When Boris left school, he could not find a job. He tried hard and pestered (糾纏)his relatives, but they had problems of their own. He answered advertisements until he could not afford to buy any more stamps. Boris grew annoyed, then depressed, then a little hardened. Still he went on trying and still he failed. He began to think that he had no future at all.
“Why don't you start your own business?”?one of his uncles told him. “The world is a money-locker. You'd better find a way of opening it.”
“But what can I do?”
“Get out and have a look round,”?advised his uncle in a vague sort of way. “See what people want; then give it to them, and they will pay for it.”
Boris began to cycle around the town and found a suitable piece of a waste ground in the end. Then he set up his business as a cycle repairer. He worked hard, made friends with his customers and gradually managed to build up his goodwill and profit. A few months later, he found that he had more work than he could deal with by himself. He found a number of empty shops but they were all no good: in the wrong position, too expensive or with some other snag. But at long last, he managed to find an empty shop on a new estate where there were plenty of customers but no competition.
Boris and his assistant taught themselves how to repair scooters and motorcycles. Slowly but surely the profits increased and the business developed. At last Boris had managed to open the money-locker and found bank notes and gold coins inside.

Chinese people love food made of flour, whether it be dumplings, or flatbread. In the hands of sill artisans (手藝人), flour is made into lovely models of people or animals to be enjoyed and played with, which brings a unique kind of pleasure. This art form is called dough figurine (面塑). Among the various at styles of dough figurines, Beijing’s Dough Figurine Lang is a unique folk art, which is filled with the rich history and customs of the capital city. Their delicate and lovely handicrafts are storytellers of old and new Beijing. In 2008, it was included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.
It was created by Lang Shao’an. Most of the dough figurines are animals and characters from legends, historical stories, and local operas. The finished product is either put at the end of a thin stick, or on a table for display. Some are mostly for children to eat or play with, with simple forms and vivid decorations, while some are delicate pieces of artwork for display only. For this reason, during the making process they are often mixed with additives (添加劑) to prevent them from breaking up, being eaten by insects or growing moldy. Over the course of his long career, Lang Shao’an developed a set of sill fingers with an elegant artistic sense.
Lang Jiaziyu, born in 1995, is the third-generation inheritor of Dough Figurine Lang. When he was 15, he created Beijing Olympic Mascot shaped dough figurines which were highly praised. He looks a bit more fashionable than other folk artisans. In his skilled hands, pop culture icons such as figures based on Marvel comics characters and Chinese mythological figure Nezha with smoky makeup, are resonating with young people.
Like most of the other intangible cultural heritage handicrafts in China, Dough Figurine Lang does not get as much attention from the public. Few young people are willing to take the time to master a skill that does not make money, which has led to a decline in the number of those who are devoted to the handicraft. Good handicrafts need the devotion of artisans from one generation to another.
8. What is special about Dough Figurine Lang?
A. It reflects Beijing’s culture.
B. It is created by many famous artists.
C. It shows people’s lifestyles and beliefs.
D. It is popular with both tourists and the locals.
9. Why do artisans add additives to dough figurines?
A. To make dough figurines taste good.
B. To keep colors brighter and last longer.
C. To help shape dough into various forms.
D. To better preserve the finished products.
10. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. Suggestions for other folk artisans.
B. Different art styles of dough figurines.
C. Lang Jiaziyu’s achievements as an artisan.
D. The popularity of modern dough figurines.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To call on people to master a skill.
B. To appeal to people to value this folk art.
C. To teach people ways to appreciate the handicraft.
D. To persuade people to protect national cultural heritage.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. B

Recently, Facebook has changed its corporate name to Meta. The company said it would better include what it does, as it broadens its reach beyond social media into areas like virtual reality (VR). The CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the existing brand could not possibly represent everything that they’re doing today, let alone in the future. He also revealed the company’s plans to build a “metaverse (元宇宙)” — an online world where people can game, work and communicate in a virtual environment.
The term “metaverse” was invented by author Neal Stephenson in Snow Crash, a science fiction published in 1992. In the work, the metaverse is a sort of 3D virtual world. It’s not simply a virtual reality game but is a persistent and shared virtual world. Or rather, the metaverse is a whole universe of shared virtual spaces seemingly linked together — you could, essentially, teleport (瞬移) between them.
Metaverse combined at the very least five technologies — they are social media online game, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and cryptocurrency (加密貨幣). Those technologies will bring users to an interactive world. AR and VR are vital for Metaverse. VR serves to present the virtual world visually and then AR will provide the audio and sensors for people to be able to interact. With Metaverse, Facebook will offer not only a texting service but also a multi-perspective virtual touch that feels like a real thing.
Facebook said that it plans to create 10000 jobs in Europe over the next five years to work on metaverse-related endeavours (活動(dòng)). The company also has introduced Oculus-branded virtual-reality headsets, and it joined with Ray-Ban to develop smart sunglasses that went on sale for $299. “Over time, I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company and I want to anchor our work and our identity on what we’re building towards,” Mark Zuckerberg said. “I view this work as critical to our mission because delivering a sense of presence — like you’re right there with another person — that’s the highest goal of online social experiences,” he said.
12. Why has Facebook changed its corporate name?
A. To lead the gaming industry.
B. To cover its extended business.
C. To improve its corporate image.
D. To attract investment for its new plans.
13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The introduction to the VR game.
B. The future with 3D virtual world.
C. The origin of the word “metaverse”.
D. The importance of the novel Snow Crash.
14. What do we know about Metaverse?
A. It has a wide range of applications.
B. It offers people deeply interactive experiences.
C. It enables people to enjoy a free texting service.
D. It uses the five technologies to explore the universe.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. There will be fierce competition in the metaverse market.
B. Facebook will focus on designing virtual devices.
C. Metaverse will be the center of online experience studies.
D. Facebook will be devoted to developing the metaverse.

(3)解題的關(guān)鍵是能嫻熟地利用各種銜接手段。尤其要注意代詞,連詞等。如表示轉(zhuǎn)折關(guān)系的but,though,however等。

One day, my brother and I were alone in our apartment, which was on the first floor of the building. The reason was that my parents had both gone for a ball party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching TV. All of a sudden, the doorbell rang. Ding-Dong! Ding-Dong! My younger brother had rushed to the door before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the door and opened it.
Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different from other people and he said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he could talk with them.
Without any thinking, my brother said, "No." He asked if we would like to buy some comic books (連環(huán)畫), which he was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents' permission. However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention (意圖) to enter our house.
Then, I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother's hands with some rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but I tied it in a special way so my brother could untie himself as we often did. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen. Soon, he went upstairs to search the bedroom for something valuable. I managed to teach my brother to untie (解開(kāi)) the rope on his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but the line was dead.

【答案】One possible version:

Both my brother and I managed to get out of the house through the window and we called the police station and asked them for help. The police arrived at our house as soon as possible. And as a result, the man was caught.
Just at the same time our parents came back home. The police asked my family to go to the police station. It was there the police told us that the man was a wanted robber pretending to sell comic books and they had been looking for him for a long time. The police praised my brother and me for our bravery. After we went back home, I told my parents the whole story about the robbery. They were thankful that we were not hurt but they scolded me for not stopping my brother from opening the door to strangers. I learned a lesson on safety and responsibility.
