North Yungas Road
The Road of Death is the right name given to a road in Bolivia.Hundreds of people die here every year. The major causeof all those accidents is the road. The problem is that it is too narrow and badly maintained while here the traffic is heavier than anywhere else. English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human be-ings can speak it.More than half of the world's books and three quarters of international mail are in Eng-lish. Of all languages,English has the largest vocabulary-perhaps as many as two million words.
However, let's face it:English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger.Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.
We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes(探討它的矛盾),we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.
And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce, and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn't the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese-so one moose, two meese?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are oppo-sites?How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of human beings. That's why, when stars are out, they are visible(能看見(jiàn)的);but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch,I start it;but when I wind up this essay,I end it.
24.According to the passage
A.boxing rings should be round
B.there should be egg in an eggplant
C.pineapples are the apples on the pine tree
D.sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things
25.Which of the following is the correct plural?

A.Beeth.
B.Geese.

26.Which of the following includes two items which have the similar meaning?

A.A wise man and a wise guy.
C.Quite a lot and quite a few.
B.Overlook and oversee.
D.Hot as hell and cold as hell.

27.Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are

A.clever
B.crazy
C.lazy
D.dull

In November 2020,Hurricane Eta made landfall in Central America. The storm caused huge damage from Panama to Florida. Two weeks later,Hurricane lota arrived. It was even more powerful.Heavy rain fell on places that were already flooded.President Juan Orlando Hernandez,of Honduras, said lota would leave the area in tatters.
Scientists say climate change is to blame. They don't know if it's causing more storms, but data seems to show it's causing storms to be stronger and more harmful. James P.Kossin is a climate scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA).He says the increase in greenhouse gas emis-sions(排放)is changing how storms behave."These storms have a human fingerprint on them,”he told TIME for Kids.
As the planet warms,so do its oceans. That's where hurricanes begin.A storm draws its energy from ocean air.Warmer water provides more energy, which means higher winds. It also means heavier rain.In-creased energy is also causing hurricanes to get stronger and faster. In August,Laura changed from a tropi-cal storm to a strong hurricane in about a day. It hit Texas and Louisiana with winds of up to 150 miles per hour.Laura's storm surge-a wall of ocean water mainly caused by a strong wind-reached 17 feet in places. It was among the highest ever recorded in Louisiana.
Hurricanes are also sticking around longer to do more damage.Rising temperatures are slowing down westerly winds, which blow around the planet. That makes storms move more slowly. In 2017,Hurricane Harvey hung around for days, flooding parts of Texas. “That storm was damaging because it didn't move.”Kossin says. “It just sat there. And it rained and rained.”
Reducing greenhouse gases is the first step.Kossin says.“We can stop making it worse. Then we can try our best to adapt to the new climate we're in.”
28.What do the underlined words “in tatters" in the first paragraph mean?

A.Quiet.
B.Ruined.
C.Crowded.
D.Wonderful.
29.How do scientists think climate change has influenced storms?
A.It's led to storms destroying more.
B.It's made storms difficult to read.
C.It's increased the number of storms.
D.It's made storms happen in more places.
30.Why did the author give the example of Laura?
A.To introduce different types of storms.
B.To show that storms are causing more and more damage.
C.To prove that increased energy is causing storms to get stronger.
D.To explain how storms form.
31.What happened in Texas in 2017?
A.A wall of ocean water broke the record in history.
B. A girl named Laura was lost in a storm.
C.Greenhouse gases increased rapidly.
D.Floods hit some places there.

A new report connects eating eggs to an increased risk of heart disease. The results follow several earlier studies that found eating eggs was generally healthy. The study collects data from six other earlier studies. It shows a 6 percent increased risk of heart disease when the number of eggs a person ate each day increased by half an egg.
Norrina Allen,an associate professor at Northwestern University said that,in the United States, eggs are generally one of the top sources of cholesterol(膽固醇)in a person's daily food.People with higher levels of cholesterol in their food are at increased risk of the development of heart disease later in life. However,Allen added that she would not say that eggs are completely unhealthy. “I'm not saying that people should take them completely out of their food," she said.“I'm just suggesting that people eat them in a proper amount.”
Some experts believe the new study does not prove that eggs are causing heart disease."Cholesterol's role in the development of heart disease has been discussed for more than 30 years,”said Bruemmer,an associate professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.“This study does have clear shortcomings, including self-reporting at a single time point," he added.
Bruemmer said,“Eggs in moderation(適度)are probably acceptable from a nutritional standpoint.”“Moderation,"he added,“is less than one egg a day, including eggs in foods such as bread”.
Holly Andersen,a doctor at the New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, agrees that the study has "real shorcomings". One problem Andersen has with the study is that a lot of the egg-eating people in the study also appeared to be eating much meat and processed meat.“If you're taking a lot of processed meat,it doesn't matter how many eggs you're eating,” Andersen said.
Also,Andersen said,“The study can only show there is a relation between eggs eating and heart disease. But it cannot prove eggs are the cause of the disease. It may just be that people eating a lot of eggs are also taking a lot of bacon.”
32.What does Norrina Allen agree with?
A.Eggs are completely unhealthy.
B.Eggs contain the mostcholesterol.
C.Eggs should be eaten in a right amount.
D.Eggs have no connection with heart disease.
33.What is Bruemmer's attitude towards the study?

A.Interested.
B.Doubtful.
C.Concerned.
D.Hopeful.

34.What can we learn from Holly Andersen's words?
A.Eggs and meat cannot be eaten together.
B.The study is supported by evidence.
C.Processed meat should be avoided.
D.Processed meat may cause heart disease.
35.What's the best title of the text?
A.Do Eggs Cause Heart Disease?
B.Are Eggs the Top Source of Cholesterol?
C.What's the Proper Amount of Eggs Eaten?
D.Is the Cholesterol to Blame for Heart Disease?

Most people can study almost anywhere-if the subject attracts them. 36 Therefore, your study area should be as free as possible of noise and visual distractions(使人分心的事).On the other hand, what distracts one person may not affect another. Some students feel they can study better with soft music in the background. However, others cannot study effectively with music playing. 37
Students should study regularly throughout the school year.38_,you will remember more a-bout it. Never wait until just before an exam to start reviewing the work for the entire period to be covered by the test.Anything you learn by such cramming(臨時(shí)死記硬背)is usually soon forgotten.
You may find it helpful to plan a weekly study schedule. Many students write down the times they are in school or are involved with other activities.39_.It is easier to keep up with your schoolwork if you have the habit of studying at the same time daily. Two points to consider in developing a study sched-ule are the best time of day for studying and the length of each session.
The best time of day for studying depends on your personal preferences, the kind of life you lead and your family situation. Many students prefer to study immediately after arriving home from school. 40,and so they study in the early evening. Some students study late at night, or in the morning before school, because their home is too noisy early in the evening.
A. They then set aside a certain time each day for study
B. Find out what distracts you and remove it from your area
C. You can use these suggestions to improve your grades at school
D. Others have a job or participate in sports and other activities after school
E. But they have difficulty concentrating on something they consider uninteresting
F. You cannot study effectively unless you understand what you are supposed to accomplish

Text 10
People often think that Halloween is an American holiday. But in fact,it comes from the Celts of Ire-land.Today,people don't do the same as the old Celts:they don't have a big good meal before winter and don't leave their houses cold and without light for the night,so spirits don't want to live there. However, wearing scary masks and costumes-to make the spirits go away-is an old Celtic tradition.Today's people and especially children enjoy Halloween costume parties. They dress up as vampires and ghosts, but also heroes.Children in masks go from house to house and when the door opens, they say:Trick or treat! If they don't get sweets, they do something bad,for example, throw eggs at the house.Typical symbols of the holiday are horror characters:spiders, black cats, witches, and ghosts, but also big orange autumn vegeta-bles:pumpkins.You can cook excellent pumpkin soup or bake a pie,and make a lantern from the peel. Great Britain and the USA celebrate Halloween every year on the last October day.
