The Colorado 8-year-old will set out Tuesday to become the youngest person to reach the top of El Capitan in California’s Yosemite National Park. He will climb the rock face with the help of the hanging ropes. The journey is expected to take four days “of hanging from your fingers or hanging from your anchors(錨),”??Sam’s dad Joe Baker told CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield on Sunday. They’ll camp one night on the top of El Capitan.
Sam and Joe Baker will climb in a four-person team. It is a Class 5 climb, the highest and most difficult of classifications. The routes are for expert climbers who train regularly and have a lot of natural ability.
“Sam has been training to take on El Capitan every day for the last at least 18 months,” his father said. In addition to physical training, planning how much equipment-including 200 pounds of water-to take for the daylong hike is among the challenges. “You can’t just turn on the water,” Joe said. “You have to carry it with you.”
While making it to the top of El Capitan would set records, that’s not Sam’s motivation for attempting the climb. “I’m most excited to climb with Daddy,” Sam told CNN.
Hanging from the rock face thousands of feet in the air, the climbers will dine on lasagna (意面) they cook from little packets on a gas stove. Sam is also planning a movie night while pausing from the side of the rock. In addition to his climbing accomplishments, Sam is getting really good at chess, so a travel chess set will be along for the climb too.
Aside from the lasagna, watching a movie and playing chess, Sam said “getting to the top” is his favorite part of climbing.
Joe and his wife fell in love while climbing, and Sam did well in a climbing harness (背帶) “before he could walk”. When he was 6, Sam took on Lost Arrow Spire, a three-pitch climb that starts 2, 500 feet above Yosemite Valley. Only one other 6-year-old-world-class professional climber Tommy Caldwell, had ever done it.
4.What motivated Sam to climb El Capitan?
A.Companionship of his father. B.Appealing awards for winning.
C.High requirements for climbing. D.Encouragement from teammates.
5.What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.Sam’s advantages as a climber.
B.Difficulties Sam will encounter.
C.Sam’s hobbies besides climbing.
D.Things Sam will do while climbing.
6.What can be inferred from the text?
A.Playing games is what Sam like best.
B.Sam Baker was born into a climbing family.
C.The team has successfully accomplished the climbing.
D.Sam Baker was the only child finishing Lost Arrow Spire.
7.What kind of a boy is Sam?
A.Polite and modest. B.Brave and dependent.
C.Gifted and hard-working. D.Naughty and cooperative.
In recent times, with the advent of electric cars, the idea to fuel them with solar energy also gained momentum. Electric cars—even though they run on electricity and don’t use fossil fuels—are still NOT GREEN! People suffer from the misconception that not using fossil fuel means “green” which is kind of absurd, considering the electricity we use is generated by burning the very same fuels!
However, what if your car had solar panels that could charge it? Now that would indeed be a green machine! Basically, as much as we would like to incorporate this energy source into our car, the efficiency of the currently used solar panels is subject to the fulfillment of different criteria.
Firstly, solar panels occupy a large amount of area. An average car has an area of 10-25 sq. ft. on the roof. which can generate between 50-150 W under ideal conditions. This is hardly enough power to illuminate a light bulb! Also, moderate sunny temperature needs to be ideal, as extremely high temperatures can reduce the efficiency of the solar panels. Cars must work in all weather conditions, so if a solar panel limits the car’s functionality, it becomes practically useless. More importantly, the cost of the panels and development required to power the electronics using the sun’s energy outweighs the benefits that solar panels provide.
Most cars today that have solar roofs, use the solar energy to power only a few basic functions of the car. While there is still time before we will be able to drive cars fully powered by solar energy, there are some alternatives, such as solar power stations, which are being designed to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels for electricity.
Solar-powered vehicles are surely the future, but not the near future. As the cost of solar panels continues to fall and their efficiency increases, things will begin to look much “brighter” for this alternative and sustainable option!
8.Why aren’t electric cars environmentally friendly?
A.They won’t work as well as the common cars.
B.They are not powered by solar energy.
C.They run on electricity produced by burning fuels.
D.They cause more pollution to the world.
9.What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A.Temperatures have little effect on solar panels.
B.Powering the electronics costs little.
C.A car’s roof generates enough power to light a bulb.
D.The performance of current solar panels depends on various factors.
10.What can we infer about solar energy in the car industry?
A.Most cars have solar roofs.
B.Cars can be currently powered from solar power stations.
C.Cars partly powered by solar energy are on the road.
D.Solar cars will soon be available.
11.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.What do solar cars look like?
B.Why don’t we power the car with solar energy?
C.How do solar cars work?

Schoolchildren across the United Kingdom will learn how to fend off loneliness. In January, British Prime Minister Theresa May appointed the first “minister of loneliness”. This week, her administration released an 84-page plan detailing the actions it will take to prevent loneliness. Starting in primary school, students will have lessons in “relationships education”.
The Brigham Young University psychologist Julianne Holt-Lunstad, one of the foremost scholars on loneliness in the United States, warns that the U.S.has a significant loneliness problem of its own and that schools desperately need to follow the U.K.’s lead and include preventive measures into their lessons.
Indeed, according to a recent report by the health-care company Cigna, nearly half of adults in the U.S. reported feeling alone. Marriage rates and religious-participation rates are also dropping and both are risk factors for social isolation and loneliness. The prevalence (普遍) of loneliness seems to be especially acute among young adults. One study found that Americans aged 21 to 30 reported feeling lonely twice as many days as adults aged 50 to 70. Studies suggest loneliness results in a variety of health issues, such as decreased immunity to viral infections, poor sleep, and cardiovascular (心血管的) issues.
The ideal school curriculum (課程) for teaching loneliness prevention would target social isolation as well as the cognitive processes that make people feel lonely. “Recognizing that it’s something that we need to take seriously for our health is a primary and critical step,” Holt- Lunstad says. She advocates for a sort of “social education” that would be put into existing health-education curriculum to teach students how to build and maintain friendships and relationships.
12.How does Holt-Lunstad find the loneliness problem in the United States?
A.It is not serious and easy to deal with.
B.It is serious and needs measures to control.
C.It is not as serious as in the United Kingdom.
D.It is more serious than it is in the United Kingdom.
13.What does the underlined word “acute” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Popular. B.Average. C.Severe. D.Frequent.
14.What result may loneliness cause?
A.Poor sleep. B.Higher religious-participation rates.
C.Lower marriage rates. D.Increased immunity to viral infections.
15.What is the best title for the text?
A.Finding the Cause of Loneliness.
B.Learning to Fight Loneliness at School.
C.Loneliness — the Cause of Many Health Problems.
D.Loneliness — a Serious Problem in Modern Society.
二、七選五
Have you ever complained that there just aren’t enough hours in a day? Do you usually find yourself falling short on time in completing assigned tasks? 16 No matter how hard I tried, tasks just kept piling up towards the end every day and it became extremely difficult to stay productive. In spite of trying all kinds of free and paid to-do apps, nothing helped.
That didn’t change until I discovered the time management technique called Time Blocking. Since then, I have been able to transform my daily schedule for the better with the help of Time Blocking. 17
It is a simple time management technique where you schedule your day such that it is divided into time blocks that are dedicated to specific tasks or groups of tasks. 18 Imagine that you have a dozen or so tasks that you want to finish working on tomorrow. You open your to-do app of choice and neatly list down everything that you plan to do, and then plot some important meetings and reminders in your calendar app. 19 The more specific you are about the task, the more focused and productive you will be and thus, more productive.
20 It not only makes your to-do list more manageable, but also it gives you more control over your day and helps you prioritize your tasks. It also improves your focus and helps get rid of procrastination(拖延癥), as it allows you to focus on one project at a time.
A.So what is it exactly?
B.Is everyone interested in it?
C.I used to be in the same boat.
D.The benefits of Time Blocking are substantial.
E.Let’s further explain the concept in another way.
F.You’ll encounter countless questions like these in your life.
G.You’ll need to be very specific about the time and what you’re planning to do.

I was backpacking in Panama over Christmas in 2018, and planned to climb Volcán Barú. It is one of the only places on earth from where you can see the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans at the same time.
I set off before sunrise. It was a bit cold, so I had pulled on leggings under my trousers. I’ve always felt safe travelling as a solo (單獨(dú)) woman. I love the freedom. When I got to the base at 7 am, the ranger (護(hù)林員) was unwilling to let me go alone, but relented (緩和) because an American couple were behind me.
The first part of the climb was beautiful. I walked for an hour and had reached a fair height. The views were impressive, so I stopped to take a photograph. Suddenly I heard violent barking behind me.
I turned and saw two dogs running aggressively towards me. I could see their teeth looked sharp, and they looked angry. There was nowhere for me to run. I tried to keep calm, but my heart was racing. They stopped a dozen feet from where I stood and kept barking. I knew they could move fast, so I didn’t want to try to outrun them.
I kept walking, saying, “Good dog, calm down,” as evenly as possible. But I was terrified. Then one dashed up and sunk his teeth into my leg below the knee. I was shocked. He held on for a few seconds. The pain took my breath away as I felt his fangs (犬牙) in my flesh. I considered bending down to get a rock to fight him off, but was nervous in case he went for my neck or the other one launched at me.
I tried to keep walking, and he finally let go. Then he was behind me, growling (嗥叫). I kept going, my body shaking, until after about 15 minutes I was out of their sight.
When I thought it was safe, I stopped.

When I thought it was safe, I stopped. I rolled up my trousers and saw blood. The leggings had acted as a bit of a barrier but there were fang marks on the left side of my knee, seeping blood. I managed to stop the bleeding and cleaned up as best as I could with tissues from my bag. I couldn’t walk up the volcano, but I couldn’t go back down either because I’d have to pass them again. I imagined being stuck by myself all night. I was really scared. Suddenly I heard rustling and froze.
A pickup truck appeared, driven by the ranger. I must have been as white as a sheet. He told me to get in. The relief was unbelievable. A few minutes later, we saw the dogs in the road where I’d left them. As we drove past, they jumped up at the truck, growling. When we finally reached the gate, I saw the American couple. I learned it was they who told the ranger what had happened. I could never thank them enough for what they did for me. They saved my life!
