It was our turn to open our presents this particular Christmas morning. The living room was
already covered with torn (撕開(kāi)的) wrapping paper. Obviously, the children could hardly wait to
discover the hidden treasures, which they had expected for nearly a month. Now we adults sat around
the room with our presents at our feet, slowly removing the paper, trying to maintain our dignity in
front of the children.
My wife Brenda, and her family have a tradition of getting each other gag (惡作劇) gifts. This
always makes me a bit uneasy at Christmas or my birthday, never knowing what embarrassment lies
waiting for me under the wrapping paper.
Recently, my six-year-old daughter Christy seemed to busy herself with something while I was
playing computer video flight games. Now she was standing directly in front of me. The excitement

of the moment just shone across her face. Finally, I came to the last gift and with my natural Sherlock
Holmes ability, I concluded that this had to be the gag gift. With everyone looking on, I decided to go
ahead and get it over with—just let them have their laugh—and I tore the paper and there it was…a
toy airplane about two inches long. Our holiday guests started giggling (咯咯笑) to themselves as I
looked up to my wife with an unpleasant smile on my face, saying, "A toy airplane? Are you kidding
me?"
Brenda gave me the look—that look that always tells me I have just said something wrong and
should have given it a second thought. I had failed to look at the name tag (標(biāo)簽) before I opened the
present to see who it was from. As I picked up the paper from the floor and read the name tag, my
heart sank. On the tag were the letters that read, "To dad, Love Christy."
51. The author feels uneasy at Christmas or on his birthday because _____.
A. he has to spend a lot on presents
B. the wrapping paper is easily torn
C. he feels embarrassed being with his wife's family
D. he is afraid of the unknown gag gifts
52. The excited look on Christy's face showed _____.
A. she was eager to express love to Dad
B. she was thrilled on seeing her gift from her parents
C. she was getting a load of gag gifts
D. she was interested in her video flight games
53. What's the author's feeling on opening the last gift?
A. Regretful. B. Unpleased. C. Moved. D. Excited.
54. The author's heart sank because _____.
A. his wife was unhappy with what he had said
B. holiday guests giggled on the present
C. the gift was not what he had expected
D .his words could have hurt his daughter's feeling
55. What's the best title of the passage?
A. Gag gifts: a family tradition
B. A toy airplane: joy at Christmas
C. A hidden treasure: love from dear daughter
D. A name tag: Christmas present

Israeli company Watergen has produced an appliance that can generate clean, drinkable water out
of air. The device, called GENNY, is small enough to be used in a home or office but can generate up
to 30 liters of water a day.
GENNY takes air in and passes it through a filter (過(guò)濾器) to remove dust and dirt. The filter is
powerful enough to work even in areas with high air pollution. The air is directed through GENius, a
heating and cooling process which causes water in the air to condense (凝結(jié)). This water is then
passed through several more filters and minerals are added to improve the flavor of the water. Finally,
the water is stored in a tank where it is continually circulated to keep it fresh. Therefore, the water
produced by GENNY is often of a higher quality than water running through filtration systems
attached to the city's water lines.
The technology of GENius is much better than other technologies that generate water from air. It
produces four to five times more water per kilowatt-hour(千瓦時(shí)). Watergen has other products that
use this same technology on a larger scale, the largest of which can produce up to 5,000 liters of water
per day.
As an added bonus, during the water generation process, GENNY can emit clean air which is
healthier for people to breathe.
At the 2020 Smart home mark of Excellence Awards at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las
Vegas, GENNY was named the Energy Efficient Product of the Year. The award series recognize the
world's top high-tech home products.
As a company, Watergen focuses on dealing with the global water shortage. Last year,
Watergen's large-scale products were donated to authorities in Brazil, Vietnam and India. They also
assisted rescue and recovery efforts during the 2018 California wildfires and provided clean, safe
water for the residents of Texas and Florida in the aftermath of the devastation caused by hurricanes
Harvey and Irma.
Watergen also seeks to help protect the environment by reducing waste generated by plastic
water bottles. People are called upon to put the water from GEENY into reusable bottles so that
plastic ones don't get used and thrown away.
56. What does the author tell us in Paragraph 2?
A.How high quality water is produced.
B.Air will condense through cooling process.
C.Drinkable water can be got directly from air.
D.Polluted water becomes drinkable through filter.
第 7 頁(yè) 共 12 頁(yè)
57. What does GENNY accomplish by adding minerals to the water?
A.It keeps the water fresh.
B.It helps kill harmful bacteria.
C.It makes the water taste better.
D.It satisfies local water regulations.
58. Which of the following can best describe GENius?
A.Time-saving.
B.Energy-efficient.
C.Thought-provoking.
D.Environment-friendly.
59. What does the underlined word "emit" in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Blow away.
B.Cut down.
C.Use up.
D.Give off.
60. What can Watergen do using its large-scale products?
A.Consume plastic waste.
B.Test water quality globally.
C.Respond to natural disasters.
D.Relieve drought in some countries.

Many of us are quick to blame others for how we feel: "He makes me so mad!" or "She really
hurt my feelings." But did someone really "make us angry" or are we feeling the anger in us getting
kicked up in response to the way someone behaved towards us?
The difference between the two is in who the responsible party is for the way we feel. If we
blame others for our feelings, we will eventually feel reasonable at whatever our retaliation (報(bào)復(fù))
may be, and we will explain that it was their fault, not ours. "They were driving me mad."
When we blame others for the way we feel we have in fact given power to others for the state of
our emotional well-being (健康). The truth is, no one controls our feelings but us. If we are finding
that people in our lives really know how to " push our buttons" , then we are not doing a good
enough job at protecting our "buttons". We are the ones leaving our buttons out in the open so that
第 8 頁(yè) 共 12 頁(yè)
other people can "push them". Ultimately, the switch for our buttons is inside us—not on the outside.
While there are some things in life that are clearly out of our control, like the weather or a flight
that's two hours late, how we act and respond to other people's behavior is not among them. Our
responses to others are well within our control.
If someone is "making us" so mad, for example, that we get angry, we are not doing enough to
learn about what drives our anger and how to properly cope with it. My suggestion is taking time
before you get angry, and putting some work into taking an inventory (清單) of the past. An inventory
can show you how much of your past experiences influence your feeling reactions in the current
moment.
When we finally realize that so much of our present feelings and reactions are driven from within
ourselves and our own past experiences, we will be ready to make the changes in our lives that will
better secure our buttons so that they are no longer left out in public for everyone to push at will.
61. What result will appear if we blame others for our emotions?
A.We consider others to be correct.
B.We consider ourselves to be correct.
C.We consider we were driving ourselves mad.
D.We consider they were driving themselves mad.
62. What's the author's attitude towards feelings?
A.We should blame others for the way we feel.
B.We should enable others to control our feelings.
C.We should let others know our daily life clearly.
D.We should control personal feelings ourselves.
63. According to the author, which can always be under our control?
A.The weather conditions.
B.The delay of a flight.
C.Other people's feelings.
D.Our own behavior.
64. Which proverb best suits the author's advice in Paragraph 5?
A.A burden of one's choice is not felt.
B.A friend is easier lost than found.
C.Think twice before acting.
D.A good beginning is half done.
65. What does the underlined phrase "push our buttons" probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Force us to do a good job.
B.Make us angry.
C.Take off our buttons.
D.Let us down.

An 8-minute short video went viral on Chinese social media recently. The video begins with a
man surnamed Zhao, who took his daughter to visit relatives in November 2019. After he finished
eating at a restaurant and was ready to go home, he discovered he couldn’t find his little girl.
As people set out to look for her, someone soon discovered that the girl had fallen down an
abandoned well at the restaurant. Zhao called for help and the local rescue departments as well as
medical workers arrived at the scene in a short time. However, it was discovered that the diameter of
the well was just 0.3 meters, far too small for rescue workers to enter.
Since no adults at the scene were thin enough to enter the well and pull the girl out, rescuers
changed their strategy and brought in four excavators (發(fā)掘機(jī)) to start digging, but they had to move
slowly in order to avoid hurting the young girl.
Wang Qingjun, a member of the rescue team, suggested that the team allow his son, Wang
Mingran, to try and enter the well. After learning the danger that the little girl was in, the teen boy left
for the scene with his mom as quickly as he could.
One detail in the video that moved many netizens ( 網(wǎng) 民 ) is when a rescue worker asks the
younger Wang how old he is, he replies that he is 17 years old; but with a look from his mom, he
immediately changes his answer to 15 and then looks down slightly embarrassed.
After confirming that Wang Mingran was healthy and that he could fit in the well, rescuers
quickly showed him how to correctly tie the rescue rope around the girl and call for help if he gets in
trouble. By that time, the girl had been trapped for four hours.
Wang dressed only in underwear was hung upside down and lowered into the well on that cold
fall night. His first few attempts to rescue the girl failed, but he continued trying and on his sixth
attempt he was able to successfully tie the rope around the girl’s body. After 30 minutes from his first
attempt, the little girl was finally pulled to safety.
66. What did Zhao find after he finished eating? (No more than 4 words)
67. Why did Wang Qingjun suggest asking his son to rescue the little girl? (No more than 15 words)
68. What’s the underlined part “ went viral” in Para. 1 probably mean? (No more than 3 words)
69. What is the main idea of the last paragraph? (No more than 10 words)
70. What do you think of the boy’s action? And why? (No more than 20 words)

Dear Chris:
I’m glad to hear from you. Welcome to China for your study.
Since you have long been interested in Chinese culture, I think Beijing Language and
Culture University is an ideal place for you. The University is known for its language and
culture courses intended for international students. It also features prominent professors and
opening atmosphere.I believe you will have a rewarding experience there.
To be frank, studying for a degree in a different culture is never easy. You’d better learn
some basic Chinese before you come. That way, you may adjust yourself to the life here soon.
If you want to know more about China, feel free to ask me.
Yours,
Lijin
