This is the first period of this unit. The theme of this section is "Understanding travel by Train across Canada", which tells the story of two sisters, Li Daiyu and Liu Qian, on their long journey from Vancouver to the Atlantic Coast from west to east.This section includes five reading comprehension activities.Activity 1 is thinking and discussing before reading. Activity 2 Train your reading strategies in this unit. Activity 3 guide the students to sort out and summarize the travel experiences of Li Daiyu and Liu Qian in time and space order by filling in the table, so as to achieve the purpose of information structure. Activity 4 guide the students to pay attention to the text markers once again and understand their functions in the context of the text. Activity 5 is to expand the discussion after reading.

Answers:1).Rail journeys used to take a long time一people often took them because they were cheaper than flying. However, now with high speed rail, they are much shorter, but also more expensive.

2.How is a rail journey different from other forms of travel,such as by plane or car?

2.A rail journey is different from a car journey in that with a car journey, if you see something interesting, you can stop and take a look. A journey by plane will get you to your destination much faster than a trip by train or car. However, usually you cannot see much interesting from a plane window, and a plane gives much less space and fewer opportunities to get up and walk around than on a train.
