A young and successful manager was traveling down a neighborhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar (捷豹) . He was watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something.
As his car passed, one child appeared, and a brick smashed(撞擊) into the Jag’s side door. He slammed (砰地關(guān)上) on the brakes and spun the Jag back to the spot from where the brick had been thrown.
He jumped out of the car, grabbed some kid and pushed him up against a parked car, shouting. “What was that all about and who are you? Just what are you doing?”
Building up a head of steam, he went on “That’s a new car and that brick you threw cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?”
“Please, mister, please, I’m sorry. I didn’t know what else to do! pleaded(懇求) the youngster.
“It’s my brother,” he said. “He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can’t lift him up. Sobbing, the boy asked the manager, “Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair?
He’s hurt and he’s too heavy for me.”
Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He lifted the young man back into the wheelchair and took out his handkerchief and wiped the scrapes and cuts, checking to see that everything was going to be okay.
“Thank you, sir. And God bless you,” the grateful child said to him. The man then watched the little boy push his brother to the sidewalk toward their home.
It was a long walk backs to his Jaguar... a long, slow walk. He never did repair the side door. He kept the dent (凹痕) to remind him not to go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention.
Life whispers in your soul and speaks to your heart. Sometimes, when you don’t have the time to listen... Life throws a brick at your head.
It’s your choice: Listen to the whispers of your soul or wait for the brick!
4. Why did the child throw a brick at the Jaguar?
A. To play tricks on the manager B. To make fun of the manager
C. To ask him for help D. To show his dissatisfaction
5. How did the manager feel at first after the brick hit his car?
A. Angry B. Surprised C. Content D. Disappointed
6. Which of the following can best describe the manager?
A. Selfish and lazy B. Caring and warm-hearted
C. Indifferent and stubborn D. Determined and courageous
7. Which of the following can be the best title?
A. A Damaged New Jaguar B. A Boy in Need C. A Helpful Manager D. A Pleading Brick
C 5. A 6. B 7. D

根據(jù)第六段的““It’s my brother,” he said. “He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can’t lift him up. Sobbing, the boy asked the manager, “Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair?(“是我弟弟,”他說(shuō)。“他從輪椅上滾了下來(lái),我抬不起來(lái)。男孩啜泣著對(duì)經(jīng)理說(shuō):“你能幫我把他抬回輪椅上嗎?)”可知,這個(gè)孩子向捷豹車(chē)扔磚頭是為了向他求助,故選C。
【5題詳解】
推理判斷題。根據(jù)第三段的“He jumped out of the car, grabbed some kid and pushed him up against a parked car, shouting(他跳出車(chē)外,抓了個(gè)孩子把他推到一輛停著的車(chē)上,大喊大叫。)”和第四段的“Building up a head of steam, he went on(他怒氣沖沖地繼續(xù)說(shuō))”可知,磚頭砸到經(jīng)理的車(chē)后,他一開(kāi)始是生氣的,故選A。
根據(jù)倒數(shù)第五段的“He lifted the young man back into the wheelchair and took out his handkerchief and wiped the scrapes and cuts, checking to see that everything was going to be okay.(他把年輕人扶回輪椅上,拿出手絹擦拭擦傷和割傷,檢查是否一切正常。)”
通讀全文,根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段的“Life whispers in your soul and speaks to your heart. Sometimes, when you don’t have the time to listen... Life throws a brick at your head.(生活在你的靈魂中低語(yǔ),與你的心靈對(duì)話(huà)。有時(shí)候,當(dāng)你沒(méi)有時(shí)間傾聽(tīng)的時(shí)候……生活向你頭上扔磚頭。)”和最后一段的“It’s your choice: Listen to the whispers of your soul or wait for the brick!(這是你的選擇:傾聽(tīng)你靈魂的低語(yǔ)或等待磚頭!)”

When Max Park (John Cho) is diagnosed with a brain tumour (腫瘤), his doctor gives him two options. He can have an operation to remove it, but the chances of making a full recovery are a paltry 20 per cent, or he can do nothing and be dead within a year. Because Max is a lone parent with a 15-year-old daughter Wally (Mia Isaac), who’s beginning to consider major life choices ― college, travel, boyfriends ― Max decides it’s more responsible to decline the operation. At least a year gives him time to prepare his daughter for the rest of her life without him .
To begin with, Max can’t face telling Wally about his diagnosis, but he starts stage-managing her future straight away. Figuring that now is the time for his daughter to reunite with her mother, who walked out on them when Wally was a baby, he plans a great road trip from their South California home to New Orleans. He tells Wally that he wants her to accompany him to a college reunion―a strange idea, as she points out―but his hidden motive is to put mother and daughter in the same room. He also hopes the long cross-country drive will give them plenty of father-daughter bonding time: something that’s now a limited resource.
For much of its runtime, Don t Make Me Go hits its familiar beats with a steady hand. Wally begins to rebel against her strait-aced (古板的) dad, even stealing out of their motel room one night to party with the locals in a Texan backwater. Max tries a bit too hard to make their road trip meaningful but gradually reveals he’s not so square after all. Back in the day, he was an ambitious rock star who had the talent, but not the courage, to make it big. Director Hannah Marks, who co-wrote and starred in the excellent Gen Z romcom Banana Split, brings a low-key beauty to even the film’s cheesiest moments. As soon as Max and Wally discover a shared love of Iggy Pop’s ‘The Passenger’, you just know he’s going to end up singing it at some point.
Sadly, Marks’ self-restrained approach is undone by an awkward final act that arrives in a moment of narration (解說(shuō)). It’s perhaps no coincidence that screenwriter Vera Herbert has previously written nine episodes of This Is Us, a US drama series that is hardly good at going for the emotional problem. For this reason, Don’t Make Me Go is a strange beast: a film that feels a little predictable until it snaps and stretches credulity to the limit Thankfully, Cho and Isaac’s affecting performances are far better than the writing.
8. What does the underlined word in Para. 1 mean?
A. Refuse. B. Reduce. C. Solve. D. Prevent.
9. Why does Max want Wally to reunite with her mother?
A. Because Wally misses her mother a lot
B. Because Wally begins to rebel against her dad
C. Because he will pass away within a year
D. Because he wants her to accompany him to a college reunion
10. Which of the following might the writer agree with?
A. The plot of the movie is rather creative to us audience
B. The writer speaks highly of Screenwriter Vera Herbert’s writing
C. Cho and Isaac’s performances contribute most to the film’s success
D. Director Hannah Marks is good at dealing with different moments in the film
11. What is the purpose of the writer?
A. To show us the great and deep fatherly love.
B. To tell us the importance of being healthy
C. To introduce us the movie Don’t Make Me go
D. To show us Cho and Isaac’s affecting performances
A 9. C 10. D 11. C

Given the opportunity, plenty of people would probably choose to get rid of stress entirely from their lives. Amazing new findings from the University of Georgia, however, indicate that a little bit of stress can actually be very beneficial to both body and brain.
When we’re stressed, we’re usually forced to deal with unpredictable or tense situations that can eat away at our bodies physically. While these scenarios (設(shè)想) are almost never fun in the moment, they serve to push us out of our comfort zones ― and that can be a good thing for the mind.
Researchers say that low to moderate (適度的) levels of stress appear to promote improved working memory, which refers to short-term information people use to complete everyday tasks. Not surprisingly, study authors stress that these benefits are limited to moderate stress. Once stress levels reach high levels, it can be dangerous to one’s health. “The bad outcomes of stress are pretty clear and not new,” says lead study author Assaf Oshri, an associate professor in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, in a university release.
The research team analyzed a series of MRI scans (核磁共振成像) of over 1,000 people from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds. Results show that people who experienced low to moderate stress levels had increased activity in the parts of their brains involved with working memory. Conversely, those dealing with chronic high levels of stress showed a decline in those same brain areas.
Study subjects were asked questions about how frequently they experienced certain thoughts or feelings. For instance, “In the last month, how often have you been upset because of something that happened unexpectedly?” and “In the last month, how often have you found that you could not deal with all tie things that you had to do?”
Participants’ social networks were also analyzed via a number of different measures. Examples include how they felt about their own ability to handle unexpected events, how satisfied they were that their lives matter and are meaningful, and the availability of friend-based support across their social networks.
To assess working memory, subjects were shown a series of four types of images of things like tools and individuals’ faces. Then, later on they were asked to remember whether they were the same photos they were shown before. Study authors analyzed MRIs showing subjects’ brains as they completed the tasks.
Notably, people who reported high levels of social support from friends and family were better able to deal with low to moderate stress levels in a healthy way .
“You need to have the right resources to be strengthened by misfortune and stress,” Prof. Oshri concludes. “For some people, being exposed to stress is a good thing. But for others, maybe not. It’s possible that you can sand more stress if you have a supportive community or family.”
12. What does underlined word that in Para.2 refer to?
A. Unpredictable or tense situations are not fun in the moment.
B. Unpredictable or tense situations can force us out of comfort zones.
C. Low-to-moderate levels of stress can promote improved working memory.
D. A little bit of stress can be very beneficial to both body and brain.
13. How did the team carry out the research?
A. By comparing experimental data with previous ones.
B. By analyzing participants, medical reports and social networks.
C. By referring to research reports of existing researches.
D. By asking the participants to fill in questionnaires.
14. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Every coin has two sides. B. No sweet without sweat.
C. Time waits for no man. D. One man’s meat is another man’s poison.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. A proper amount of stress can benefit us mentally and physically.
B. It’s confirmed that high levels of stress can do harm to our health.
C. Working memory is an important indicator of our present health.
D. A supportive community or family can help us deal with stress in a healthy way.
B 13. B 14. D 15. A
