A soccer player, Carson Pickett, was born without a left forearm. She didn’t have a role model when she was growing up. There was no one who looked like her to look up to, she said.
When she met 2-year-old Joseph Salvatore, she became the role model that she always wanted. Joseph was born without a left forearm as well, just like her. That has given Pickett and the little boy a special relationship.
“Truly within five minutes of meeting him, we had a connection,” Pickett said. That surprised her because Joseph was so young. “It was fantastic to me that it felt like he realized why we were connected,” she said.
Pickett met Joseph for the first time in April after a match. At that time, the player welcomed Joseph and showed him her arm. He raised his with a bright smile. Then, both of them were excited and felt like they were old friends.
Joseph’s mother, Colleen Salvatore, took the picture, which caught this happy and meaningful moment. She put it on the Internet and the photo quickly went hot.
Joseph’s parents have said that their son sees himself in this kind soccer player. Pickett said it went both ways. “I know I might be seen as his role model, but he’s also mine,” Pickett said. Joseph understands her “in a way other people can’t,” she said. “It’s just a gift and pictures mean a lot,” Pickett went on, “Hopefully when he gets older, he can see that and feel even more of what it means.”
Now, she wants Joseph and others like him to know one thing. The lesson is “Even if people see you as different, you should have confidence and do what you think it is right.”

You might like to listen to music while studying. What kind of music is your favorite? An experiment done with British workers found that listening to classical music at work can improve one’s efficiency (效率) by 15%. A study of 2,000 British workers found that half of them often listen to music on the job. Some of their bosses encourage them to do so, while others are against it, believing it hurts their work.
British scientist Becky Spelman did an experiment to find out if background music hurts or improves efficiency. In the study, four office workers were asked to copy two 600-word sets of passages. The group worked on the first set with no music playing and worked on the second set with classical music playing in the background. It took them 20 minutes and 59 seconds to finish the first set. The time for the second set was 17 minutes and 42 seconds.
Classical music can work as a kind of white noise, according to Spelman. “White noise is a mixture of sounds with different frequencies (頻率). It can help people stay cool and calm. In fact, as long as the music has a calm beat, it can help us slow our heartbeat and stay calm. This makes it easier for us to work quickly and carefully,” Spelman said.

根據(jù)“White noise is a mixture of sounds with different frequencies (頻率). It can help people stay cool and calm.” 故選A。
In 2018, Science magazine asked some young scientists what schools should teach students. Most said students should spend less time on facts and have more space for creative activities. As the Internet grows more powerful, students can get knowledge easily. Why should they be required to carry so much of it around in their heads?
Civilizations (文明) develop through forgetting life skills that were once necessary. In the Agricultural (農(nóng)業(yè)的) Age, a farmer could afford to forget hunting skills. When societies industrialized (工業(yè)化的), the knowledge of farming could be safe to forget. Nowadays, smart machines help us get most human knowledge. It seems that we no longer need to remember most things. Does it matter?
Researchers have realized several problems that may happen. For one, human beings have biases (偏見), and smart machines can increase our biases. Many people believe smart machines are necessarily correct, but machines are trained through a repeated testing and scoring process. In the process, human beings still decide on the correct answers.
Another problem is how to get information. When there were no computers, people got knowledge from other people, or went to the library. But today, the Internet gives us the information we need quickly. This can mislead us into thinking that the knowledge we found was part of what we knew. In a new civilization rich in machine intelligence, we can easily get information on the Internet. But depending on it too much suggests possibilities of being harmed easily.
We forget old ways in order to free up time and space for new skills. As long as the knowledge is stored somewhere in our networks, and can be found when we need them, perhaps they’re not really forgotten. Still, as time goes on, without doubt we will become strangers to future people.
34.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to (指代)?
_____________________________
35.Do you think we need to remember most things? Why or why not?
_____________________________
36.What do Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly talk about?
_____________________________
37.What’s the result of using the Internet too much in the passage?
_____________________________
38.What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage?
_____________________________
34.Knowledge.
35.Yes, I do. Because it's the most convenient and safest way to store knowledge. We can use it whenever and wherever we need it without any tool.(主觀表達(dá)題,言之有理即可)。
36.Human beings still decide on the correct answers.
37.It suggests possibilities of being harmed easily.
38.To remind us of the risk of depending on machines to remember.
34.根據(jù)前句“As the Internet grows more powerful, students can get knowledge easily.”
Yes, I do. Because it's the most convenient and safest way to store knowledge. We can use it whenever and wherever we need it without any tool.(主觀表達(dá)題,言之有理即可)。
36.根據(jù)第三段中“Many people believe smart machines are necessarily correct, but machines are trained through a repeated testing and scoring process. In the process, human beings still decide on the correct answers.”和第四段中“But depending on it too much suggests possibilities of being harmed easily.” Human beings still decide on the correct answers.
37.根據(jù)文中“In a new civilization rich in machine intelligence, we can easily get information on the Internet. But depending on it too much suggests possibilities of being harmed easily.” I(lǐng)t suggests possibilities of being harmed easily.
38.根據(jù)文中“In a new civilization rich in machine intelligence, we can easily get information on the Internet. But depending on it too much suggests possibilities of being harmed easily.” To remind us of the risk of depending on machines to remember.

例文:
How Can We Improve Our Reading Ability
Speaking of reading, many people are excited because they can get both knowledge and pleasure from reading. By reading, we can learn lots of information and know history. So how can we improve our reading ability?
To improve our reading ability, first of all, we should keep reading every day. Make it a habit to read every day and choose something you feel important or interesting to read. Read daily-varied things, from blogs to magazines to books of all kinds. Second, while reading, don’t read too quickly. We’d better take notes which we think are important. What’s more, take part in as many interesting reading activities as possible to enrich our knowledge and make more friends.
In all, keep on reading like this and we’ll surely make progress little by little.
