Hello, everyone, and welcome to Words and Their Stories. This is Randell in New York City. In today’s program, we are going to talk about the American idiom “be the bee’s knees” as someone asked me to explain it. According to a study, “be the bee’s knees” was first used in the 18th century to mean something very small and insignificant. In the 1920s, at which time a whole collection of American slang expressions were coined, “be the bee’s knees” meant something that’s great, unique, and of high quality. This is still used today, although not as much as in the 1920s and 1930s. People associate bee’s knees with the 1920s. The 1920s was a marvelous time for existing modernism in almost all areas, such as arts, architecture and society, especially in places like New York, Paris, Berlin, Los Angles, Chicago, and so on. So, how should we use the idiom? Examples of how it is used are as follows: I know Taylor. She is the bee’s knees. Julia is a terrible student but she thinks she’s the bee’s knees. Bob’s new car is really the bee’s knees. Until next time...I’m Randell.

Queen Elizabeth II, who ascended the British throne at 25, has passed away at the age of 96.
On Sept. 8, the official Twitter account belonging to the royal family confirmed the news, writing, “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.”
The news comes hours after Buckingham Palace issued a statement on Sept. 8, sharing that doctors were “concerned” with the Queen’s health and recommended she “remain under medical supervision.”
While Her Majesty stayed busy with a variety of royal engagements even in the final years of her life, some royal watchers grew concerned about her heath after the Queen started using a cane and was briefly hospitalized in October 2021 for an undisclosed ailment.
In February, the fears grew stronger after she tested positive for COVID-19, just weeks after she celebrated 70 years on the British throne to become the longest-reigning monarch in British history. However, the Queen would make a rare appearance a little over three months later in May at the Royal Windsor Horse Show.
But after the first day of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June, the Palace shared at the time that she experienced “some discomfort,” leading her to miss the National Service of Thanksgiving at St. Paul’s Cathedral on June 3.
Back in 1952, Elizabeth became queen upon the death of her father, King George VI. In 2015, she surpassed the previous longest-reigning British monarch, her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, and also became the longest-serving female head of state in world history.
Her extraordinary reign included countless overseas visits with world leaders, but the Queen always viewed public and voluntary service as one of the most important elements of her work.
According to the Palace, Elizabeth had links — as President or Royal Patron — with over 600 charities, military associations, professional bodies and public service organizations.
“I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service,” Elizabeth shared on her 21st birthday, back when she was still known as Princess Elizabeth.
Elizabeth was married to the late Prince Philip for 73 years before he passed away in April 2021 at the age of 99.
At the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral, a card was seen atop of the late royal’s coffin. The note, written on the Queen’s stationery and placed alongside flowers, appeared to read in part, “I love you”.
The Queen carried out all of her duties while raising four children: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. During her incredible life, she would also welcome eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren to the Royal Family.
At the time of Philip’s passing, Prince Harry reflected on his grandparents’ incredible love story.
“The two of them together were just the most adorable couple,” he shared. “I don’t know if anyone’s ever described them as adorable but, to me, knowing the cheekiness of him and knowing that behind what the world sees you have two individuals who were very much in love, and both at a very young age, dedicated both of their lives to service. The places these two travelled, the things they saw, the experiences they went through. That is an incredible bond between two people.”
28. What’s the author’s attitude towards Queen Elizabeth II’s work ?
A. Doubtful. B. Admirable. C. Objective. D. Confused.
29. What does the underlined word “undisclosed” mean in paragraph 4?

B. The Queen reigns longer than her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria and even longer than any other leader in the world.
C. The Queen is always dedicated to public and voluntary service instead of caring about her family.
D. The Queen was forced to miss several events in the final stage of her life due to some health issues.
31. What can be implied from the last paragraph?
A. The only person who understands Prince Philip is the Queen.
B. The Queen and her husband both dedicated their lives to service.
C. The Queen and her husband forms a special bond and shared a lot of common experiences.

“Eating together” is a statement that doctors use regularly when they talk with families about maintaining normal weight. Children who eat regular family meals tend to have lower rates of obesity. A new study takes a look at why.
A team led by Jerica Berg asked the families of 120 children to record eight days of meals. Berge’s team sorted the interactions occurring at the table into two broad groups—those relating to the emotional atmosphere at the meal, such as how much the family members seemed to be enjoying the time together, and how many uncomfortable silences occurred—and those involving food specially, such as how many unpleasant feelings emerged from discussions about food, and how much the parents controlled what and how much children ate.
Children who were overweight had family meals that included more negative emotional interactions compared to children who weren’t overweight. Their meals tended to have a warmer, more communicative atmosphere. For example, these children were encouraged to eat foods to get stronger or run faster, while heavier children experienced more negative pressures including threats and being made to feel guilty about those who can’t afford to eat three meals a day. If parents talk constantly throughout the meal about food, and lectured the children about homework or attempted to control what the children ate, the youngsters were also more likely to be heavy. Also, the researchers found heavier children tended to have shorter meals.
In the meantime, the current data suggests that simply sitting down at the same table at the same time isn’t enough to influence obesity. And it’s up to family doctors to help families understand how to take full advantage of breaking bread together.
32. What were classified into two groups by Berge’s team?
A. Feelings emerging from discussions about food.
B. Features of family meals influencing weight.
C. Emotional atmosphere during the meals.
D. Conversations happening during dinner.
33. What did parents with overweight children not do at the table?
A. They told the children to eat to grow healthier.

根據(jù)第二段中“Berge’s team sorted the interactions occurring at the table into two broad groups—those relating to the emotional atmosphere at the meal, such as how much the family members seemed to be enjoying the time together, and how many uncomfortable silences occurred—and those involving food specially, such as how many unpleasant feelings emerged from discussions about food, and how much the parents controlled what and how much children ate.(Berge的團(tuán)隊(duì)將餐桌上發(fā)生的互動(dòng)分為兩大類:一類是與用餐時(shí)的情緒氛圍有關(guān)的,比如家庭成員在一起的時(shí)候有多開心,有多少不舒服的沉默發(fā)生了;另一類是特別與食物有關(guān)的,比如討論食物時(shí)產(chǎn)生了多少不愉快的感覺,以及父母在多大程度上控制了孩子吃什么和吃多少)”可知,Berge的團(tuán)隊(duì)將影響體重的家庭膳食特點(diǎn)分為兩類。

后文小標(biāo)題“You can learn how your food is raised. (你可以了解食物是如何生長(zhǎng)的)”、“You can reconnect with nature.(你可以重新接觸大自然)”都是在說明去農(nóng)場(chǎng)的好處,即“好理由”;而上文“One of the best ways to help solve the problem is to visit a farm. (幫助解決這個(gè)問題的最好方法之一就是參觀農(nóng)場(chǎng))”也強(qiáng)調(diào)參觀農(nóng)場(chǎng)的重要性。F項(xiàng)“這里有一些你應(yīng)該參觀農(nóng)場(chǎng)的好理由。”符合文意,且visit a farm為原詞復(fù)現(xiàn)。故選F項(xiàng)。
【37題詳解】
上文“When you visit a farm, you get firsthand experience on how your food is raised. (當(dāng)你參觀農(nóng)場(chǎng)時(shí),你會(huì)對(duì)食物是如何種植的有第一手的經(jīng)驗(yàn))”引出關(guān)鍵詞“experience(經(jīng)驗(yàn))”,后文“which will change the way you connect with your food and give you a deeper appreciation for all the hard work. Seeing this will make you waste fewer resources and be a more sensible consumer.
上文“Nowadays, all we have are big buildings, highways, and countless cars. We spend too much time in front of screens.
下文“We all read success stories about farmers in magazines and even TV shows, but the people in these stories are real people with real families. (我們都在雜志甚至電視節(jié)目中讀到過農(nóng)民的成功故事,但這些故事中的人都是有真實(shí)家庭的真實(shí)的人)”提到farmers“農(nóng)民”和families“家庭”。A項(xiàng)“你可以與農(nóng)民及其家庭建立聯(lián)系。”符合文意,其中farmers“農(nóng)民”和families“家庭”為原詞復(fù)現(xiàn)。故選A項(xiàng)。
上文“People that appreciate the people who purchase things from their farm. People with a real commitment to making their visitors feel like home.(感激那些從他們農(nóng)場(chǎng)購(gòu)買東西的人。真正致力于讓訪客有家的感覺的人)”提到appreciate“感激”。所以空處應(yīng)該選擇帶有appreciate“感激”近義或同義的選項(xiàng)。B項(xiàng)“我們應(yīng)該感謝這些人”符合語境,grateful“感謝的”和appreciate“感激”為近義詞。故選B項(xiàng)。

【答案】Dear Mike,
I am glad to hear from you. I feel proud knowing you’re interested in Chinese poet, Li Bai. In order to help you know more about Li Bai, I will tell you something about him.
As for me, my favourite poet is also Li Bai, who is regarded as the greatest romantic poet of the Tang Dynasty. Living in a golden age of Chinese poetry, Li Bai is best-known for his rich imagination. Equally impressive is his free expression of strong feelings.
Li Bai created a large number of wonderful poems throughout his life, many of which remain popular today. What I appreciate most are his landscape poems, in which he conveyed his strong love for nature, friends and the people. His poems have had a great influence on generations of poets both in and outside China.
Now, Have you got a better understanding of Li Bai? If you want to know more, please write to me soon!
Yours,
Li Hua

I waited until a week before I told my mother. On a cold Monday afternoon I went home from school.
“Mom,” I said, “about graduation...”
“Yes?” she answered.
“They are going to give me the first-prize medal," I said.
Still working over the stove she looked over her shoulder at me and smiled broadly. "That's wonderful, Babe. Dad and I will be both there, and we'll be the proudest.”
She must have seen by the look on my face that something was wrong. She turned her back and said, “So?”
“So, I have to get long pants," I said.
“Babe, we don't have money for new pants right now," she said.
"Okay" I burst out. "Then I won't go to graduation. Plus, I'm running away from home!"
"If I were you, I wouldn't pack my bags. We'll solve the problem of pants somehow," she said.
The following Saturday, when my mother said "Let's go shopping", I knew that she had solved the problem. Then we left home. We took the trolley and got off at Southern Boulevard, the best shopping street. The clothing store was just a couple of blocks away.
But first we walked a short way down the Boulevard and stopped at a place I had never noticed before.
"Wait here," she said. Then she entered a storefront that looked like a bank and opened the door with the hand with a gold wedding ring on her ring finger.
She went out about ten minutes later with a purse in her left hand, and then we went to the pants store. I chose a pair of pants. After a patient bargain with the seller, my mother bought it at the price of three dollars and fifty cents and handed it to me.

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
I was holding the pants tightly under my arm when my mother went to pay the money. I saw her take a tiny brown envelope from her purse, tear the sealed envelope open and remove the contents. There were four brand-new one-dollar bills inside. She carefully unfolded them and handed them to the seller. The seller gave my mother the fifty cents change.Feeling greatly curious, how did she manage to get such a large sum of money? Maybe my parents found new jobs with a higher salary.
Paragraph 2:
We took the trolley back home. Sitting next to my mother on the trolley, I had the window seat and looked out. I even imagined Father had come home early and prepared a wonderful meal. About halfway home, I glanced down at my mother's hands folded across her purse, which was resting on her lap. It was then that I saw the gold wedding ring that had always encircled her ring finger on her left hand was no longer there. Deeply moved by what my mum had done, I truly understood everything and embraced my mum tightly, with tears rolling down.
