Book towns around the world
Hay-on-Wye
The booktown movement was started in the 1960s by Hay resident Richard Booth, who had the idea to promote his economically struggling town in Wales. Then he made it a destination for book lovers and collectors. In addition to its many bookstores, the town holds the annual Hay Festival which attracts more tourists. The festival has expanded over the years to include musical performances, film previews and art exhibitions.
Wigtown
Wigtown, Scotland, has its own literary festival, which is held each autumn. And there's also another event which is designed to target children. And tourists have taken an interest in Wigtown's bird watching, hiking and sightseeing opportunities in addition to the books and cultural events. Its effort to become a destination for book lovers began when it earned the right to call itself Scotland's National Book Town in the late 1990s.
Paju Book City
The first plans for Paju Book City were created in 1989 by a group of publishers with the help of the South Korean government. Located in Gyoha-eup, it has used bookstores with titles in Korean and in foreign languages. Most booksellers have cafes where you can page through your new purchases while sipping a coffee. It also has exhibit spaces and art galleries. One of Paju's highlights is the Forest of Wisdom that is open all day. It's a library with donated books that anyone can look through.
Mundal
First operated in 1995, the book town in Vestland, Norway is open during May and mid-September every year. During this time, tourists can also explore fjords(峽灣)by boat, have a trip to the nearby delta (a great place for bird-watchers) and even try to swim in the cold glacial(冰川的) waters. Books are sold in so-called book cafes and in converted(改建的)boat houses, barns and even in a bus stop.
21. What can we know about the book town movement in Hay-on-Wye?

Fou Ts'ong, a Chinese-born pianist known for his sensitive interpretations of Chopin, Debussy and Mozart, died on Monday at a hospital in London, where he had lived for many years. He was 86.
A lover of classical music from a young age, Mr. Fou began taking piano lessons when he was 7. Mr. Fou made his first stage appearance in 1952. The concert caught the attention of officials in Beijing, who selected him to compete and tour in Eastern Europe. Mr. Fou soon moved to Poland, where he studied at the Warsaw Conservatory(音樂學(xué)校)on a scholarship. To prepare for the fifth Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1955, he practiced so diligently that he hurt his fingers and was nearly cut from the first round of the competition.
Mr. Fou was one of the first Chinese pianists to achieve global prominence when he took third place in the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1955. He also won a special prize for his performance of Chopin's mazurkas. Almost overnight, he became a national hero. To China, Mr. Fou's recognition in a well-known international competition was proof that the country could stand on its own artistically in the West. Chinese reporters flocked to interview Mr. Fou, while many others sought out his father, Fu Lei, for advice on child-rearing.
In 1981, a volume of letters written by his father, primarily to Mr. Fou, was published in China. Full of advice, encouragement, life teachings and strict paternal love, the book Fu Leis Family Letters became a best-seller in China. Besides influencing a generation of Chinese, Mr. Fu's words resonated(引起共鳴) long after his death with the person for whom they were intended.
"My father had a saying that 'First you must be a person, then an artist, and then a musician, and only then can you be a pianist,'" Mr. Fou once recalled(回想起)in an interview. "Even now, I believe in this order-that it should be this way and that I am this way."
24. What is paragraph 2 intended to tell readers?
A. Fou Ts'ong's contributions to music.
B. The competitions Fou Ts'ong attended.
C. Fou Ts'ong's education backgrounds of learning music.

25. Why does Fou Ts'ong's global recognition mean a lot to China?
A. It earns Chinese arts a place in the west.
B. It furthers the spread of Chinese culture.
C. It proves that Chinese people have a gift for music.
D. It ensures Chinese classical music to be acknowledged.
26. What does the underlined word "they" in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Mr. Fu's words. B. Young Chinese.
C. Fou Ts'ong and his family. D. Readers of Fu Lei's Family Letters.
27. What does Fu Lei's words suggest in the last paragraph?
A. No pains, no gains. B. Various qualities are essential for a pianist.
C. Interest is the best teacher. D. Talent is of greatest importance for a pianist.

Have you ever had the feeling that you can't think when there is too much noise around? Did you ever think a fish could experience that feeling too? A recent paper published in Science titled "Soundscape (聲景)of the Anthropocene Oceans", combined over 10, 000 scientific papers, confirming that undersea life knows that exact same feeling, more often than not. Anthropogenic(人為的)ocean noise, also known as underwater noise pollution, has created a dramatic impact on sea life due to "human-caused" activity within and neighboring our oceans.
Disney Pixar's animated film Finding Nemo educated us about the ocean, and specifically within the ordinary world of a clown fish. A fact many may not know is that clown fish spend the first part of their lives as larvae, drifting with the current of the ocean until they become strong enough to swim against it. Once they are powerful and strong, they head home in sheltered coral reefs(暗礁). There is only one drawback the fish can't physically see the reef, but they can hear it. The only problem is, if they can't hear it, will they ever make it home?
Our anthropogenic ocean noise, such as cargo ships, ship and boat propellers, surfing, deep sea mining, etc. are causing destruction of sea life. According to Time, sound is the sensory signal that travels the farthest through the ocean. Anthropogenic noise drowns out the natural soundscapes, putting marine (海洋的)life under immense stress. Altogether, this stress then affects their general health, disrupts their behavior, physiology(生理機能), reproduction and, in extreme cases, causes death. Marine life can adapt to noise pollution, however, only if they can escape it. This only causes further complications of straying (使偏離)species from their traditional breeding regions or separating them from their families.
Now, what if we told you there is already a solution? Multiple remedies, ideas and designs are currently in the works or already exist to eliminate and change the damage of anthropogenic ocean noise. As Time explains, from wind-powered ships to noise-reducing propellers(螺旋槳), floating wind turbines (發(fā)電機)and "bubble curtains" that quieten construction noise, the solutions are already available and in some cases, cost-effective. The authors of the paper hope it will catch the attention of policymakers, who historically speaking, have ignored the matter still to this day. Of all the challenges ocean creatures are battling, luckily sound pollution is the easiest compromise humans can make. Once the noise has decreased, marine life will be able to better manage everything else it is up against.
28. What is the paper "Soundscape of the Anthropocene Oceans" mainly about?
A. An analysis of sound travels in the ocean.
B. Discussions about different categories of ocean pollution.
C. Explorations of the effects of noise pollution on sea life.
D. Researches on sea animals' communication.
29. The clown fish in paragraph 2 is mentioned to .
A. show their life environment
B. present readers their terrible living conditions
C. introduce an animated film Finding Nemo
D. stress the importance of natural soundscapes to sea life
30. Which of the following words can replace the underlined word "disrupts" in paragraph 3?
A. disturbs B. dislikes C. disagrees D. disapproves
31. Which of the following solutions is already available to reduce underwater noise pollution according to paragraph 4?
A. The management of ship transport. B. The limitation of human activities.
C. The application of noise control techniques. C. The revision of relevant laws.

Crocodiles today look very similar to ones from the Jurassic period some 200 million years ago. There are also very few species alive today-just 25. Other animals such as lizards and birds have achieved a diversity of many thousands of species in the same amount of time or less.
In new research, published today in the journal Communications Biology, scientists explain how crocodiles follow a pattern of evolution known as "punctuated equilibrium(間斷平衡論)". The rate of their evolution is generally slow, but occasionally they evolve more quickly because the environment has changed. In particular, this new research suggests that their evolution speeds up when the climate is warmer, and that their body size increases.
"Our analysis used a machine learning algorithm(機器學(xué)習(xí)算法)to estimate rates of evolution," said lead author Dr. Max Stockdale from the University of Bristol's School of Geographical Sciences. "Evolutionary rate is the amount of change that has taken place over a given amount of time, which we can work out by comparing measurements from fossils and taking into account how old they are. For our study we measured body size, which is important because it interacts with how fast animals grow, how much food they need, how big their populations are and how likely they are to become extinct."
The findings show that the limited diversity of crocodiles and their apparent lack of evolution is a result of a slow evolutionary rate. It seems the crocodiles arrived at a body plan that was very efficient and versatile(多功能的)enough that they didn't need to change it in order to survive. This versatility could be one explanation why crocodiles survived the meteor impact at the end of the Cretaceous period, in which the dinosaurs perished.
Crocodiles generally thrive better in warm conditions because they cannot control their body temperature and require warmth from the environment. The climate during the age of dinosaurs was warmer than it is today, and that may explain why there were many more varieties of crocodile than we see now. Being able to draw energy from the sun means they do not need to eat as much as a warm-blooded animal like a bird or a mammal.
"It is fascinating to see how intricate a relationship exists between the earth and the living things we share it with," Dr. Stockdale added. "The crocodiles landed upon a lifestyle that was versatile enough to adapt to the enormous environmental changes that have taken place since the dinosaurs were around."
32. Which of the following statements is true according to the new research?
A. There are over 25 different species of crocodiles alive.
B. With the change of the environment, the evolution of crocodiles is faster.
C. Crocodiles' body sizes never change.
D. Effects of climate cause the increase of crocodiles' species.
33. Why does the author analyze the data acquired from fossil of crocodiles?
A. They can work out the speed of crocodiles' evolution.
B. They can know crocodiles' numbers in the past.
C. They can predict the transformation in crocodiles' appearance.
D. They can get a clear idea of crocodiles' habitat changes.
34. What's the function of crocodiles' body structure?
A. Controlling their body temperature. B. Preventing enemies' attacks.
C. Enabling them to evolve at a slower rate. D. Ensuring the diversity of their species.
35. What does the underlined word "thrive" in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. compete B. feed C. behave D. grow

Creating a system that works and following it every day is an excellent way of becoming your best self. Read on for tips on how to establish a daily routine.
36
The first step is to look into what you need to do every day. Do not worry about organizing the list at this point. Simply focus on writing down the list. If you cannot remember everything, carry your notebook every day for a week, and write down all the tasks.
Develop a schedule
Assess your energy levels. 37 Most people have high energy levels in the morning. As such, you should schedule the activities that require the most work at this time.
Remain flexible
Your routine and expectations might not fit in nearly as perfect as you expected, and that is okay. The point is to make use of your productive time for the challenging tasks and your less productive time for the less challenging activities. Many successful people sleep all day and work at night. 38 .
Test-drive your new routine
Once everything is all set up, it's time to practice the routine. Write it on a paper and test-drive it for 30 days. Take note of your feelings. 39 In the end, you should have a routine that works best for you.
Be realistic
Having a routine and sticking to it is unbelievable, but you should give yourself time. 40 If you are too hard on yourself, you might never have the chance of enjoying the benefits of a routine.
A. The development of productive habits takes time.
B. Make a list of your daily tasks.
C. And do not shy away from making changes.
D. Make a list, and remember that no task is too small.

My little angel, you are teaching me how selfless(無私的)real love is!
My wife called, "How long will you be with that newspaper? Will you come here and make your darling daughter eat her food?"
I tossed the paper away and rushed to the scene. My only daughter, Sindu, sat there, tears welling up in her eyes. In front of her was a big bowl of rice.
I cleared my throat and picked up the bowl. "Sindu, darling, why don't you take a few mouthfuls of this rice? Just for Dad's sake, dear."
Sindu wiped her tears with the back of her hands. "Ok, Dad. I will eat-not just a few mouthfuls, but the whole lot of this. But, you should" Sindu hesitated. "Dad, if I eat this entire rice, will you give me whatever I ask for?"
"Promise." I covered the pink soft hand of my daughter with mine. Now I became a bit anxious.
"Sindu, dear, you shouldn't insist on getting a computer or any such expensive items. Dad does not have that kind of money right now. Ok?"
"No, Dad. I do not want anything expensive." Slowly and painfully, she finished eating the whole quantity. After that, Sindu came to me with her eyes wide with expectation. "Dad, I want to have my head shaved off(剃掉), this Sunday!" was her demand.
"Sindu, darling, why don't you ask for something else? We will be sad seeing you with a clean-shaven head. Please, Sindu, why don't you try to understand our feelings?" I tried to plead with her.
"Dad, you saw how difficult it was for me to eat that rice." Sindu was in tears. "And you promised to grant me whatever I ask for. Now, you are going back on your words. Was it not you who told me the story of King Harishchandra, and its moral that we should honor our promises no matter what?"
It was time for me to call the shots. "Our promise must be kept. Ok, Sindu, your wish will come true."
With her head clean-shaven, Sindu had a round-face, and her eyes looked big and beautiful.
