I worked as a volunteer in a Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. My job was to help make the kids feel happy when they stayed in the hospital. Sounds interesting, right? But some people cannot understand why I did it.
Let me tell you why I did volunteering. The main reason was to help create (創(chuàng)造) a better future for people, no matter who or where they are. In this big world, so many people need help. Look at the children in the hospital where I worked. They felt afraid and lonely facing all the difficulties because their parents also had other kids to care for. So, why no try to help as many people as possible? That was my idea.
Volunteering in Africa and helping people there let me see other parts of the world. And volunteering in the hospital showed me a side of the world I did not know about before. I met people from all over the world, each with their own ideas, experiences (經(jīng)歷) and dreams. We got to share so much with each other and we always have a good time.

“Looking up, I find the moon bright; Bowing, in homesickness I’m drowned (舉頭望明月,低頭思故鄉(xiāng))” When Gladys, from America, read the line from Chinese poet Li Bai in her class, she understood the poet’s feelings. “I can’t help but feel homesick,” said Gladys, who is studying Chinese Language and Literature at Southwest University.
Gladys slowly fell in love with old Chinese poems. She thinks it’s romantic that old Chinese poems spread (傳播) over the mountains and travel from the past to the present with true meaning and feelings. “This is what many popular novels and online articles cannot do,” she said.
But her surprise doesn’t stop here. Gladys has found that the cultural essence (文化精髓) in these poems can find readers all over the world. For example, Li Bai wrote, “Heaven has made us talents; we’re not made in vain. A thousand gold coins spent, said something quite similar (類似的) — the person born with a talent is meant to use it and will find great happiness when they do. “The two poets are over a thousand years and thousands of miles apart. But great poets think in the same way,” Gladys said.
In the future, she wants to be a translator who spreads Chines culture across a bigger stage.

When we think of food farming, we usually think of green fields in the country outside the city. Sam Chee works on a very different type of farm, in the center of the Canadian city of Toronto. “We grow fruits, vegetables and herbs,” says Sam. “But not many people know the farm is here. You can’t see it from the street. We’re on top of an office building, 50 meters above the ground.”
Rooftop (屋頂) farming is becoming popular in cities like Toronto, New York and London. The roofs of buildings are often just wasted space, but people can use the place for growing good fresh food right in the middle of the city. Sam explains how it works. “We grow everything in big pots and boxes — there are hundreds of them. We catch rainwater to water the plants when the weather is dry.”
The rooftop farm where Sam works belongs to a restaurant called Green Garden, on the ground floor of the building. The farm produces (生產(chǎn)) about half the restaurant’s fruits and vegetables. Sam believes that the rooftop farm is what makes Green Garden special. Sam says, “We help to keep food production local. We don’t need to buy the food from anywhere, and that saves energy. It’s better for the environment (環(huán)境).”
The food from the rooftop is fresher too. “When the fruit and vegetables are ripe (成熟), we can pick them and use them right away. They taste better when they’re really fresh,” says Sam. “I hope that there will be more rooftop farms in the city soon. It could be the farming of the future.”
62. Green Garden’s rooftop farm is ________.
A. in the countryside B. in the middle of a small town
C. in the city center of Toronto D. near the city of New York
63. What does Sam’s farm grow the fruits and vegetables for?
A. It offers them to a restaurant in the same building.
B. It sells them to other restaurants nearby.
C. The people working there can take them home.
D. Sam can eat them by himself.
64. According to Sam, the food from the rooftop is better than the food bought from other places because _________.
A. it’s cheaper and tastes better B. it is fresher and better for the environment
C. it uses wasted space in the city D. it can’t be bought in the local supermarket
65. The best title of the passage should be _________.
A. The City of Toronto B. Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
C. Better Environment D. Rooftop Farming

“How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way that people in the United Sates greet each other. But when a person says “How are you?”, he hopes to hear the answer “Fine”, even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. 66 They are common (常見(jiàn)的) ways of saying “Hello” and “Hi”.
Sometimes, people also don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?” the other person may be thinking, “No, I don’t agree. I think you’re wrong.” 67 It’s a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone.
68 For example, when a person wants to finish talking with other people on the phone, he may say “I have to go now.” Sometimes he gives an excuse (接口), “Someone’s at the door.”, “Something is burning.” and so on. 69 It’s a polite way to stop a conversation and it doesn’t hurt the other person’s feelings. 70 This is one way of being nice to people and it’s a part of the game of language.
A. The excuse may be real, or it may not be.
B. It’s interesting when people want to finish talking.
C. People don’t always say exactly what they are thinking.
D. It’s hard to know how people want to start a conversation.
E. But it doesn’t sound very polite, so they may say, “I’m not sure”.
F. When a person doesn’t agree with others, it is rude to say it loudly.
G. The reason is that “How are you?” isn’t really a question, and “fine” isn’t really an answer.

請(qǐng)認(rèn)真閱讀下面短文,并根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問(wèn)題。
Do you remember the last two science classes from the Tiangoing space station? Chinese astronauts (宇航員) did many fun experiments (實(shí)驗(yàn)) in the Tianhe core module (核心艙). On October 12, three astronauts of Shenzhou XIV — Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe, gave a third space class. This time, they moved to the Wentian lad module (實(shí)驗(yàn)艙) to start their class! What did the astronauts teach? Let’s take a look.
Stand up to sleep
The beds in the Tianhe module are placed horizontally (橫著), but the beds in the Wentian lab module are kept upright (豎著). That means astronauts in the Wentian lad need to sleep by standing up! But as Liu Yang said, people don’t feel any difference because there’s no gravity (重力) in space.
Drink with a long straw (吸管)
Liu Yang drank mango juice with a 2-meter straw easily. But on earth, it’s very difficult to do this because of the air pressure (壓力). Most people’s lung (肺) can only suck (吸) water up to 1 meter high. You’d better not try it on Earth because it’s bad for your lung.
