????The idea of climbing Everest disgusted me. The mountain came to represent the opposite of everything that I loved and respected about climbing. What had once been the final mountain climbing goal became the focus of a commercial guiding industry. Over the years, the crowds at Base Camp grew, leaving behind tons of trash. Whenever I was asked whether I'd climbed Everest, my answer was always the same: not interested.
????That's probably where my personal Everest story would have ended, were it not for an old friend and his obsession(念念不忘) with one of the greatest mysteries. In 1999, Thom Pollard began to explore and found the remains of George Mallory, the celebrated British climber who disappeared while attempting to be the first to climb Everest. But Mallory's partner, Sandy Irvine, and the camera he had likely carried were not found. The mountain climbing world has been wondering whether they might have reached the top in 1924.
????Pollard's story moved me. I began to pack for the climb and expected that our advanced equipment would make it manageable, perhaps easy. I was wrong. On the highest point on the planet, I was more tired than I'd ever been in any climbing. Along the way, I continuously tipped my hat, not just to Mallory and Irvine but to anyone who has the drive to push himself or herself up this route. My search was in vain, but I began to reconsider Everest.
????I witnessed many climbers, who were much more than just self-centered tourists. We shared route information, weather forecasts, and family photos—all united around common goals.
????I went to Everest to seek Irvine. But in the end, I found something more difficult to get: the spirit that Irvine and Mallory shared. It was hiding in plain sight, right where it has always been: inside the brave souls who risk so much to follow in storied adventurers' footsteps up Everest.
4. Why did the author hate climbing Everest at first?
A. His climbing goal was changed.
B. He couldn't afford the climbing cost.

D. He attempted to be a celebrated climber.
6. What does the underlined phrase "tipped my hat" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Showed my respect. B. Presented my success.
C. Conveyed my wishes. D. Expressed my satisfaction.
7. What did the author mainly show in the last paragraph?
A. Regret. B. Concern. C. Confidence. D. Admiration.

Depending on the topic, people's opinions can change from moment to moment or last a lifetime. The factors that make one opinion long-lasting and another short-lived,however,are not always clear.
Past studies have shown that opinions based on hard facts and data can remain constant over time, but new research published in the journal Psychological Science finds that opinions based on feelings and emotions can also stand the test of time.
As part of their study, the researchers asked more than 1,000 people to what degree they believed opinions based on feelings or emotional reactions were more stable over time than those based on thinking and reasoned analysis.Only 15% expressed any belief that opinions based on emotion would be more stable over time.
To test the role that emotion plays in forming long-lasting opinions, the researchers conducted seven independent studies involving more than 20,000 participants in various real-world situations.
The first survey, which was conducted the day after Christmas, measured feelings about recently received gifts. The participants were given a list of adjectives to describe their opinions toward their gifts.Adjectives like "worthwhile"were associated with a practical reaction to the gift, while words like "delightful" were more strongly associated with an emotional reaction. One month later, the participants completed a follow-up survey to test the endurance (持久性) of their opinions. The results showed that the stronger the positive emotional reaction, the more likely that opinion remained fixed one month later.
In the final test, participants read one of two messages about an imaginary sea animal. One message contained broad-ranging facts about the animal (low-emotion condition). The other message was about a swimmer's underwater interaction with the animal (high-emotion condition). The participants in the high-emotion condition showed significantly less change in their opinions across time.
"Emotionality is an unrecognized predictor (預(yù)測(cè)因子) of long-lasting opinions," said Andrew Luttrell,a researcher at Ball State University. "These findings are important for understanding why some opinions are so difficult to change as well as how to create opinions that stick."
8. What did the survey of 1000 people show? ______
A. Creating long-lasting opinions was a long process.
B. Opinions based on hard facts could stand the test of time.
C. The role of emotion was not recognized by most of the people.
D. Only a small percentage of people dared to express their opinions.
9. Which statement will lead to a long-lasting opinion according to the research? ______
A. The car is safe. B. The movie is boring.
C. The book is valuable. D. The speech is exciting.
10. Which is true about the findings of the research? ______
A. They have been concluded from hard facts.
B. They have been used to prove other predictors.
C. They help understand the endurance of opinions.
D. They have something to do with creative opinions.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text? ______
A. Emotion Varies Based on Different Facts.
B. Emotion Can Help Clarify the Opinions.
C. Opinions Can Last When Based on Emotion.
D. Opinions Once Formed Are Hard to Change.

????Children grow taller in rural households where their mothers are supported to grow their own food, according to a new research from the University of East Anglia (UEA). The research, which looked at households in some developing countries, showed growing their own food helped mothers to prevent their children from being stunted, wasting away and underweight. Their children's food was more varied, meaning these children had access to different classes of food nutrients.
????The team from UEA analyzed studies that introduced women to home farming in some African and Asian countries. The home farming included growing brightly colored vitamin A-rich fruit and vegetables, and sometimes also included chicken farming. The health of these women's children was assessed over the next year or more, and they did better than children of other women. No studies, however, reported on children's eye health. The researchers concluded that high-quality trials are needed to assess the impact of home food production on nutritional blindness in children, which is caused by an insufficient intake of vitamin A.
????Around 250 million pre-school children are deficient in vitamin A, according to the World Health Organization. Vitamin A deficiency is the main global cause of childhood blindness, which also increases the risk of dying from other childhood diseases and vitamin A plays a significant role in normal immune function. It remains one of the most widespread micronutrient deficiencies globally.
????Mrs Chizoba Bassey led the team conducting the systematic review. She said, "Well-evidenced interventions such as vitamin A supplementation programs should be adopted and expanded to children at greatest risk to prevent nutritional blindness."
????Currently there is not enough evidence of the effects of home gardening on xerophthalmia(干眼癥), night blindness or the death rate in children, but the evidence from the research shows that if women take up home gardening, the risk of being stunted, wasting away and underweight in their children will be reduced. Home farming may help to achieve sustainability in controlling vitamin A deficiency and can assist vitamin A supplementation programs where they are available.
12. What does the new study focus on?
A. Fruit and vegetables suitable for family gardening.
B. The development of farming in Africa and Asia.
C. Rural children's health problems.
D. Benefits of home farming.
13. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?
A. The importance of nutrients.
B. Causes of childhood blindness.
C. Health risks of lack of vitamin A.
D. Ways to improve kids' immune function.
14. Which of the following may Mrs Bassey agree with?
A. Nutritional blindness is preventable.
B. Most of pre-school kids suffer from a nutrient deficiency.
C. Home food production has proved good for children's eyes.
D. Vegetables grown by housewives have higher nutritional value.
15. What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?
A. The urgency of doing further research.
B. The necessity of encouraging home farming.
C. The difficulty in controlling vitamin A deficiency.
D. The relationship between home gardening and xerophthalmia.
A recent research shows benefits to writing about a traumatic (創(chuàng)傷性的) experience or difficult situation in a manner that psychologists refer to as "expressive writing." People who do this, recording their deepest thoughts and feelings, often show improved mental and physical health, says James Parker,PhD,a psychology professor at the University of Texas,Austin.
Expressive writing is a specific technique, and it's different from writing in a journal. (1)
Parker says that hundreds of studies over several decades have looked at the potential benefits of expressive writing and found that it can strengthen the immune system, including for people with illnesses such as cancer,PTSD and depression. (2) And it may even help reduce symptoms of depression and PTSD,and prevent colds and flu.
Expressive writing works because it allows you to make meaning out of a painful experience.Recognizing that something is bothering you is an important first step. (3) And creating a narrative (敘述) gives you a sense of control.
What if you don't consider yourself "a writer"?Don't worry about spelling or grammar, and don't share your writing with anyone. (4) The goal of the exercise is to find meaning in an unsettling event.
(5) Expressive writing isn't a magical panacea (靈丹妙藥).It shouldn't be used as a replacement for other treatments. And people coping with a severe trauma or depression may not find it useful to do on their own, without therapy.
A.But do dig deep into your thoughts and feelings.
B.But there are a few warnings about "expressive writing".
C.Writing can increase someone's acceptance of their experience.
D.Research also found that it can improve mood, sleep, and memory.
E.A journal is a record of experiences or reflections kept regularly for private use.
F.Translating that experience into language forces you to organize your thoughts.
G.The idea is to reflect honestly on a particular challenge, and to do it in short sessions.

41. The idea of low material desire, low consumption and refusing to work, marry and have children, which (1) (conclude) as a "lying down" lifestyle, recently struck a chord (引起共鳴) with many young Chinese who are eager to take pause to breathe in this fast paced and highly (2) (compete) society.
Many millennials(千禧一代) and generation Zs complained to the Global Times that burdens, work stress, and family disputes, financial strains (3) (include),have pushed them "against the wall".They said they hate the "involution(內(nèi)卷)",joking that they would rather give up some of (4) they have than get trapped in an endless competition against peers.

(8) (interesting),the majority of millennials and Gen Zs reached by the Global Times, who claim to be big fans of the lying down philosophy, acknowledged that they only accept a temporary lying down as a short rest.It is true that (9) the great improvement of living conditions, some Chinese youth have partially lost the spirit of hardship and are not willing to bear too much hard work. But in fact, lying down is not entirely comfortable.Young people who lie down always feel guilty about their constant (10) ( lose) of spirits far beyond their reach.

【小題4】what
【小題5】It
【小題6】growing
【小題7】an
【小題8】Interestingly
【小題9】with
【小題10】loss
【解析】(1)is concluded.
(2)competitive.
(3)included.
(4)what.
(5)It. that引導(dǎo)主語從句放在后面,所以用it作形式主語,it is no wonder that..."
(6)growing.
(7)an.
(8)Interestingly.
(9)with.
(10)loss.

(2)which改為whose. 故which改為whose。
(3)an改為a. 故an改為a。
(5)or改為and. 故or改為and。
(6)刪除to. offer sth.to sb. = offer sb.sth." 故刪除to。
(8)over前加is. 分析句子結(jié)構(gòu)可知,though引導(dǎo)讓步狀語從句,且over不能直接做謂語,需要在其前面添加be動(dòng)詞構(gòu)成主系表結(jié)構(gòu),結(jié)合語境可知,句子應(yīng)使用一般現(xiàn)在時(shí),主語the ceremony為單數(shù),be動(dòng)詞應(yīng)用is。故over前加is。
(10)me改為myself. 故me改為myself。
