Dear Alcohol,
You've been around forever. I can remember all the pain you've caused for me.
Do you remember the night you almost took my father's life? I do.He loves you. Sometimes I think he loves you more than he loves me. He's addicted to you, to the way you promise to rid him of his problems only to cause more of them. You just sat back and laughed as his car went spinning through the street, crashing into two other cars. He wasn't the only one hurt by you that night.
Do you remember the night of my first high school party? You were there. My friends were intrigued(被迷住了的) by you. They treated you as if they were never going to see you again, drinking all of you that they could.I spent two hours that night helping my friends who had fallen completely. “I'm so embarrassed,” they said as I held their hair back so that they could vomit(嘔吐). “I'm sorry,” they said when I called taxies for them, walking them out and paying the driver in advance. “This won't happen again,” they said as they were sent to the hospital to have their stomachs pumped. Two 15-year-old girls slept in hospital beds that night thanks to you.
Do you remember the night when you took advantage of my 17-year-old neighbor who had to drive to pick up his sister from her dance lessons? Do you know how we all felt when he hit another car and killed the two people in the other car? He died the next morning too. His sister walked home from her dance lesson, and passed police cars and a crowd of people gathering on the sidewalk just two blocks away from the dance studio. She didn't realize her brother was in the midst of it all. She never saw him again. And it's all your fault.
I wish you'd walk out of my life forever. I don't want anything to do with you. Look at all the pain you've caused. Sure, you've made people happy too from time to time. But the damage you've caused in the lives of millions is inexcusable. Stop luring(誘惑) in the people I love. Stop hurting me, please.sincerely anonymous.

The air conditioner is nearly 100 years old, but the technology is essentially the same as it used to be. Although it has made our lives easier and more comfortable, this all comes at a cost. The cooling of our air is responsible for 10% of the planet's electricity consumption. And as the world heats, demand for air conditioners will continue to grow. This, in turn, will increase the influence that cooling machines have on the climate, thus warming the Earth further and creating a cycle.
The current technology is unsustainable. That's why a group led by RMI, a nonprofit environmental research organization, has launched the Global Cooling Prize, a $1-million competition to design of the next generation of air cooling systems. The proposed designs employ a wide range of technologies. Barocal, a Cambridge University startup, uses solid-state cooling technologies instead of traditional liquid refrigerants (制冷劑) that may leak out over time. Meanwhile, a proposal from Kraton, a Texan chemical engineering company, simply uses water, completely doing away with the main mechanical component of air conditioners, the compressor, to make the design more affordable. Others focus on the limitations of current air conditioning units, such as the lack of control over both temperature and humidity (濕度) at the same time. The design proposed by US startup M2 Thermal Solutions allows users to set both a specific temperature and the level of humidity in a room.
It's difficult to tell what these proposed new machines will look like before the actual machines are built, but it's arguable that they will create something new, as most of the shortlisted designs are based on fundamentally different technology compared to traditional devices.
The overall winner, announced in November 2021, will be awarded $1 million in prize money. This is when the real challenge begins: convincing the world that traditional air conditioners need replacing. “The current industry is worth more than $100 billion and has a well-established value chain from manufacturing (生產) to distribution to after-sales support,” said Vijay Mhetar, Kraton's senior vice president. “Any new design will need to have minimum barriers for customer adoption and have a similar supply chain established.”
24. What does the underlined word “vicious” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? ______
A. Slow. B. Negative.
C. Natural. D. Efficient.
25. What will Kraton apply to its new design? ______
A. Water instead of a compressor.
B. Solid-state cooling technologies.
C. Recycled liquid refrigerants.
D. Control over humidity.
26. What does Vijay Mhetar expect of the new design? ______
A. It must be multifunctional.
B. It must be cheap and energy-saving.
C. It should have an entire service system.
D. It should offer more choices to customers.
27. What's the author's main purpose in writing the text? ______
A. To talk about the history of air conditioning.
B. To ask people to reduce air conditioning use.
C. To show the disadvantages of air conditioners.
D. To introduce a contest for new air conditioners.
C
You've probably experienced this before: when returning from a round trip, the trip home felt shorter. What is the scientific basis for this?
Some theories include the power of expectation. Especially for vacations, the anticipation of finally reaching your destination can make the experience of traveling there feel longer because you can't wait to get there. Additionally, if the trip to the location takes longer than expected, we may readjust our expectations of the length of the trip so that the trip back feels shorter and thus more pleasant.
Another theory is how humans take time to learn and become more familiar with new sights. When faced with new stimuli or experiences, we feel as if time is getting slower to allow more brain processing time. This contributes to why elder people often remark that time goes faster the more they age because being older often means fewer new experiences, so there is less need for the brain to interpret time more slowly to pay more attention to solving a problem.
In the case of the “return trip effect,” after viewing the landmarks on the road while getting to the destination, it is easier to recognize these points on the way back. Having less sense of puzzle and being more certain of one's surroundings can make time feel faster. This is similar to how many activities can feel natural after learning the process. For example, when you first learn to ride a bike, you carefully strategize your speed and balance, but after a while of practicing, your mind is freer to wander off.
This “return trip effect” is most notably noticed after reflecting on how long a trip to an unfamiliar location took. This explains why the “return trip effect” is usually associated with vacations and not daily commutes to work or school because by then, the sights are so familiar that humans can more accurately measure the time spent going to and back from a location.
28. Why do elder people feel time flies? ______
A. They have fewer new stimuli to process.
B. They have low expectations for the future.
C. Their problem-solving ability declines.
D. Their brain tends to misinterpret time.
29. What does the example of learning to ride a bike in paragraph 4 prove? ______
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. Familiarity speeds up time.
C. The journey of life is full of uncertainties.
D. Similar landmarks cause confusion with time.
30. Which trip may feel the longest? ______
A. The trip to school.
B. The trip to a strange place.
C. The trip home from school.
D. The trip home from a strange place.
31. What is the best title for the text? ______
A. How can we make a long trip relatively short?
B. What is the scientific basis for time travel?
C. How long can the “return trip effect” last?
D. Why does the “return trip effect” occur?
D
As the effects of climate change become more disastrous, well-known research institutions and government agencies are focusing new money and attention on an idea: artisticially cooling the planet, in the hopes of buying humanity more time to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
That strategy, called solar climate intervention or solar geoengineering, involves reflecting more of the sun's energy back into space-abruptly reducing global temperatures in a way that imitates the effects of ash clouds flowing out from the volcanic eruptions. The idea has been considered as a dangerous and fancied solution, one that would encourage people to keep burning fossil fuels while exposing the planet to unexpected and potentially threatening side effects, producing more destructive hurricanes, wildfires, floods and other disasters.
But as global warming continues, producing more destructive hurricanes, wildfires, floods and other disasters, some researchers and policy experts say that concerns about geoengineering should be outweighed by the imperative to better understand it, in case the consequences of climate change become so terrible that the world can't wait for better solutions. One way to cool the earth is by injecting aerosols(氣溶膠)into the upper layer of the atmosphere, where those particles (粒子)reflect sunlight away, from the earth. That process works, according to Douglas Mac Martin, a researcher at Cornell University.
“We know with 100% certainty that we can cool the planet,” he said in an interview. What's still unclear, he added, is what happens next. Temperature, Mac Martin said, is an indicator for a lot of climate effects. “What does it do to the strength of hurricanes?” he asked. “What does it do to agriculture production? What does it do to the risk of forest fires?”
Another institution funded by the National Science Foundation will analyze hundreds of simulations (模擬)of aerosol injection, testing the effects on weather extremes around the world. One goal of the research is to look for a: the amount of artificial cooling that can reduce extreme weather events without causing broader changes in regional rainfall patterns or similar impacts.
32. Why do researchers and government agencies work on cooling the earth? ______
A. To prevent natural disasters.
B. To win more time to reduce gas emissions.
C. To imitate volcanic eruptions.
D. To encourage more people to burn fossil fuels.
33. What are researchers worried about in terms of global warming? ______
A. More volcanoes will throw out.
B. More solar energy will go into space.
C. More disasters will endanger the future of the world.
D. People will keep burning fossil fuels to keep warm.
34. What can be inferred from Douglas' words in an interview? ______
A. He thinks more research remains to be done.
B. He is optimistic about the effect of cooling the earth.
C. He is concerned about the reduction in agriculture production.
D. He disapproves of the practice of solar climate intervention.
35. What does the underlined words “sweet spot” in the last paragraph mean? ______
A. The rainfall pattern of a region.
B. The modest drop in temperature.
C. The number of extreme weather events.
D. The sudden rise in aerosols injection.

A warm and sunny afternoon on a holiday, birds were singing and flowers were waving in the breeze. The sunshine cast beautiful shadows among the leaves. Susan was sitting in the room and doing the weaving(編織)task her grandmother had set, absent-minded.
A group of little girls came up to Susan from outside, jumping and talking happily. Rose, her best friend, asked Susan if she would like to play in the woods with them. Susan sighed and refused. After all, she had to finish the job first. The girls argued it must be rather tiresome to stay at home on such a good day. They commented that Susan's grandmother was too strict. After hearing this, Susan bent her head.
As they disappeared in the distance, she could picture what would happen to these little crazy creatures. However, her heart sank, thinking of the crown(皇冠)game-the girls' favorite. She was sure that she would be the queen if she were there. Suddenly, an idea flashed into her mind. Perhaps there might be no harm if she moved the mark Grandmother had put in the stocking(長筒襪). After a while, she told her grandmother that she had made it, her heart beating wildly. Grandmother was shocked, but took the work, surveying it very closely. Then laying great stress on each word, she told Susan it was true, because she had counted twenty turns from the mark. Besides, she believed Susan had never cheated her. “Susan, go and amuse yourself as you like”. Grandma said, gently patting her on the head. Susan's cheeks turned red, but she rushed out and even forgot to say thanks.
The girls were excited and surprised to see Susan join their company. Soon, the woods were bursting with the elves' (小精靈) laughter. Not a moment later, Susan sat on the grass, feeling guilty. She did cheat. When her companions ran about enjoying themselves, Susan wished she were at home admitting her fault.

Dear Tom,
I am sorry to tell you that our original plan to visit Chaozhou Museum this Saturday afternoon will have to be cancelled. That is because I have been informed by our teacher that I am going to take part in the English Speech Contest to be held by our school at that time. You know that I've been practicing my oral English, so it really means a lot to me.
How about we go there another time? Will next Sunday afternoon be suitable for you? Please tell me at your earliest convenience. Say sorry again for the trouble I bring to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
Paragraph 1:
Finally, the exciting moment came and all girls decided to make a crown of flowers. Rose and Susan were to make the crown while other girls went to pick flowers. Minutes later, the girls came back with flowers of different colors. Then Rose and Susan began to work.Soon, a fancy crown was made! The girls heatedly discussed who should be the queen. One tall, thin girl said Susan was to wear it, for she behaved best both at home and school, and others nodded with smiles. Here came the thrilling ceremony. However, Susan stood still, not a bit excited when Rose put the crown on her head. Unexpectedly, Susan snatched it off and threw it on the ground.
Paragraph 2:
The girls looked at her with surprise. Tears welling up in her eyes, Susan explained that she had cheated her grandmother in order to play in the woods with them. Feeling sorry, Rose comforted her and said she was great to admit her fault. Drying her tears, Susan ran home and told everything to her grandmother. To her relief, her grandmother forgave her, saying, “I knew it all the time, but I let you go, hoping you would tell me yourself.” Susan's cheeks turned red and made up her mind that she would never tell a lie again.
