend money, though. Here are a few ways you can contribute to animal welfare.
Volunteer at the local animal shelters
If you can’t give money to animal shelters, you can visit a local animal shelter and offer your help. 17 You can do the simplest things such as feeding animals or taking dogs for a walk.
Report any form of animal abuse
If you know someone hits their pets to death or doesn’t feed them for weeks, report abuse. No one has the right to abuse animals or leave them hungry or sick. Don’t keep silent. 18 This way, you may save the lives of those poor animals.
19
It is one of the easiest ways to reduce the demand for animal products. While meat tastes delicious, think of how one animal is killed so that you can eat that steak.
Stop buying items that contain animal products
Break a habit of buying things that contain animal products. Many beauty items, especially face creams, lotions and lipsticks, contain animal products. So be sure you don’t buy them. 20
Animals deserve to live their lives free from abuse, pain and suffering. They are sensitive, emotional, and intelligent. They are living creatures that need our help. Don’t neglect them.
A.Have a plant-based diet.
B.Feed wild animals and birds.
C.Let others know how that person treats animals.
D.You don’t have to have any special skills to help animals.
E.Sometimes these little creatures can’t help themselves.
F.Everyone should avoid anything that includes leather, silk or fur.
G.It’s also important that you teach your children to be kind to animals.
