Once when I was like nine years old a kid from my neighborhood gave me a rock, littered with yellow crystals, that he’d found in his granny’s backyard. He said it was a geode(晶球). I didn’t know what that meant, but I thought crystals were cool; I’d only ever seen them in the shops at the mall. I showed the gift to my aunt who then gave me a book on rocks that my cousin had outgrown. She explained how there were all sorts of different rocks out there, and how there was a whole science — called geology — devoted to collecting and studying them.
Because it was summer, and because I was sure I’d make an even better geologist than my cousin or the neighbor kid, I decided to give it a try. Using one of the little hand-shovels from my pop’s garden, I explored the banks of the shallow river that ran along the edge of our backyard and dug around in the little forest down the street. But all I ever turned up was the same old blue slate(石板) that we already had in spades on the side of our house. The rock book was a tease; it contained many pretty things, but none of them were to be found within the few-mile-radius(半徑) through which I was allowed to ride my bike without my parents’ permission.
After a few weeks, I gave up and moved on to botany. We had awesome flower and vegetable gardens in our yard and it was far more satisfying to plant and grow and harvest (and eat!) our little crop of tomatoes and zucchini and corn than it was to search for things that might be pretty but were near impossible to find and had no practical value anyway. My failed attempt at geology had embarrassed me. And in my embarrassment, I had concluded that all of geology was foolish (I think I even threw the book away).
4. Who gave the author a book on rock?

D. The author’s cousin

6. How did the author feel at his failure in geology ?

C. satisfied. D. angry
7. What can we learn from the text?
A. Geology is a science has nothing to do with rocks .
B. Geology failed to attract the author at last.
C. Geology was more interesting than botany for the author. .
D. Geology had some practical value for the author.

The Forbidden City is well known for being full of Chinese cultural and historical relics. But Masters in the Forbidden City does not just focus on the stories of the past.
Instead, the documentary movie, which came out in Chinese cinemas on Dec. 16, focuses on ordinary people — the restorers of relics and antiquities.
The stories are told at a slow and relaxed pace, reflecting the restorers’ work. Restoration of cultural relics and antiques can be time-consuming, and sometimes boring. Yet these restorers’ patience and peace of mind are especially precious in a society where everything is changing so fast.
“If you choose this job, you have to stand hours of work sitting on a chair. You need to be quiet and get used to being quiet,” says Wang Jin, an ancient clock repair expert.
A touching part of the documentary is the spirit of craftsmanship (工藝) in the restorers. “Years of humdrum work requires not only skill, but also faith and spirit,” China Daily commented. “Looking for preciseness and perfection, devoting yourself to work, patience, loneliness... All these qualities come from the craftsman spirit.”
But unlike the popular idea of serious experts who sit around being serious, the documentary shows off the enthusiasm of the restorers. They play their guitars and make jokes about each other after a long day of restoration work.
One scene that has been very popular with Internet users features a young female restorer riding a bicycle through the empty Forbidden City on a Monday. While she is doing this, a narrator says, “The last person to do this was Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty.”
Masters in the Forbidden City has proved wrong many people’s ideas about antique restorers, allowing them to realize that they are not old, dull professors, but people in their 40s, 30s and even 20s who can be quite pleasing to the eye.
8. According to the text, what’s the main purpose of the documentary Masters in the Forbidden City?
A. To draw attention to Chinese antique restorers' lives.
B. To show people how antiques are restored.
C. To display relics seldom seen by ordinary people.
D. To praise the craftsmanship of Chinese antique restorers.
9. What can we learn from Wang Jin’s words?
A. he often gets tired with his work.
B. antique restorers need to be patient and peaceful.
C. there is no need to do restoration work fast.
D. it takes years of hard work to adapt to antique restoration.
10. What does the underlined word “humdrum” probably mean?
A. Different. B. Relaxing.
C. Unusual. D. Boring.
11. What is the author’s purpose of mentioning the bicycle-riding scene in the documentary?
A. To remind the audience of the last Qing emperor.
B. To show the strange hobbies of young antique restorers.
C. To show that the documentary breaks from (擺脫) the old, dull image of antique restorers.
D. To encourage the young to consider a career in antique restoration in the future.

【導語】本文是一篇說明文。文章主要通過紀錄片《我在故宮修文物》介紹了做遺產(chǎn)和古董修復工作的匠人們的生活。
【8題詳解】
細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第二段“Instead, the documentary movie, which came out in Chinese cinemas on Dec. 16, focuses on ordinary people — the restorers of relics and antiquities.(相反,這個在12月16日上映的有關中國博物館的紀錄片是圍繞普通人——做遺產(chǎn)和古董修復工作的人而拍攝的)”可知,紀錄片《我在故宮修文物》的主要目的是關注做遺產(chǎn)和古董修復工作的人的生活。故選A。
【9題詳解】
推理判斷題。根據(jù)第四段““If you choose this job, you have to stand hours of work sitting on a chair. You need to be quiet and get used to being quiet,” says Wang Jin, an ancient clock repair expert.(“如果你選擇這份工作,你將不得不忍受坐在椅子上工作好幾個小時。你需要安靜并且習慣安靜,”古鐘修復專家王進說)”可知,古鐘修復專家王進認為做古董修復工作的人需要有耐心并且內(nèi)心平靜。故選B。
【10題詳解】
詞句猜測題。根據(jù)第五段“Years of humdrum work requires not only skill, but also faith and spirit,” China Daily commented. “Looking for preciseness and perfection, devoting yourself to work, patience, loneliness... All these qualities come from the craftsman spirit.”(“許多年的humdrum工作要求的不僅僅是技術,還要有信仰和精神,”《中國日報》評論道?!
根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段“One scene that has been very popular with Internet users features a young female restorer riding a bicycle through the empty Forbidden City on a Monday. While she is doing this, a narrator says, “The last person to do this was Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty.”(一個在網(wǎng)民中非常受歡迎的場景是,一位年輕的女修復師周一騎著自行車穿過空無一人的紫禁城。當她這樣做的時候,旁白說,“最后一個這樣做的人是清朝的最后一個皇帝溥儀?!?”及最后一段“Masters in the Forbidden City has proved wrong many people’s ideas about antique restorers, allowing them to realize that they are not old, dull professors, but people in their 40s, 30s and even 20s who can be quite pleasing to the eye.(《我在故宮修文物》證明了很多人對古玩修復者的看法是錯誤的,讓他們意識到他們不是又老又悶的教授,而是四十幾歲、三十幾歲甚至二十幾歲的養(yǎng)眼人)”可推斷,作者在紀錄片中提到騎自行車的場景的目的是為了表明這部紀錄片打破了古舊、沉悶的古董修復者形象。故選C。
D
Imagine a world where you move around in front of a personal computer in your own sound space. You listen to your favorite songs, play loud computer games or watch a movie—all without other people hearing the sound. That is the possibility presented by “sound beaming,” a new technology from Noveto Systems, an Israeli company.
On Friday, the company presented a desktop device that sends sound directly to a listener without the need for headphones or a special receiver. Noveto Systems gave The Associated Press (AP) a chance to test its Sound Beamer 1.0 before its debut. The AP’s Louise Dixon writes that listening to the device is like something from a science fiction movie. The sound seems so close it feels like it is inside your ears while also in front, above and behind them.
Noveto expects the device will have many uses. Office workers could listen to music or conference calls without others hearing. People could play a game, a movie or music without waking up others in the same room. Because the device does not use headphones, it is possible to hear other sounds in the room clearly.
The device uses a 3-D technology that finds and follows the ear position of the listener. It sends ultrasonic waves to create sound pockets by the user’s ears. Sound can be heard in stereo or 3-D. The 3-D method creates sound on all sides of the listener The demo version of the device included nature videos of birds on a lake, bees flying and a quiet waterway. By changing a setting, the sound can follow a listener around when they move their head. It also is possible to move out sound beam’s path and hear nothing at all.
While the idea of sound beaming is not new, Noveto was the first to launch the technology. Its chief executive officer Christophe Ramstein said a smaller version of the device will be ready for release to consumers next year.
12. What do we know about Sound Beamer?
A. It’s a device appearing in the science fiction movie.
B. Listeners got its sound through a receiver.
C. It can prevent other sound being heard.
D. The smaller one will be on market next year.
13. What does the underlined word “debut” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. New version. B. First appearance. C. Another failure. D. Some doubt.
14. What does the fourth paragraph tell us?
A. How the device works. B. How to use the device.
C. The device’s advantage. D. Why the device is invented.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The introduction of a new device — sound beamer. B. The usage of 3D technology.
C. The influence brought by sound beamer. D. 3D technology and listening experience.

I grew up in a large family of twelve siblings(兄弟姐妹).We weren’t poor by most standards, but things were definitely tight for us. My parents never shared their financial worries. Instead, they chose to let us have a carefree childhood. But despite their consideration, I knew, as children often do, that there were times they went without and that certain things my friends had wouldn’t be available to me.
Back in those days, hot lunch was a luxury for the wealthier kids, and hot-lunch buyers sat separately from the students who brought cold lunch. My siblings and I brought lunch from home every day: thick slices of homemade bread hiding one scant slice of bologna, three oatmeal cookies, and a small apple. We would look on longingly as the rich kids proudly sat down with their steaming plates of fried chicken or fish sticks and potato puffs, cartons of cold milk, chilled peaches and a slice of cake.
I never said anything, but my first grade teacher, Mrs. Caruso, must have seen the desire in my eyes. One day she quietly pressed a note into my hand and whispered, “Give this to your mother.”
I skipped home and gave my mom the note. She read it and smiled. “Well, Mrs. Caruso said because of all your hard work, she wants to buy your lunch tomorrow.” The next day, I proudly carried my tray of chicken fricassee across the cafeteria and took my seat at the hot-lunch table. Honestly, the food wasn’t as great as I had imagined, but I was pleased to be there and felt honored to be a part of the group.
One rainy day, Mrs. Caruso asked me to stay after school. My stomach instantly dropped to the floor. Surely, I must be in trouble! Did she know I hadn't finished my math sheet? Did she see me teasing Billy on the playground?

【47題答案】
【答案】After the other students had left, Mrs. Caruso said she was going to finish her work and then drive me home. It was raining, and she knew I had a long walk. We pulled up at my house and she got out, taking out a few bags on the porch. “Tell your mom I had a few extra things she might want,” she said Then she drove away. Inside the bags were clothes, toys, and books. That summer, Mrs. Caruso invited us all to her home. She gave us lemonade and sugar cookies, and we were amazed at the fancy fruits in her backyard.
I don’t know why Mrs. Caruso helped my family. Maybe she also grew up in a family that struggled. Maybe she knew what it was like to feel just a little less than everyone else. Somehow, even with her quiet char-ity, she never made me feel ashamed. She just made me feel loved and important. Thanks to her, I learned that I had just as much night as anyone to sit at the hot-lunch table. I don’t remember what Mrs. Caruso looked like anymore, but I do remember how she made me feel. I’ve never lost that feeling of being important to someone and being protected by her. After all these years, I’m still grateful to that wonderful teacher.
