C 18. B 19. C 20. A
In 1965, Millard and Linda Fuller decided to trade in their lives as millionaires for a simple life helping others. They made this decision after visiting a community-run farm, where everyone worked together and helped each other. The farm inspired the Fullers to help others, and in 1976 they founded Habitat for Humanity, a non-governmental organization that aims to build houses for poor people around the world. Habitat houses are built by volunteers, and the materials used to build the houses are donated. Because the Fullers believed that people should work to improve their own lives, those who receive a house must also help build their homes. In keeping with their belief that people should help themselves, the Fullers wanted to ensure that houses were not simply handed to people in need. Habitat houses are not free, but they are less expensive than other houses because the organization does not profit from them. Today there are volunteers all around the world. If you can join us, you will help Habitat for Humanity build hope around the world.

By my mid-20s, I’d finished my master in psychology, and I was working in Dublin as a health researcher. It was mostly data and statistics work staring at a screen. I was earning more than most of my friends, living the city life, going out at weekends. I had a good pension (養(yǎng)老金) and annual leave but it caused a lot of anxiety and worry.I was really unhappy.
I wanted to get back to feeling passionate about something so I started thinking about the things I used to love. As a child, I’d always been involved in the outdoors, and I used to love hiking but all that had stopped after secondary school. I decided to volunteer with a local youth group and within a month, I’d gone camping with them. I absolutely loved it. It was likes witching on a lightbulb. This was what I’d been missing.
I started taking courses in mountain skills and wilderness first aid, and by August I was working my usual job in the week, and I was a climbing club leader at weekends. I loved connecting with nature, connecting with other people.
Through all this, I learnt about the whole field of nature-based therapies (療法). It was the perfect fit to combine my psychology background with my passion for the outdoors. I began taking courses in wild therapy, forest bathing and ecopsychology. I left my government job and in July 2020 I launched my business Nature Therapy Ireland, which is booming now.
I’d thought I’d always live in a city but last year, I moved to Tipperary to live at the foot of a mountain, surrounded by nature. If I’m feeling stressed, I can step outside in my bare feet and stand on the grass to ground myself. In Dublin, the front door felt like a barrier—I had to have my keys, my phone, my jacket before I could even go out and find a green space. My life now is leading nature connection hikes and forest bathing walks. My salary has halved for the moment but I’ve adjusted. I’ve never looked back.
    24. What did the writer think of her job in Dublin?
    A. Stressful. B. Valueless.
    C. Insecure. D. Demanding.
    25. What does the underlined sentence mean in paragraph 2?
    A. She enjoyed her voluntary work.
    B. She realized what she really loved.
    C. Recalling the past made her happy.
    D. A bright future was in store for her.
    26. What drove the writer to launch her business Nature Therapy Ireland?
    A. Her adventurous experience.
    B. Her leadership and background.
    C. Her connection with other people.
    D. Her major and passion for nature.
    27. Why did the writer compare her life in Dublin with that in Tipperary?
    A. To highlight how boring city life was.
    B. To call on people to get back to nature.
    C. To show her satisfaction with her change.
    D. To indicate how successful her business was.
A 25. B 26. D 27. C

根據(jù)第一段中的“I had a good pension (養(yǎng)老金) and annual leave but it caused a lot of anxiety and worry. I was really unhappy.(我有一個(gè)很好的養(yǎng)老金和年假,但它引起了很多焦慮和擔(dān)憂。我真的很不開心)”可知,作者雖然工作待遇不錯(cuò),但是感到焦慮和擔(dān)心,覺得不開心。由此推知,作者覺得Dublin的工作壓力很大。故選A項(xiàng)。
根據(jù)第二段劃線句子前的“I decided to volunteer with a local youth group and within a month, I’d gone camping with them.
根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段中的“It was the perfect fit to combine my psychology background with my passion for the outdoors. I began taking courses in wild therapy, forest bathing and ecopsychology.(將我的心理學(xué)背景與我對(duì)戶外活動(dòng)的熱情相結(jié)合是完美的選擇。

The term “quiet quitting” went viral last year, describing people who stay in their jobs but mentally take a step back—for example, working the bare minimum and not making their job the center of their lives. Now in 2023, there is a new workplace trend on the horizon, called “quiet hiring”.
Quiet hiring is a strategy used to fill the critical gaps in a company without hiring new employees. One company has a limited amount of talent and needs to make a call about where it’s going to have the best impact. This year it may need to add five more data scientists to its team to meet the strategic goals. As a solution, it may move five employees from another department only for a short time, like data analysts in the human resources and marketing department, into the five open data scientist roles.
In this case, the boss is saying, “We’re going to intentionally deprioritize (降低) support for HR and marketing for the next six months so that we can increase the productivity of our data science team, and we are saying this clearly. Everyone knows this.” The important distinction with quiet hiring is that a company is openly communicating with employees about its priorities and moving employees to areas that serve those priorities, instead of just loading employees with more work or simply hiring more people.
While being assigned to a new role may seem scary, quiet hiring should be beneficial to employees. If you were asked to take on additional responsibilities, it would indicate your value. Meantime you might say, “If it’s not possible to increase my payment, can we make it so that I can work from home five days a week, reducing my commute (通勤) costs? Or,could I work flexible hours, making it easier for me to live the rest of my life?” An individual conversation may be ineffective. If you’re part of a department or team being asked to switch roles, employ that power and approach human resources as a group.
    28. What does the strategy of quiet hiring refer to?
    A. Moving existing staff to new posts. B. Adding more positions.
C Employing new talents secretly. D. Training new employees.
    29. What is the feature of a company’s handling quiet hiring?
    A. Innovations are highly valued. B. Employees are burdened with extra work.
    C. Employees’ shifts are announced beforehand. D. Roles of departments are changed regularly.
    30. What suggestion does the author offer to employees?
    A. Balance between work and life. B. Take on new roles as a team.
    C. Shoulder more duties on work. D. Negotiate on extra jobs.
    31. Which is a suitable title for the text?
    A. Hiring more or less? B. Quiet hiring: An upcoming tendency
    C. Quiet hiring: A workplace debate D. Quiet quitting or quiet hiring?
A 29. C 30. D 31. B

和第三段“In this case, the boss is saying, “We’re going to intentionally deprioritize support for HR and marketing for the next six months so that we can increase the productivity of our data science team, and we are saying this sound and clearly. Everyone knows this.”(在這種情況下,老板說,“我們將有意在未來六個(gè)月優(yōu)先支持人力資源和市場營銷,這樣我們就可以提高數(shù)據(jù)科學(xué)團(tuán)隊(duì)的生產(chǎn)力,我們說得很清楚。大家都知道這一點(diǎn)。”)”可推斷,公司處理安靜招聘的特點(diǎn)是人事變動(dòng)是事先宣布的。故選C。

If you’re part of a department or team being asked to switch roles, employ that power and approach human resources as a group.

On September 26, 2022, NASA successfully completed its Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission by intentionally crashing an unmanned spacecraft into the asteroid (小行星) Dimorphos. The goal was not to destroy the asteroid but to change its orbit. With the successful mission, NASA proved the concept that this technique could keep a potentially dangerous asteroid from crashing into Earth in the future.
Dimorphos is a small asteroid orbiting the larger asteroid Didymos. NASA noted that Dimorphos is not a threat to Earth, but because it passes relatively close to Earth, it was chosen as the target for the test mission.
Although the intended crash should change the asteroid’s position slightly, it will add to a major shift over time. “If you were going to do this for planetary (行星的) defense, you would do it 5, 10, 15, or 20 years in advance for this technique to work,” said NASA program executive Andrea Riley. “This is why we test. We want to do it now rather than when there’s an actual need.”
Asteroids can pose a significant threat to planet Earth. For example, around 66 million years ago, an asteroid around 6 to 9 miles across struck the Earth in what is now the Yucatan Peninsula. The resulting impact was so catastrophic (災(zāi)難性的) that it caused one of the largest extinction events in Earth’s history. Therefore, DART’s success is an important step forward in protecting the planet from potential damage from an asteroid. This shows humans are no longer powerless to prevent this type of natural disaster.
The DART spacecraft was launched by NASA on November 24, 2021. It was accompanied by another craft called LICIA Cube, supplied by the Italian Space Agency, and separated from DART just 15 days before the crash. LICIA Cube remained in orbit around the asteroid and took photographs of the crash and material ejected (彈出) from the asteroid’s surface.
    32. What is the purpose of the DART mission?
    A. To destroy Dimorphos completely. B. To change the orbit of Dimorphos.
    C. To track potentially dangerous asteroids. D. To stop Dimorphos from hitting the Earth.
    33. Why does the author mention the example in paragraph 4?
    A. To prove the significance of DART’s success.
    B. To present the cause of the largest extinction event in history.
    C. To show the necessity of conducting research on natural disasters.
    D. To explain the difficulty of protecting the Earth from asteroid strikes.
    34. What is LICIA Cube intended for?
    A. Collecting rock samples from Dimorphos’s surface.
    B. Increasing the force of crashing the DART.
    C. Providing additional energy for the DART spacecraft.
D Keeping track of the crash test with some photos.
    35. Which of the following can describe the test according to Andrea Riley?
    A. Bark up the wrong tree. B. Rob Peter to pay Paul.
    C. Prepare for a rainy day. D. Better late than never.
B 33. A 34. D 35. C

由此產(chǎn)生的撞擊是災(zāi)難性的,造成了地球歷史上最大的滅絕事件之一)”舉例說明小行星撞擊地球造成的災(zāi)難性的后果,結(jié)合本段最后兩句“Therefore, DART’s success is an important step forward in protecting the planet from potential damage from an asteroid. This shows humans are no longer powerless to prevent this type of natural disaster.

When I left the office for a news assignment that early summer evening, I had absolutely no idea what life held in store for me.
As a young photographer, I was on my way back from a photo shoot. I had shot rolls of films featuring beautiful scenery and scenes of daily life in the countryside. What a fulfilling day! Now what 1 needed was a hot bath and a good rest. 1 couldn’t wait to return home. On the country road, with my camera bag containing my equipment and a phonebook on my back, I rode my motorbike so merrily that all the tiredness disappeared instantly. Suddenly, a big rock hit me from nowhere. All I knew was 1 was no longer on my motorbike.
I was thrown away from my bike and hit the road. Before I lost consciousness, I saw all my things scattered (分散的), my helmet (頭盔) lying at a distance. Hours, maybe days later, I opened my eyes. 1 realized I was on a hospital bed and later learnt that I had been shifted to the ward after7 days in the ICU. The crash was so severe that my head had been injured seriously, leading to other terrible conditions. Although I survived, there were a series of surgeries needed before I could fully recover—a reconstruction of the knees, my broken right wrist to be fixed and an operation on my nose.
I had no relatives in Delhi as I lived alone. After my accident, some warm-hearted strangers donated blood and resources to help me survive, which made me really touched. But every time I tried to piece together that horrible Tuesday, I felt like there remained some missing puzzles. Who discovered and saved me? How was I sent to the hospital? Where can I find my hero? Such questions bothered me until one day Amy, who was the first to learn of my accident came to see me when visits were allowed.

Seeing Amy arrived, the couple 1eft before further communication. The questions weighing on my mind were answered. Then Amy showed me their number. (75 words)
I dialed the couple's number immediately, hoping to thank them in person. They arrived soon. Before I could utter any words of gratitude, they handed me some photos, “We found a roll of film at the scene and had it developed for you.” In tears, I thanked them for everything they’d done. They patted my back, saying it was the least they could do when a life had to be saved. That Tuesday became a dateline of my life and I fully felt the kindness of Delhi. (75 words)
