A Massachusetts high school has been unable to turn off its smart lights system since August of 2021 when the software (軟件) running failed.
When Minnechaug Regional High School had a smart lights system installed(安裝) years ago,the goal was to save money and energy. No one ever imagined that one day,the 7,000 lights would have been running continuously at full brightness since mid-2021,wasting money greatly. There seems to be no way to turn off the lights at this time.
"We know this is costing an amazing amount of money," Aaron Osborne,an official at the Hampden-Wilbraham Regional School District, told NBC News. "And we have been doing everything we can to get this problem solved."
Unfortunately, solving the problem is harder than it sounds. The company that installed the smart lighting system didn't think to include physical light switches(開關(guān)),using software to control all the 7,000 lights instead. When that software failed in August 2021,the school connected the company that had installed it,only to learn that there wasn't much to be done.
5th Light, the company that had installed the system, changed hands several times and is now owned by another company called Reflex Lighting. The only way to solve the problem was to replace(更換) the hardware.
Mainly because of supply chain(供應(yīng)鏈) problems in China caused by the COVID-19,getting the parts, required to finally turnoff the 7,000 lights is very challenging. The repairs should have been carried out in early 2022,but they were put of fall through the year. Now,the lighting company says that it received all the necessary replacement parts and the lights will finally be turned off next month.
It's hard to judge how much money it cost to keep them running non-stop for 17 months.Paul Must one, president of the Reflex Lighting Group, told reporters that the problem will finally be fixed next month.

My teachers discovered my paper-thin,worn-out clothes,my bad body smell, the countless hurts and burns, and why I hunted for food from dustbins. My second-grade teacher,Ms.Moss, asked the headmaster for help. The next morning,my mother,an alcoholic(酒鬼),and the headmaster had a private meeting. Then Ms.Moss lost her job and I never saw her again.

After a round of goodbyes, with tears running down my face,I promised I'd never forget them and do my best to make them proud someday.
On March 5,1993,I returned to Thomas Edison Elementary and presented my teachers with my first book,A Child Called "It".I looked at them, tears running down their faces, and said, "As a child I learned that teachers have but one goal:to somehow make a difference in a child's life.My four teachers, school nurse and headmaster risked their jobs to save the life of a child called "it".I cannot, will not forget their courage and belief.Twenty years ago,I promised to my teachers. And tonight I renew(重申) my promise."

    31. Many think the word emoji comes from emotion. In fact,it's from the Japanese for pictures, plus letter,or character.
In the 1990s,the Japanese mobile phone operator DoCoMo tacked a heart pictograph(圖畫文字) on to a cheap pager(傳呼機(jī)),which was a great success with teenagers.
Kurita led the team at DoCoMo that designed a set of 176 pixelated (像素化的) characters inspired by basic concepts of things like weather, food, and feelings. They were called emoji. The first set of emoji launched on DoCoMo phones in 1999.
Other Japanese companies quickly followed DoCoMo's lead and developed their own versions of emoji.Since then, emoji have exploded.
Emoji have been available outside of Japan since the mid-2000s through separate apps, which let users copy and paste the icons into text messages and emails. An emoji keyboard was added to Apple iPhones by 2011.
Today, emoji are part of our everyday vocabulary. However, emoji isn't language and it isn't ruining language.
