Or have you stood in line waiting for a coffee and feel the need to just look over to the person next to you and ask about the weather? This is small talk, and despite the name, it’s actually a big part of daily life. “Small talk may seem trivial (微不足道的), but it’s a natural way for people to connect. It may seem like a waste of time. But it serves a vital role in our social interactions (交往). Big relationships are built on small talk,” Lindy Pegler, who has a master’s degree in psychology, wrote on Medium. In fact, we spend a lot of our time making small talk. Often, we find ourselves making small talk with the same people on a regular basis. Coming up with small conversations is the foundation (基礎(chǔ)) of these relationships. The benefits of such conversations can actually contribute to our happiness and benefit our lives as a whole. In a study cited by The New York Times, researchers found that having a healthy number of acquaintances (相識的人) and maintaining these relationships contribute to one’s sense of belonging to a community. So how does one start making small talk? It can be as simple as complimenting (稱贊) one’s shirt, asking about their day or commenting on the traffic. “First and foremost, small talk is an act of politeness,” Pegler noted. “Our small talk at our first meeting is our chance to show who we are,” she added. Who knows where this can lead? Nowadays, the small connections we make can lead to big results. You might find someone who has a common interest, or maybe even someone who turns out to be a close friend. There is one thing for sure: making small talk can brighten our day – even if it’s just a nice comment or a thoughtful question. So the next time you find yourself waiting for the bus or checking your watch while you wait in a line, take the opportunity to look up and talk to someone around you. After all, it takes a small connection to lead to a larger one. What does the writer intend to do by asking questions in paragraph one? To show his confusion on the theme B. To argue over the seriousness of talking C. To attach importance to talking D. To lead to the topic of the passage What does Lindy Pegler think of small talk? A. It is a pointless conversation. B. It wastes too much time. C. It is connected with your social status. D. It contributes to good relationships. 26. How do regular social interactions with acquaintances influence people according to researchers? A. They help people develop communication skills. B. They bring people happiness and a sense of belonging. C. They allow people to improve their manners. D. They help people find out who they are. 27. What are people advised to do when making small talk? A. Start with casual topics. B. Start with serious topics. C. Make it important and deep. D. Choose pleasant surroundings. C Drinking tea at least three times a week could reduce the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease (心血管疾病) and is linked with a longer and healthier life, at least in China, a new study suggests. Chinese researchers found the health benefits associated with tea were more obvious for drinkers of green, rather than black tea, and for those who had been drinking tea regularly over a longer period of time. The benefits were also clearer among men, the study indicated. Researchers looked at data from 100, 902 Chinese people with no history of heart attack or cancer and divided them into two groups: habitual drinkers who drank tea three or more times a week, those who never drank tea, and those who drank it less regularly. They followed up with them after a seven-year period. Their analysis found that regular tea drinkers had a 20% lower risk of having heart disease and stroke, and a 22% lower risk of dying from heart disease and stroke. Specifically, they found that regular tea drinkers could expect to live 1.26 years longer at age 50 than those who did not regularly enjoy a cup of tea. "We found that the protective effects of habitual tea consumption were very obvious and robust across different outcomes for men, but only mild for women, " said Dr Dongfeng Gu from China's National Center for Cardiovascular Disease. "One reason might be that the proportion of habitual tea consumers among men was approximately two and a half times as high as that among women, "Gu said. Some 48% of the men in the study were regular tea drinkers, compared with 20% of women. 28. What can be learned about the research from Paragraph 1? A. Drinking tea regularly benefits people's health. B. Drinking black tea brings more health benefits. C. Men always live longer than women by drinking tea. D. People can prevent all diseases by drinking tea. 29. What does the underlined word “robust” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. protective B. strong C. gentle D. beneficial 30. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. Fewer men like drinking tea. B. Men spend more money on tea. C. Men drink more tea than women. D. Fewer women may live longer than men. 31.Where is this text mainly from? A. an advertisement B. a poster C. a guidebook D. a magazine D. “The main surprise is how widespread the effects were,” says senior author Martin Genner, an evolutionary ecologist at the University of Bristol. “We found the same trend across all groups of marine life we looked at, from small forms of plants and animals to marine invertebrates (無脊椎動物), and from fish to seabirds.” The new study builds on early evidence of the impact of climate changes on the distribution, diversity and seasonality of marine species. Based on those findings, Genner’s team reasoned that marine species should be doing well at the leading (pole-ward) edge of their ranges but poorly at their trailing (equator-ward) side(向赤道的一側(cè)). They also realized that existing global species distribution databases could be used to test this idea. Based on a thorough search of available data in the literature, the researchers now report on a global analysis of diversity trends for 304 widely distributed marine species over the last century. The results show that — just as predicted — diversity increases have been most obvious where sampling has taken place at the pole-ward side of species ranges, while diversity declines have been greatest where sampling has taken place at the equator-ward side of species ranges. The findings show that large-scale changes in the diversity of species are well underway. They also suggest that marine species haven’t managed to adapt to warmer conditions. The researchers therefore suggest that projected sea temperature increases of up to 1.5°C over pre-industrial levels by 2050 will continue to lead to shifts in the diversity of marine species, including those of importance for coastal livelihoods. “This matters because it means that climate changes are not only leading to diversity changes, but naturally affecting the performance of species locally,” Genner says. “We’re seeing fewer and fewer species like emperor penguins as water becomes too warm at their equator-ward edge, and we see some fish such as European seabass growing well at their pole-ward edge where historically they were uncommon.” The results show that the effects of climate changes on marine species are highly uniform and not a little. “While some marine life may benefit as the ocean warms, the findings point toward a future in which we will also see continued loss of marine life,” Genner says. 32. According to the passage, what did Genner’s team conclude? A. Species data can be used to test the study. B. Marine species can adapt to the warm environment. C. Climate changes have a great effect on the growth of fish. D. Arctic marine species grow better than those at the equator. 33. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Some sea creatures may benefit from warming oceans. B. Marine life will benefit from ocean warming in the future. C. The effect of climate changes on marine life has improved. D. Climate Changes have little to do with the richness of species. 34. What does the underlined part of the last paragraph mean? A. similar and slight B. nothing and uneventful C. nowhere and a little bit D. everywhere and enormous 35. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? A. Study of the Disappearance of Marine life. B. Analysis of Species Distribution Database. C. Impact of Climate Changes on Marine Species. D. Comparative Analysis of Ocean Temperatures. 第二節(jié)(共 5 小題;每小題 2 分,滿分 10 分) 根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。 Easy Ways to Keep Your Brain Sharp Everyone is forgetful, but as we age, we start to feel like our brains are slowing down a bit and that can be a very annoying thing. 36 Read on for some techniques worth trying. 1. ___37___ People who regularly made plans and looked forward to upcoming events had a 50 percent reduced chance of Alzheimer’s disease (早老性癡呆癥),according to a recent study. ___38___Something as simple as setting a goal to have a weekly coffee date with a friend will do. Would you like to come with me? M: Sure! I’ve been to Italy, though. I’ve always wanted to go to Sweden. Would you consider going there, too? Text 2 M: Have you finished yet? You’re not having a dessert, are you? Look at the time. You know I have work tomorrow morning. W: Let me enjoy myself. It’s not very often that we eat out at a restaurant. Text 3 W: Tony, Peter, John, Lucy, me…is that everyone? We have to hurry. The show starts in five minutes. M: No, wait. Here’s Amy. Did you forget about her? W: I did, but don’t worry. I have her ticket. Text 4 M: Oops…I’m sorry, Mom, I broke another plate. I should probably let you finish. W: No, you go ahead. I got those dishes at a garage sale. Just be more careful! Text 5 W: How was the party last night? You must have had a lot to say to those people, since you haven’t seen them for 20 years. M: I sure did! Everybody had exciting new jobs and had done so much. I was excited to see them again. Text 6 W: Hello, I’d like to make an appointment to get an eye exam. M: Okay. What happened to your eyes? W: Well, I can’t see at night anymore, which is why I’m coming in. M: Okay. Have your eyes been hurting? Or has your sight been going dark? W: No, nothing like that. M: Oh, I see. Then I suggest you meeting the doctor next Friday at 3:00 p.m. Is there anything you’d like him to know before your visit? W: Next Friday works best for me. And nothing in particular, in fact. Thanks. Text 7 M: Hello, Susan. Where were you this morning? You look refreshed! W: I went for a walk around the lake. Great exercise for me, but it was so hot. I really need a glass of water. M: I haven’t been outside yet today, but it does look hot. How long were you out for? W: A few hours, at least. I walked around the entire lake, which is about four miles. M: Oh, I had no idea! I always thought that lake was smaller, like one or two miles around. W: No, it’s really big! Do you know where my aunt is? M: She’s still sleeping. I didn’t want to wake her. W: You’re a good husband to her. You should both walk around the lake with me next time. M: That sounds fun. Maybe we’ll go tomorrow if it’s not as hot. Text 8 W: I went to look at those new houses near the sports center this afternoon. M: Oh, OK. W: They are really nice. They have lots of space. Each house has three bedrooms and a separate bathroom. M: Hmm. W: And there is a garden in the back of each house. John, would you put down your book? Aren’t you interested in what I’m saying? M: Not especially. W: But why? I thought you wanted to move. M: You are the one who wants to move. I like this apartment. I can walk to work from here. W: You could still walk to work if we moved near the sports center. M: It’s further away, and it’ll be noisier. W: But it’s not exactly quiet living on this main road. M: Well, we chose this apartment together. And you didn’t mind the noise from the main road then. I seem to remember you liked the idea of being close to a bus station. W: I did, and still do. It’s simply that we need more space. John, at least come and take a look at the house with me. M: All right. Text 9 W: Where do you want to go to college, James? M: Well, I’m not sure. I can’t decide. I’m worried I will make the wrong choice. I want to be a teacher. I want to go to Columbia University in New York, but it’s so expensive. It’s also very far from where my family lives. I also would like to go to Northwestern University, but none of my friends from high school are going there. W: You’ll make new friends when you go to college. M: I’m worried about making new friends. Also, I’m worried that I won’t be smart enough to get good grades at a difficult college. I could go to the University of California, but I don’t think they have good teaching. Most importantly, I want to go to a school that is famous for teaching. W: Those are all excellent schools, James. If you’re accepted into all those schools, you should consider yourself very fortunate. When I went to school, I went to a very small college, and I still got a great job as a principal. You will be successful because you work very hard. M: Thanks for your help, Principal Skinner. Text 10 M: Good morning, everyone. When computers and intelligent machines first began to play an important role in our lives in the 1970s, many experts predicted that we were approaching a period when machines would do most of the work. It hasn’t worked out like that. It is true that fewer and fewer people are needed to produce goods. However, the workers affected have just had to find other less attractive jobs. Now, though, it looks like attitudes could finally be changing. It has been suggested in the UK that the working week could be reduced by five hours over the next decade. Of course, many people will be glad to hear this, but some concerns have been raised. A reduction in work might not be a good thing if it is replaced by more time spent on bad habits. Extra free time could be of great benefit if it is used for exercise and education.
