Camden was four years old. Just like what you can expect with a kid at his age, he’ s quite curious and cheerful. However, things started to change one day. He was no longer playing with the other kids in the kindergarten, keeping to himself in the corner. It is unusual for a child to switch personalities in just a matter of days. His teacher decided to get to the bottom of this.
After taking him away from the classroom, the small child admitted having some problems at home. Nancy felt that she needed to contact his father to address her worries. After a phone conversation, Nancy got informed of what she wanted to know. Darreld, Camden’s father, was seriously unwell because his kidneys were becoming weaker by the day and barely operating at 20%, about which his small son, Camden, became concerned.
A youngster cannot live happy without their parent. Nancy had promised her pupil to do everything she could to make things better for them, and she meant it. Nancy was determined to solve the problem once and for all.
Nancy received confirmation that she was a perfect candidate when she received the results of her hospital tests. Darreld’ s relatives and friends had previously been tested to check whether they were a match. Unfortunately, none of them were. Darreld was beginning to lose hope until Nancy made her offer.
To ease Nancy’s loved ones’ worries, the greatest surgeons in Iowa did the kidney removal, because they knew she would be experiencing a risky treatment that only the best in the field could manage. The operation succeeded! Both he and Nancy were expected to recover completely.
Camden was maybe the most affected by his father’ s plight, but now that Darreld is well again, as a result, the small kid has changed back to be happy and active. Camden promises to be Nancy’ s best pupil ever.
24.Why did Camden draw his teacher’ s attention?
A.Because he was badly ill.
B.Because he happened to be the teacher’ s neighbor.
C.Because he showed no interest in her class.
D.Because he suddenly changed too much in character.
25.What made Camden feel low?
A.His father’ s bad health condition.
B.His poor presentation in class.
C.That his classmates kept a distance from him.
D.That his father’s farm failed to grow crops.
26.What made Darreld hopeless before Nancy came to his aid?
A.His families refused to help him.
B.There was little chance to find a matched organ.
C.He was unable to support a large family.
D.Camden didn’t live up to his expectation.
27.Which can best explain the underlined word in the last paragraph?

About 20 years ago, some 15,000 red pandas wandered the treetops of the Himalaya forests in South Asia. But with the large number of people entering their habitats, these shy and solitary (獨處的) creatures can’t meet each other and reproduce. Now the population has declined by more than 50 percent.
To save the red pandas here, Lama and his research team need to know which parts of the forests the remaining pandas are living in. That’s where the tracking devices come in. “Mapping the path they travel will let us know which areas of the forest need to be reforested to connect the most red pandas to one another,” Lama says.
Because red pandas can be hard to spot and catch, no one had ever used GPS collars to study them in the wild. But Lama and his team had a great plan. They first would make sure the animals would be comfortable wearing the collars. So, they tested the collars on two red pandas in a local zoo. “We convinced them to let us measure their necks and fit them with the collars by letting them choose a reward — grapes, apples, or bananas.” Lama says.
Then came the next challenge: catching red pandas. Once they spotted a red panda, a team of vets set up a tall, fence-like tarp (油布) around the base of the tree with a box trap at the bottom. That way when the red panda climbed down the tree surrounded by the tarp, it had no choice but to enter the trap. It was then quickly controlled, collared and released.
From September to December 2019, the team trapped 10 red pandas — six females and four males. Their collars recorded their location every two hours and sent the information to researchers once a day. Over the next year, the team tracked the red pandas’ movements so that they identified where to plant new forests and helped red pandas meet more easily.
28.What has led to the smaller number of red pandas in South Asia?
A.Their normal lives are badly disturbed.
B.They aren’t adapted to living in groups.
C.Their ability to reproduce is weakened.
D.They try to avoid meeting each other.
29.Why did the research team track the movements of red pandas?
A.To study their living behaviors.
B.To protect them from hunters.
C.To know where to plant forests.
D.To find if they can often meet.
30.How did the research team convince red pandas to wear collars?
A.By offering them treats. B.By using traps.
C.By setting tarps. D.By measuring their necks.
31.What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.The research on red pandas’ reproduction.
B.The clever way to keep track of red pandas.
C.The shrinking population of red pandas.
D.The way of building habitats for red pandas.

When a friend comes to you after a stressful day, how do you comfort him? Do you let him complain? Do you pour him a glass of coffee? Those could work. But a new study finds that a very effective technique is also simple and easy—hugging.
“Individuals who reported noticing the availability of a network of supportive individuals tend to show better adaptation when faced with stress. But just because you have a support network does not mean that you absolutely feel that support,” said Michael Murphy, a psychology expert at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He wanted to know if people who received hugs regularly could handle anxiety and stress better.
So Murphy and his team interviewed 404 men and women every evening for two weeks. During these interviews, the participants were asked a simple yes or no question—whether somebody had hugged them that day—and a simple yes or no question of whether they had experienced conflict with somebody that day. They also were asked to respond to questions about negative and positive mood states.
And the researchers found that people who experienced a conflict were not as negatively affected if they received a hug that day as participants who experienced conflict and didn’t get a hug. And they were also found not to carry the negative effect to the next day, while those who did not receive one would. The findings are in PLOS ONE.
Murphy does include this warning: “So our findings should not be taken as evidence that people should just start hugging anyone and everyone who seems upset. A hug from one boss at work or a stranger on the street could be viewed as neither agreeable nor positive.”
32.Why does the writer write the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic of the text. B.To tell the background information.
C.To show the importance of a hug. D.To make a summary of the text.
33.The aim of the researchers interviewing those people is to ______.
A.find out causes of their conflicts B.a(chǎn)sk for advice on relieving stress
C.test the influence of hugging D.seek ways to comfort troubled people
34.What is one of the results of the study?
A.People not receiving a hug are affected less negatively than those with a hug.
B.People receiving a hug will get better immediately from the conflict.
C.People not receiving a hug stop being affected by the conflict the next day.
D.People receiving a hug are less affected by the conflict than those with no hug.
35.What do Murphy’s words warn in the end?
A.The interview results prove their findings.
B.There are some limitations of their findings.
C.People should hug others regularly and actively.
D.A boss should comfort workers by hugging.

While waiting to pick up a friend at the airport in Portland, Oregon, I had one of those life-changing experiences that you hear other people talk about — the kind that sneaks up on you unexpectedly. This one occurred a mere two feet away from me.
Locating my friend among the passengers, I noticed a man coming toward me carrying two light bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family. First he motioned to his youngest son (maybe six years old) as he laid down his bags. They gave each other a long, loving hug. As they separated enough to look in each other’s face, I heard the father say, “It’s so good to see you, son. I missed you so much!” His son smiled somewhat shyly, and replied softly, “Me, too, Dad!”
While this was happening, a baby girl (perhaps one or one-and-a-half) was squirming excitedly in her mother’s arms, never once taking her little eyes off the wonderful sight of her returning father. The man said, “Hi, baby girl!” as he gently took the child from her mother. He quickly kissed her face all over and then held her close to his chest while rocking her from side to side. The little girl instantly relaxed and simply laid her head on his shoulder, motionless in pure contentment.
After several moments, he handed his daughter to his oldest son and declared, “I’ve saved the best for last!” and proceeded to give his wife the longest, most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. He gazed into her eyes for several seconds and then silently mouthed. “I love you so much!” They stared at each other’s eyes, beaming big smiles at one another, while holding both hands.

One of the best-known stories in English history is that of King Alfred and the cakes. Children are taught the story in which Alfred was on the run from soldiers who were invading his country from Denmark and Norway. Alfred hid in the house of a poor woman. She asked him to watch her cakes being baked by the fire. Alfred was thinking about his problems while he was watching the cakes. So he let the cakes burn and was shouted at by the angry poor woman. No one knows if the story is really true. Certainly, Alfred was the king of parts of England from 871 to 899 and he did have to fight off the armies that entered his country. Maybe the poor woman would not know how important he was. In those days, news did not always travel to places far away. But whether the story is true or false, it is a good way of helping young people take an interest in the very rich history of their country.

根據(jù)第二段中“Darreld, Camden’s father, was seriously unwell because his kidneys were becoming weaker by the day and barely operating at 20%, about which his small son, Camden, became concerned.”(卡姆登的父親達(dá)雷爾德身體非常不適,因為他的腎臟一天比一天衰弱,只能正常運轉(zhuǎn)20%,這讓他年幼的兒子卡姆登很擔(dān)心。) 故選A項。
根據(jù)第四段中“Darreld’ s relatives and friends had previously been tested to check whether they were a match. Unfortunately, none of them were. Darreld was beginning to lose hope until Nancy made her offer.”(達(dá)雷爾德的親戚和朋友此前曾接受過測試,以確定他們是否匹配。
根據(jù)最后一段“but now that Darreld is well again, as a result, the small kid has changed back to be happy and active.”(但現(xiàn)在達(dá)雷爾德恢復(fù)了健康,結(jié)果,這個小男孩又變回了快樂和活躍。)
28.A 29.C 30.A 31.B
根據(jù)第一段中“But with the large number of people entering their habitats, these shy and solitary(獨處的) creatures can’t meet each other and reproduce.(但隨著大量的人進(jìn)入它們的棲息地,這些害羞和孤獨的生物無法相遇和繁殖)”可知,南亞紅熊貓的正常生活被嚴(yán)重干擾導(dǎo)致了該物種數(shù)量下降。故選A項。
根據(jù)第二段中“To save the red pandas here, Lama and his research team need to know which parts of the forests the remaining pandas are living in. That’s where the tracking devices come in.(為了拯救這里的小熊貓,Lama和他的研究團(tuán)隊需要知道剩下的熊貓生活在森林的哪些部分。這就是追蹤設(shè)備的作用)”及最后一段中“Over the next year, the team tracked the red pandas’ movements so that they identified where to plant new forests and helped red pandas meet more easily.(在接下來的一年里,研究小組跟蹤了小熊貓的活動,以便他們確定在哪里種植新森林,并幫助小熊貓更容易見面)”可知,研究人員追蹤小熊貓是為了確定應(yīng)該在哪里種植森林。故選C項。

根據(jù)文章內(nèi)容,結(jié)合最后一段中“Over the next year, the team tracked the red pandas’ movements so that they identified where to plant new forests and helped red pandas meet more easily.(在接下來的一年里,研究小組跟蹤了小熊貓的活動,以便他們確定在哪里種植新森林,并幫助小熊貓更容易見面)”可知,本文主要介紹Lama及其研究團(tuán)隊通過給紅熊貓佩戴頸圈的方式追蹤紅熊貓,以便他們確定應(yīng)該在哪里種植新森林,故B項“追蹤紅熊貓的聰明辦法”能夠概括本文大意。故選B項。

根據(jù)最后一段中 “ ‘So our findings should not be taken as evidence that people should just start hugging anyone and everyone who seems upset. A hug from one boss at work or a stranger on the street could be viewed as neither agreeable nor positive.’

Dear Mr. Parker.
An activity called Telling Chinese Stories in English will be held in our school. I feel privileged to invite you to our activity for some instructions. As it is the first time we have organized the activity, we don’t know about the steps to make it a success. Will you please go to our teaching building 2 at 9 this Saturday morning to tell us how and where to start the activity? Besides, will you give us some suggestions on what we should avoid in writing the stories?
I sincerely hope you can accept my invitation.
Yours,
Li Hua

For an instant they reminded me of newlyweds, but I knew by the age of their kids that they couldn’t possibly be. I puzzled about it for a moment then realized how totally focused I was on the wonderful display of unconditional love not more than an arm’s length away from me. I suddenly felt uncomfortable, as if I was invading something sacred, but was amazed to hear my own voice nervously ask, “Wow! How long have you two been married?
“Married twelve years.” he replied, without breaking his gaze from his lovely wife’s face. “Well, how long have you been away?” I asked. The man finally turned and looked at me, still beaming his joyous smile. “Two whole days!” I was stunned. “I hope my marriage is still that passionate after twelve years!” The man suddenly stopped smiling. He looked me straight in the eye and told me something that left me a different person. “Don’t hope, friend… decide!”
